Wow...this is dark, avant garde stuff. It sounds a bit like a minimalist Scott Walker, but this was released in 1986, before Mr. Walker really got weird. This is a mix of Diamanda's gorgeous operatic vocals, sepulchral screaming, piano laments, droning noise, otherworldly shimmers and nothing remotely resembling a pop moment. Yet, this is a terrific, harrowing listen, and an artist I am excited to explore more of!

Immaculate queer avant garde dark ambient hell. Music written to critique the Catholic Church?s stance on HIV/AIDS
along with queer people at the time. The album is fairly reminiscent of an exorcism or conversion therapy. I can play it
and not have my boyfriend turn it off until Free Among the Dead.

As much as I respect her for making this (it's part of a trilogy about raising the awareness of the AIDS
epidemic,) I can't say I enjoyed more than a few minutes. Each track was interesting at first, but
eventually just felt never ending. Not my thing, but very respectable.

Less abrasive than The Litanies of Satan, but it's still by no means an easy listen. This is a record regarding how the Catholic Church treats AIDS victims (AIDS being a prevalent theme throughout Diamanda's work, as her brother died from the disease). Musically, it sounds like someone going through an exorcism. It's very dark and very unsettling. The arrangements range from minimal to incredibly layered, and there are some fantastic a capella moments too. Not for the faint of heart.

Less abrasive than The Litanies of Satan, but still by no means an easy listen. This is apparently a record regarding how the Catholic Church treats AIDS victims (AIDS being a prevalent theme throughout Diamanda's work, as her brother died from the disease). Musically, it sounds like someone going through an exorcism. It's very dark, very unsettling, and frightening in spots. The arrangements range from minimal to incredibly layered, often with many voices-- but there are some fantastic a capella moments too. Not for the faint of heart. 3.9
