It's been a while since Death Before Disco was really in the centre of attention. One might wonder what they have been doing. My guess is that they listened to whole range of different records, and wondered how to use that in their new songs. Whatever they exactly did, it really worked out for them. It's been a while since Death Before Disco was really in the centre of attention. One might wonder what they have been doing. My guess is that they listened to whole range of different records, and wondered how to use that in their new songs. Whatever they exactly did, it really worked out for them. On their previous full length and splits, Death Before Disco already was fairly experimental and eclectic. However, they were more or less all over the place, it wasn't completely focused. But now, with Barricades, they seemed to have found their style. They clearly focussed on the stronger point of their previous releases, which were the slower, more atmospherical parts in their music. They have really expanded in this spectrum, and have cut down the more chaotic parts. This by no means means that they have become a soft band, there are still quite some hardcore and metal related influences on this record, as well as some jazz. It's all just more dosed, and therefore more powerful. All songs are different, and yet similar. This record however, is not just a collection of ten songs, but a whole package. This means that the songs really work together as a single entity. It(s not really suited to listen to one song, at best you should sit down to absorb the entire record. The artwork of this record is also fitting to the music, and really beautifully done by Jason Alexander Cruz. If Death Before Disco is able to display this quality on stage, too, no one should be surprised if they rise up to the level of bands like Cave In, or even A Perfect Circle, soon. Barricades shows that they have the quality to perform in that big league of alternative rock bands with a harder, experimental edge. « hide |
