Superchunk since 1989 for which he founded the independent label Merge Records with bandmate Laura Ballance, now known as one of
the most successful businesses of its kind. Beyond his work with Superchunk, the musically prolific McCaughan has been a part of numerous
smaller bands throughout his years, most notably Portastatic, which is centered upon Mac who initiated the project as a solo venture in
1992. The 2015 single "Box Batteries" b/w "Whatever Light" and the full-length Non-Believers that soon followed are the first records to
bear McCaughan's name alone in the banner, marking a project separate from all his others with Non-Believers being described as
representative of Mac's "attraction to that early-'80s era of music when punk evolved into something more introspective, focusing on themes of
isolation and eventually turning into post-punk and new wave. As he puts it, he was thinking about a time when bands were 'using keyboards
and drum machines to relate through their music a disaffection or alienation' from society, school, whatever." « hide |
