While it is certainly lesser in quality to the breakout sophomore record she penned in 2015, E.D.G.E. is a good, consistent showcase of Simz' lyrical abilities and storytelling attributes. The production has a grime influence that is lost on her later record, and thus it definitely takes inspiration from the U.K. grime/hip-hop scene that birthed it. Pianos and a slight amount of reverb allow for spacious beats that Simz spits excellently over, especially in "Enter The Void", a tough story about a boy growing up under less-than-ideal conditions. It's a remarkably consistent debut too, punctuated by two longer tracks with nice hooks and several very well done guest verses in the title-track and closer "Time Travels". With this, it was clear Simzy had potential, and she's done her best since to realize it. Dinosaurs WILL be back, bitch.
