Though Herbie's debut, Takin' Off, was a really good slab of bluesy post-bop/hard bop, his second record, My Point Of View, is somewhat of a lesser version of it. Both albums start out with funkier pieces of post-bop in "Watermelon Man" and "Blind Man, Blind Man", the latter of which is still excellent despite not being as good as the former, featuring some truly fantastic guitar playing from the underrated Grant Green. The rest of album is pretty much post-bop by the numbers, except of course for "King Cobra", which as the very least attempts to, as Hancock himself put it, "expand the flow of jazz tunes and chords so that it would go in directions beyond the usual". Of course, Takin' Off was similar, but in undoubtedly better quality. That said, My Point Of View is still a good, if unspectacular, post-bop album from everyone's favorite jazz pianist.
