12.18.16 | This list has been pretty good but I feel it has no greater point
Boney, the pie charts have been a function since I first joined 4 years ago but I've never paid great attention to the site till I stopped lurking about a year and 1/2 ago |
Satellite
12.18.16 | @boney no, but the pie chart system was re-tooled a couple years ago to make it suck less |
Cygnatti
12.18.16 | remember when we actually thought we could suggest a tag for the site to be added; and that it would actually get added at some point?
good times. :] |

12.18.16 | "This list has been pretty good but I feel it has no greater point"
pretty sure it's not supposed to help you reach enlightenment or make you wealthy. it's a fucking list about pie charts. |
Cygnatti
12.18.16 | "Wait, have the pie charts only been around since a few years ago? I had always assumed they have always been a feature."
pie charts AND the genre tagging system have always been a part of relevant sput (as far as i recall), but 2-3 years ago it was changed quite significantly. i mention a lot of the changes on here. but the most important changes were the addition of MANY more genre tags; the following tags did not exist before the change:
- all electronic genrse other than simply "electronic", not even house and techno
- experimental ("other", a tag that no longer exists, was used instead)
- soundtracks
- melodic anything
- americana, bluegrass (only country was available)
- jazz fusion
- new age
- lo-fi
- progressive rock and metal ("progressive" was used beforehand, but people wanted it to be separated)
- quite a bit more as well... |

12.18.16 | Why does Godspeed keep showing up under the all time metal charts, with metal sitting comfortably as none of the tagged genres? |
Satellite
12.18.16 | i think it's because the "drone" tag is considered a subgenre of metal. happens with other artists, too; david bowie and the talking heads register as punk. don't worry, it'll be fixed never. |
DoofusWainwright
12.18.16 | This system is more scientific than I realised yikes. Pleased my army of 1's count for shit on my pie |

i've actually never noticed this... drone being listed under metal is like a crime against humanity... |
Divaman
12.18.16 | It's why I keep having Blues show up on my pie chart -- I almost never listen to what i would considered the blues, but all of the older bands from the '70s who were blues based show up with blues as a sub-category. |
Cygnatti
12.18.16 | yeah lotta bigger 70s bands had a strong blues influence or were even primarily blues rock for a time. many changed to being more straightforward 70s rock. i'd argue there's a significant difference between just "blues" and "blues rock", but that's just me. |
ArsMoriendi
12.18.16 | Very interesting list
I was wondering how it worked
Cyg rules |
Divaman
12.18.16 | I agree with you, Cyg.
Also, it drives me crazy that there's no "New Wave" category, and also that there's no category for either "Celtic" or "World Music". |

ArsMoriendi
12.18.16 | That's actually awesome
baroque pop, disco, new wave, screamo, some hip hop subgenres so that 90% of hip hop artists don't have only 1 tag, synthpop, lounge
All ones we need that we don't have... |
Cygnatti
12.18.16 | i took my frist programming class and i thought that a lot of the stuff i learned (which is pretty basic) applied to the stuff i learned about the tag system at sput. |

We should try to actually get updated genre tags. Like a master-list where people can vote on whether new subgenre inclusions would be helpful.
Well it's a fantasy at least. |
Satellite
12.18.16 | it'd be nice if mx could find someone else to handle the day-to-day operations of the site and make the necessary changes. not sure how plausible that is but a man can dream.
that said, i'm grateful that he keeps the site running at all. |

That's not true at all |
theBoneyKing
12.18.16 | "Alternative Metal should really be a genre tbh"
I mean in theory every legitimate subgenre would be a genre like on rym, but for the purposes of the sort of system we have now here who don't alternative rock and metal suffice?
Though we have some very specific metal genres here too so maybe that one's not too much of a stretch |

11.29.20 | I'm pretty sure a variance of 1 is not needed for 100% objectivity. |
Cygnatti
11.30.20 | That's probably true. If not, it works better when it is closer to 1.00. All I know is that when I had 100% objectivity on this account, I did indeed have a 3.0 avg and 1.0 variance, and when I used alts, it seemed to replicate that. But of course, there's prob more to it that I'm just not getting.
For reference: Doofus' account has 3.0 avg and 1.002 variance and as far as I know, this is the only one that currently has 100% objectivity.

Trifolium
11.30.20 | From my Rating Curves list, some other users have 100% objectivity at this moment:

Elynna
Funeralpolis (99%)
A 3.00 average and 1.00 variance are roughly true for all of these cases. |

05.08.21 | holy shit, I just remembered something, in the old pie chart, every genre had its own color and I really liked that. It made sense as there weren't too many genres back then. These days, the chart auto-assigns colors by popularity.
iirc pop punk was orange, death metal was black, black metal was a different shade of black, punk rock or hardcore was red, alt rock was... green?? "alt/indie" was like light blue I think. |

I wonder whether these same rules apply to the new half-pie charts by the way. They might have changed some underlying calculations when ditching the actual pie charts. |
