"Introduction
Lamprey is the bipolar brainchild of mwah: Cody Jones, musician and producer from the sunny Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The
impetus dates back to jamming with my older brother as he struggled to teach me the basics of guitar-playing on an old, rusty acoustic. Fast
forward post my high school graduation, I had begun writing my own music spanning any number of genres and influences. When I started
the rock thing, I had enough recording experience to get all of the instruments into the computer and get them sounding at least in the
ballpark of a band playing in their garage. But with no vocalist, I had to teach myself how to sing, scream and write lyrics over the next two
years - the alternative was to go back and work at McDonald’s (which is still probably a better choice, financially). Skip ahead one expensive
Bachelor’s Degree later (not worth it), I still have no idea how to categorize myself. As far as I know, I am one of the few people on the
planet that do absolutely everything, from writing the songs, playing and recording every instrument, mixing and mastering and all of the
artwork, branding and networking. But hey, anything beats flipping burgers and filing papers for the man, right?
Sound
Lamprey is primarily a rock project, influences range from the bands of my childhood, Tool, Deftones and Linkin Park to more modern bands
like Fair to Midland, Bring Me The Horizon and Breaking Benjamin. As I listen to more music, it directly impacts my writing and production
styles: most recent have been older Classical and Jazz, Shoegaze, Film Scores and Ambient. I am continually refining my sound and will only
write music that I want to listen to, like some sort of absorbent musical sponge. Instrumentation ranges from walls of overdriven detuned
guitars and crashing, thunderous drums to ambient, clean acoustics and electronically driven cinematic music. Lamprey is universal and
impartial to tunnel-vision.
Covers
The covers I take on are specifically chosen to improve my production abilities - by deconstructing a song, piece by piece, I am able to
analyze and understand exactly how that band achieves its “sound”. I then use certain pieces of each deconstructed song, synth patches,
drum fills, guitar tones and vocal harmonies for example, to manipulate and re-use in my own music. The point of the covers is not to throw
some unique “twist” or my own style over the original - instead, I intentionally try to replicate the song to the nth degree. By understanding
exactly what makes a song tick, I am able to improve my own production and musical abilities much faster and more efficiently than any
structured lesson or course can provide.
Lyrical Content
The lyrics I write are a direct reflection of my life at the moment I write them. I try to analyze exactly what is happening to me or people
around me, and cater the lyrics accordingly. Common themes include self-reflection, love, dissonance, and ignorance. My lyrics (and music)
are equal parts left and right brain - calculated, mechanical and logical versus emotive, intuitive and cryptic. I draw on a lot of idioms and
common sayings to get my point across, while trying to maintain a sense of ambiguity and versatility in the application of topics to the
listener’s life or situation.
Outside Music:
When I’m not working in the studio (ahem, laptop in my bedroom), I am learning. I believe who we become is a direct result of who we are
influenced and mentored by, so I seek to find the absolute best teachers and information available to me on any number of topics. Recently
I’ve been reading up on cellular neurology, the microbiome, the Norwegian language, business management, new instruments (piano and
drums), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Arakan and social skills and manipulation. There is a plethora of useful information out there, so I urge
everyone reading this to go learn something new every day. I’m also writing a compendium of the most useful biohacking and self-
improvement techniques and tools that have helped me overcome stress, anxiety and just general average-ness." - Cody Jones « hide |
