| Beer And Music : The Second Hopping
Shout out to Inveigh for the most congenial list in Sputnik history, as I suggest 10 pairings between good music, and good beer. | 1 | | Indian From All Purity
Karbach "Rodeo Clown" (Double IPA) - An aggressively hoppy IPA, with grapefruit and a little pine upfront, a lingering bitterness throughout, and some complex maltiness to transition into a finish tinged with black pepper. The album and the beer grab you by the balls immediately, and don't let go till they're finished. | 2 | | Feist Let It Die
Lakewood "The Temptress" (Imperial Milk Stout) - A desert beer if ever there was. Very sweet, with very apparent cocoa and vanilla, with roasted malts, and a hint of coffee, even a little dark fruit... and a big alcohol kick at 9% ABV. Although both Let It Die and the Temptress are obviously sweet and accessible, they offer satisfying complexity. | 3 | | Prince Purple Rain
Franziskaner Weissbier (Hefeweizen) - The hefeweizen is fairly straightforward, with the usual banana and some subdued cloves, and an exceptional drinkability. An extremely refreshing beer. Both of these are always easy to ingest, with great reward. | 4 | | The Sword Age of Winters
Real Ale "Iron Swan" (English Pale Ale) - This one's pretty obvious, but the beer is perfect for The Sword's forays into fantasy. The beer has a mild hop bitterness, with heavy citrus and medium pine, and a dry finish to keep you coming back for more. The fact that it's an English style is a fitting homage to the Tolkienian world that Age of Winters dwells in. | 5 | | American Sharks American Sharks
Southern Star "Bombshell" (Blonde Ale) - No bullshit with either of these. This band's debut is just hard rock with punk overtones perfectly suited to head banging. This blonde ale is very light, with simply sweet malts, but a nice heft in the powerfully bready finish. Both should be used in excess when possible. | 6 | | Neurosis The Eye of Every Storm
Ayinger "Celebrator" (Doppelbock) - The Celebrator is excellent. A beautiful roasted malt undertone throughout, with chocolate, dark fruit, a caramel sweetness, and a smooth finish. Just like TEOES, this doppelbock masks its complexity with a very inviting presentation. | 7 | | Steely Dan Countdown To Ecstasy
Live Oak Hefeweizen (Hefeweizen) - The Live Oak Hefe is bounds more complex than it's name implies. The banana and cloves are there, the overall sweetness is there, but there's an unexpected citrus, a light spice, and a nice breadiness. Just like most all of Steely Dan's output, it's easily consumed in mass quantities, but there's a lot more than the guise of a pop-rock band (or traditional German beer). | 8 | | Rush Signals
Southern Star "Pine Belt Pale" (American Pale Ale) - A very refreshing pale ale, with a heavy amount of pine, some nice citrus peel, a beginning of hop intensity, but a great counterpoint of sweet roasted malts, and what appears to be the ubiquitous Southern Star doughy bread to support the beer. This beer is great for Signals because it came at a time when Rush were becoming less heady, and more accessible to the average listener, but maintained an ample supply of complexity to hold the interest of a more discerning palate. | 9 | | Pelican Australasia
Grand Teton "Bitch Creek ESB" (Extra Special Brown Ale) - At first a fairly straightforward brown, but along with that comes a pronounced citrus, and a hoppiness that gives a drying effect to finish, making this highly drinkable. While Pelican do maintain that strong sludge background, they're not afraid to venture into more adventurous realms. | 10 | | Frank Zappa The Grand Wazoo
Real Ale Coffee Porter (American Porter) - This porter is an excellent fusion of two great things, beer and coffee, as The Grand Wazoo fused jazz and rock in inspired fashion. The coffee is bolstered with a subtle roasted malt note, a light mouth feel, and hints of cocoa. | |

04.16.14 | "(although the German ones here are definitely mass produced, I haven't come across anything less than good with widely distributed German beer"
Probably because the really awful stuff doesn't even cross country borders. Our Oettinger, Germania and whatnot is the equivalent to your Bud Light and what have yous. Can't say I'm a fan of neither Hefeweizen nor generic Pilsners though, both make me nauseaous.
Also, even "craft beer" and stuff like trappist beer is technically mostly "mass produced" nowadays. Speaking of which, Chimay Blue and Rochefort 11 are ridiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiculous - extremely tasty, super easy to drink but packing quite a punch. (I think both have around 11%) Goes similarly for Anchor's Barleywine.
If we're talking British stuff I'll have to say that Fullers didn't disappoint (at least the dark ales and the stout), the Scottish BrewDog guys also have some really good stuff like the Punk/5AM IPA, Libertine Ale and if you REALLY like it bitter - their Hardcore IPA.
