Kittie is an all-female Canadian metal band formed in London, Ontario in 1996. Formed when the members were only in between the ages of 12 and 14, they would later release their first album in January of 2000, “Spit”, which ended up being a huge smash hit in the US, soon being certified gold, and Kittie would go on to tour with bands like Slipknot and Suicidal Tendencies, and also appeared at Ozzfest 2000. By the summer of 2000, Kittie would prove to be one of the fastest rising bands in the nu metal subgenre, although critics were divided on the band with some calling them nothing more than a mere gimmick of being young girls. In October of 2001, Kittie released their second full length album “Oracle”, which was a lot more aggressive and dark in sound than “Spit”, seemingly done in part to the criticism of their previous album. Although critical reception to the album was slightly better, the album was a flop in comparison to “Spit”, with “Oracle” selling not even half of what “Spit” sold. Kittie would go on to release three more albums throughout the 2000s, with the band practically becoming a cult band by the end of the decade with their albums falling out of the Billboard Top 100 charts entirely by the time they released their follow-up to “Oracle”, “Until the End”, in 2004.In August of 2011, Kittie released their sixth album “I’ve Failed You”, which became their lowest-selling album to date, only reaching number 178 on the Billboard Top 100. It also received poor reviews from critics and fans alike due to a lack of musical growth, and Kittie then ended up going on a hiatus in 2013, and have presumably since disbanded. The members of the group remain active in the metal underground today, with the driving forces of the band (and the only two members from the original lineup left), Morgan and Mercedes Lander, currently being active respectively in Karkaos and The White Swan. In October of 2017, the original lineup of Kittie reunited for one-night only to celebrate their 20th anniversary, although further activities seem very unlikely. « hide |
