03.01.17 | i don't think a whole lot of great music came out during the early 1950s, unless you're really into blues, swing, big band and similar shit
harry partch has released some weird microtonal proto-Zappa-esque music during that time, and of course Moondog released his incredible debut in 1953 (very different from the record you got rec'd btw), but other than that i don't think anything too "strange" came out then |

03.01.17 | I've got an album from 1945 that I started jamming because of Breaking Bad. I actually jam some comps of 50's songs on Spotify now and again, but I can't think of any artist that I really wanted to look further into from them. |

03.02.17 | Glad you've liked my rec, if you want to dig the artist I'd recommand Moondog 2 and Moondog and his Friends, respectively from 1971 and 1953. His whole discography hides interesting stuff, however his other albums are quite heterogenous in terms of quality. |

"not sure how people would label this...afro freak folk campfire music maybe"
Didn't even know freak folk was a genre so thanks.
I like this YT label: 2nd wave proto-negrocore. |
MrSirLordGentleman
03.04.17 | Oh come on Doofus now got it against the Bee Gees? damn, ur taste dude...
Odessa is totally different from disco stuff like Stayin Alive. Can't guarantee you'll like it, but it is probably one of the darkest albums in psychedelic pop. Their 60's era is totally different from their typical image though I admit the falsettos (which at least in my case, I love, are still there) |
MrSirLordGentleman
03.04.17 | and a 2.0 to Demons and Wizards

03.09.17 | @Doof All good, he certainly has that bravado to em' ha-ha you ain't wrong.
"This band still don't blow me away and the idea anyone could hold them up against the best of Bowie in the era is laughable to me, but hey, a juicy enough" I don't know Doof kind of silly putting it that way; I didn't even know that was a common place comparison, I know Davey was influenced by em' but that's where I'll leave that.. All I know is The Slider/Electric Warrior kicked my ass when I was younger.. Bolan made me want to pick up a guitar first.
Also Titan's rec for 'who's next' 2/5? Breakin' my heart bro! |
Dewinged
03.09.17 | Fair enough Paco de Lucia feedback Doof, the man´s technique is out of this world indeed but that is. Flamenco is a hard hole to dig, lot of cool stuff to find but hard to get into. I was gonna rec you a band called Triana, that mixes Rock and Flamenco but it was one year over. |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | Jeff - I'd heard them compared to Bowie here, that was where I was coming from with that. Plus, there are similarities. That really wasn't my complaint anyway, I just only like less than half the dude's songs is what it primarily boils down to. |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | Dewi - I can still check that one some time, shoutbox it me. |
Jeffrulesyou
03.09.17 | Gotcha Doof, all good; no complains here, just wasn't exactly sure what ya meant, thanks for clarifying. I'm still unfamiliar with sputnik! lol |

