great interview lmao

It bothers me so ridiculously much – does it imply that black metal is not atmospheric per definition? Is ‘brutal death metal’ more brutal than death metal? What’s next, rhythmic techno?

This feminist-vegan-no borders community has appropriated black metal to their lifestyles and ideologies; the result is soft-touching snare hits in dull blast-beats accompanied by boring and safe vocal ‘shrieks’ along with uninteresting, cheesy, melodic post-rock riffs… everything extended to fourteen-minute tracks to create, quote-unquote, ‘atmosphere’. No rock and roll. This would in fact be an insult to what black metal is if it hadn’t been so pathetic. But, at the same time, it is not theirs in the first place and this vile appropriation simply doesn’t qualify as black metal. It lacks all underlying fundamental elements, sound is only one of several important parts: it’s also about attitude, and the weak mindset of the community I speak of doesn’t belong here.

on 'atmospheric black metal'

that alone makes me not want to check out the new record, but i know it will slay so i still will

it seems absurd to slam the "feminist-vegan-no borders community" (?) because it's not like bands that support those ethos have a singular distinct sound.

i fucking hate this boomer black metal mentality.

also there's pretty clear distinction between atmospheric black metal / "regular" black metal and death metal / brutal death metal.... like yes, brutal death metal is more brutal lmao and it's very easy to hear the difference. i don't think this dude listens to modern music.

I read it as there're those (softies?) that are 'fundamentally' disconnected to the 'elements' in black metal and added "appropriations" (soft intentions and executions) that doesn't carry that 'rock-n-roll' that "regular black metal" has. his gripes are more towards 'labels', even though yes black metal focused more on ambiences and death metal on being more fuckin HARD.

I assume lol

i wonder if emperor had to deal with this bullshit once they started adding keyboards to black metal

very damn likely, especially coming out of the cheesy 80s synth-era. you had less people knowledgeable of BM but fans vehemently guarded what it was from the first wave.

funny enough D.G. added more keys in the new record, he just admits he doesn't like it when others get cheesily overwrought with them
