Review Summary: Fulton County's "Reversal of Time" it’s a hard edged hip-hop experience that’s difficult to forget once you hear it.
Fulton County is a loose knit ensemble that consists of DJ Taz, Mr. Flamboyant and Kilo Ali. The three of them have worked on and off with each other over the years as well as on each other’s side projects. They are based in, and work out of, the Atlanta area and are an integral part of what is often referred to as the Hotlanta hip-hop scene. United they have donned what looks like standard orange colored prison issued jumpsuits, dubbed themselves as Fulton County, been locked down in an Atlanta recording studio for the past year, and have just released a breakout album that they’ve tagged as “Reversal of Time”.
DJ Taz’s past work includes “Rise Up” (2017), “Bet They Gone Get It” (2013), “Overcoming the World” (2000), “Girls” (1998) and “That’s Right” (1997). Over the years he’s been signed to EMI, Priority Records, and is currently under contract to the Universal Music Group. In addition to working with his Fulton County band mates he’s cut tracks as a performer and producer with the like of Raheem The Dream, Ms. Neeka, DJ Smurf (aka Mr. Collipark), June Dog and DJ Kizzy Rock. During his career his work has landed him on various Billboard charts and he is a featured house DJ at many of Atlanta’s hottest clubs. DJ Taz also has quite a reputation as a stage DJ who’s in high demand with many major old school rap artists.
Mr. Flamboyant is a well known host on Atlanta’s WIGO 1590 Radio. When he’s not on the airwaves he’s appeared on the big screen with Billy Crystal in “Artie“, Jennifer Garner and Common in “The Odd Life Of Timothy Green” and “The Change Up” starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman. On the small screen he’s worked alongside Tyler Perry in “Unnecessary Roughness”, “For Better or Worse” and “Meet the Browns”, had a part in Oprah Winfrey’s HBO special “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” and BET’s “Wayens Family Second Generation”. Along with DJ Taz, Kilo Ali (both together and individually) and with other denizens of the Hotlanta hip-hop universe, Mr. Flamboyant’s recently released several singles including “Flam Boy Ant” and “One Hell of a Day” with Lady Queet.
During the span of his recording history Kilo Ali has hit the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart several times. “Nasty Dancer” (1996) peaked at No. 17 and “Dunkey Kong” (1995) at No. 34 on those charts. On both of those releases his collaborating partner in crime was none other than his Fulton County cohort DJ Taz. Many in his hometown of Atlanta have nicknamed him as Mr. Whole Thing, and with good reason. He was one of the early pioneers of that heavy, low-end sound now known as the Miami Bass style, which was heard on hits like “Love in Ya Mouth”, “Baby, Baby” and “Show Me Love”. Unfortunately his artistic progress came to a temporary standstill due a stint in prison. Perhaps this is a clue in the choice of the Fulton County name and orange outfits used with the current combo.
“Reversal of Time” is a just released fourteen song compilation that’s full of songs and skits, and features an earlier debuted Fulton County number titled “Inside Out”. It’s a hard edged hip-hop experience that’s difficult to forget once you hear it. Also included is a version of Mr. Flamboyant’s aforementioned “Flam Boy Ant”, as well as an outro, lounge chill remix of the “Inside Out” track. This unexpected down tempo reworking of their single is a good way to end the rollicking romp that Fulton County takes us on through their “Reversal of Time” journey.
