Op 48 No 1, aka the C minor nocturne, is Chopin's best nocturne. Of course, it has the
the structurer and lyricism of a nocturne; however, it has the musical depth of his
ballades. It's a grand statement of melancholy, and the doppio movimento section is a
haunting climax. Stick with Rubinstein or other accomplished performers of Chopin
(Zimerman, Cho, Arrau). Op 48 No 2, the F# minor nocturne, is standard fare for a Chopin
nocturne. It is, of course, a lovely piece, but it's just sort of there.
