There are genuinely cringe moments on this. The title itself is pretentious but when she sings:

I laughed in your face and said

"You're not Dylan Thomas, I'm not Patti Smith

This ain't the Chelsea Hotel, we're modern idiots"

I feel the urge to have a laugh and nope the fuck out.

In other places, like in I Can do it With a Broken Heart, she appeals a little to the losercore music — Rivers Cuomo of the Weezer could have written that shit, but she’s (arguably) hotter and female. But that makes her add the empowerment aspect, which makes it unintentionally more ironic on a meta level. That track actually sounds good, but like:

'Cause I'm a real tough kid

I can handle my shit

Is just too much for me, ffs. Same in the very last track:

"You look like Taylor Swift

In this light, we're lovin' it

You've got edge, she never did

The future's bright, dazzling"

And, quite honestly, her whole shtick that all encompassing mid-ness is now nauseating.

"Not to imply that low-stakes, max-capital Swift can't be sympathetic or engaging or forge a new angle – but the plethora of tired tropes on display oputs extra onus on the innovations The Tortured Poets Department does make."

oputs.

"Practically every one of the its greatest highlights is a glaring case-in-point for one or another of its recurrent flaws,"

the its

"...yet its energy and sympathetic angle well and truly shakes this off; the title-track goes further still it with some..."

further still it with

sweet review!

Yes, he should have committed more to writing an anonymous music essay for free on a site which has been dead for a decade, and triple check the spelling.
