Originally from Gainesville, Florida, Tom Petty is a classic American rock musician. His debut album, the self-titled Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, appeared in 1976 and became popular with songs such as Anything That's Rock N' Roll, Breakdown, and the classic American Girl. Influenced by Elvis Presley, The Byrds, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, to mention a few, Petty and his backing band, The Heartbreakers, created a signature sound for themselves with short, catchy songs and a "new wave" sound. Since his debut in the mid 70s, Petty has continued writing distinctly American classics.
