In my opinion, the best of 2007. | 1 | | Arcade Fire Neon Bible
If 'Funeral' was a masterpiece of youth, hope and family, 'Neon Bible' is The Arcade Fire's declaration of maturity and loss -- thankfully the spark is still there. The Fire bombast through out 'Neon Bible' with images of lost humanity, and a desolate future, outcries for action and reformation before we're overtaken by our own weight...some crazy shit. Though comparatively, the Fire were more joyous and bouncy on their last release, the deep dark caverns of 'Neon Bible's more reserved yet grand style shine through the wash and distortion that covers it's sound. There's something to be said though, with the loss of their youthfulness (only on record thankfully), something always feels a bit empty about it all. Not enough to detract from all the highlights of an absolutely fantastic album. | 2 | | The Besnard Lakes The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse
'Devastation' and 'Because Tonight' are probably the two best songs I heard this year, surround that with 6 more amazing tracks that will rock you to the core. Thing is, they sure take their fucking time to do it -- but when it hits, it's good. I compare this to the first few times I listened to 'Kid A'; didn't quite get it, it's reserved, it takes it's time, but it builds to great peaks. After many repeated listens, and the loudest show I've ever seen, 'The Dark Horse' is safe to say, a restrained, but glorious LP. | 3 | | Radiohead In Rainbows
It's Radiohead, it's some of the best music they've made, and it's easily the most focused record they've ever done. CD2 is pretty sweet too. | 4 | | The Go! Team Proof Of Youth
I don't know why, but I love this noise rap. Though it doesn't quite hit all the pop peaks of 'Thunder, Lightning, Strike', it's a damn good listen. They sound a bit more tangible this time around, more like a the real band they are, and it's great. | 5 | | Animal Collective Strawberry Jam
Something about it fits just right, not quite sure what, but it works. Oh wait, they've made some 'real' songs, some structure, and holy crap -- it's awesome! | 6 | | White Rabbits Fort Nightly
The 1920's never sounded so good, or brooding, or fucking weird for that matter. The Rabbit's own personal blend of indie/ska is some fun, wild and deep music. With superb writing and vocals capped by one of the best rhythm sections around today they pack so much into 'Fort Nightly's running time, it really feels like a journey. | 7 | | Justice ?
The best dance album I've heard since the Avalanches dropped 'Since I Left You'. | 8 | | Yeah Yeah Yeahs Is Is [EP]
Some of the best music I've heard from one of my favorite bands. | 9 | | Kevin Drew Spirit If...
Kevin Drew basically made another BSS album, I know, but I do love me some BSS. It's more lo-fi this time around, the vocals are turned up, and he really just pulls out all the stops. | 10 | | Panda Bear Person Pitch
Noah Lennox has my favorite voice in modern music, surround that with washy Wilson brother sound and I couldn't ask for much more. As most Collective releases, it can get to be a bit nuts, but, it doesn't detract from the sheer quality here. | 11 | | Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Some Loud Thunder | 12 | | Blonde Redhead 23 | 13 | | M.I.A. 12.29.07 | I normally don't get caught up in hype, but Neon Bible is pretty damn good.
And In Rainbows is just...well, In Rainbows. (Meaning it's excellent and everything's already been said that can be said.) | Electric City
12.29.07 | In Rainbows IS, in fact, In Rainbows (meaning its ok), but Neon Bible's pretty cool. | Phil
12.30.07 | Thats the first list I've seen with Kevin Drew on it. Thats awesome. |
