Great Ambient Albums 2013
1Dirty Beaches
Drifters/Love Is the Devil

The second half of Dirty Beaches' brilliant double album ("Love Is the Devil") contains
almost all the ambient music - it's mesmerizing and much stronger than the first half.
Dirty Beaches also released the Water Park OST this year, which is very different but
also a strong work.
2 Slow Walkers
Slow Walkers

The ghostly, fascinating result of a collaboration between Grouper's Liz Harris and
Australian composer Lawrence Harris.
3The Haxan Cloak
Excavation

Moody, dark music, all elaborately structured and composed.
4Grouper
The Man Who Died In His Boat

Probably Grouper's most accessible album and a good introduction to her style. It's
interesting how uncomfortable the music sounds the one time cuts the drones and just
plays an acoustic piece ("Living Room").
5Jon Hopkins
Immunity

Only occasionally ambient, but maybe my #1 album overall so far. The title track is
absolutely gorgeous.
6Atrium Carceri
Void

Technically from last year and not Carceri's best, but still gloomy and very unsettling.
"Passage" and "Reap" are highlights.
