Top 20 Thrash Metal Albums Of 2013

A recap of the essential thrash releases of 2013.

Dawn of the End

Not reinventing the wheel by any means, but this is a simple old school thrasher - no frills and straight to the point.

The Porridgeface

This is the third offering from Anders Lindberg's one-man speed metal band, The Porridgeface. While criminally underrated, this
album admittedly crushes other high profile efforts from the likes of Evile and Havok in terms of memorability. Sure, the vocals
and overall production could use some help, but this was an absolute blast to listen to. The songs, with their punk influences,
are extremely catchy and the lyrics are quite humorous. (Choice cuts: Down in the Bog, The Haunting Suspicion, AAA, Zombie
Jesus)

Unnatural Selection

One of the year's biggest disappointments for me, but not quite of "Super Collider" proportions. It's not completely horrific, but
pales in comparison to it's predecessor and modern thrash masterpiece "Time is Up." It lacks the certain in-your-face attitude of
tracks like "Prepare for Attack" and the vocals are ridiculously cartoony, almost like a highly exaggerated Dave Mustaine
impression. Don't get me wrong, there are a few good moments here and there, like the first 3 tracks and that nice little solo on
"Under the Gun," but we all expected much more from a band known for their quality.

Pulse

Post-"Relativity" Diamond Plate is viewed by most everyone as a travesty. On their first full-length, they took the speed and
ferocity that made their EP so successful and shit all over it. But for their sophomore release, they replaced their constipated
metalcore barker for someone who would actually do their music justice. While this release may still be offputting for your typical
thrasher, this is a serious improvement from the bland uninspired modern mess that was their debut. Be sure to check out
"Walking Backwards," it's one of my favorite songs of the year.