03.09.17 | how do yuou not like SImon and Garfunkel |
rabidfish
03.09.17 | ok Doof, after reading your thoughts on Vashti Bunyan I guess Anne Briggs ain't gonna blow your mind away. Still, u should check it. it's just trad english folk, but damn if it's not a pleasant listen. |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | I mean even Townsend prefers scrolling through pics of a seven year old's pecker more than Who's Next and he's in the band |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | Not liking S&G is easy, in fact I found it twice as easy as not liking the Beach Boys |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | rabid - a 3.5 isn't a bad rating for me, I liked the VB but it was a very straightforward, steady pleasure and by the end I was craving to listen to something else. But for sure trad folk can be pleasurable. |
wham49
03.09.17 | the beach boys are easy not to like, it is pretty hard to pin down your preferences, |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | Wham- It's music, it isn't logical, the smallest thing can piss me off and ruin a whole band's discog for me. Imagine you love the Lord of the Rings and you get the audiobook...and it's Nic Cage doing the reading and you can't stand the way the dude says 'Frodo'. You could say logically you should be able to see beyond that, to be able to get over it, but no, that small thing could be enough to piss you right off and hate the experience. A lot of music I don't like is because of something people would say is trifling...but it makes all the difference to me. BOTW has this sappy thing and honestly I don't like the singing at all - that's enough for me, more than enough. |
wham49
03.09.17 | I get it, I like it actually, music tastes are fickle, and should be, mine are too, some things are triggers for one thing or another |
AmericanFlagAsh
03.09.17 | I honestly figured you'd 3.5 Vashti. It grows on you after repeated listens tbh |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | Flag - I wanted to like the Vashti a bit more, I like the AnCo collab...I'll revisit it but it really felt like too much of the one good thing on first listen |
talktothehead
03.09.17 | oops nvm lol |
RunOfTheMill
03.09.17 | Well at least you're being honest Doof, man.
And surprisingly un-cynical after going through this many recs |
wham49
03.09.17 | since you liked the captain beyond, you should check Wishbone Ash/ Argus |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | RotM - I'm enjoying it, no point approaching this exercise from a cynical standpoint. I was never going to like everything but I'm guessing the average of the ratings I've put up so far would equal about a 3.5-4 and that's hardly miserly |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | Wham I've heard the band name Wishbone Ash somewhere before, will check 'em |
Aberf
03.09.17 | Quite sad that you don't like Simon & Garfunkel. Well, everyone got their own cup of tea I guess.. |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | Aberf I'm a miserable b'stard at times, don't sweat it |
Aberf
03.09.17 | Nah, you are cool mate. Sometimes I, too, don't like stuffs out of pettiest thing in the world. |
zakalwe
03.09.17 | Fucking hell doof you dig miles!!! Good lad. Yeah that's how I listen to it, I'm not there scrutinising and deliberating over every horn blow and what have you like a jazz prick. I let it play and wash over me as I read a book or something like a prick |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | Yeah, my attention wanders with it but in a sort of natural feeling way, definitely preferred the Miles to the Mingus...although the clown story on that one was unsettling in a good way. |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | It's a Doof list, there were always going to be high profile casualties and you already knew I was going to slate The Who, but the Simon & Garfunkel surprised me just how much I disliked it :D |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | The Dark album was real class today, loved that one |
DinosaurJones
03.09.17 | TBH, it's more entertaining when you dislike something than when you enjoy it. |
DoofusWainwright
03.09.17 | Dino - I probably have the most combined 1's and 1.5's on the site (Rovert620, Potsy or SandwichBubble might have more I'm not sure) so the odds are, wait around long enough and I'll hate something. |
DinosaurJones
03.09.17 | I don't think you can count SandwichBubble. Last I looked he had 13k albums rated. It's probably 15k by now. |
theBoneyKing
03.09.17 | Glad you enjoyed Rodriguez Doof, I agree there are a few weaker songs there but it's still good enough to warrant a 4 from me. Check the documentary on the guy if you get a change, it's a good story. |
Egarran
03.09.17 | I was happier before you introduced the concept of a Nic Cage LotR audiobook. |
ArsMoriendi
03.09.17 | Can't wait for Titan's reaction for that Who 2 |
ArsMoriendi
03.09.17 | My 2 favorite 60s albums are both on this list... be kind Doof |
Ryus
03.09.17 | shit on simon and garfunkel again i dare you :'[ |
budgie
03.09.17 | hey doof stoked you dug the dark album. crazy how it's seems so unknown |
talktothehead
03.09.17 | Doof I think you're going to look at We're Only In This For The Money in a similar way to Mr. Bungle
But probably a rating of like 3.5 or something |
ArsMoriendi
03.09.17 | "Doof I think you're going to look at We're Only In This For The Money in a similar way to Mr. Bungle"
We're Only In This For The Money has so much historical context and satire, something Mr. Bungle doesn't really do at all except for maybe like After School Special from Disco Volante |
talktothehead
03.09.17 | I agree that's why I think it will get a bump
but I think it will be too excessive for him to 4.0 it. Might be wrong tho |
DoofusWainwright
03.11.17 | A few more of these knocked off the list... |
dbizzles
03.11.17 | You've made some solid progress. Read a few off your blurbs. What's your favorite so far? |
DoofusWainwright
03.11.17 | Dbizz - prob the Dr. John but the Dark album surprised me most. Miles Davis was obviously a class act too |
dbizzles
03.11.17 | Might have to check those out. I mostly listen to modern stuff, tbh. But a blast from the past is always interesting from time to time. |
wham49
03.12.17 | Thanks for the fair review of my rec Doof, I feel the same about the Coven and Dr. John albums. |

03.18.17 | jam mine already >:/ |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Cyg I started yours but got interrupted - gotta say, prob going to be a 3-3.5 or something like that. Not sure it's going to rock my world to its foundation. |
Cygnatti
03.18.17 | meh, about right, i guess. can't expect much more ~ |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | I didn't race straight back to it and chose to investigate other stuff on the list first - not a good sign. Might catch me more in the mood a different day though, that happens quite a lot for me |
Cygnatti
03.18.17 | i don't blame yeh, there is a lot you gotta get thru |
SandwichBubble
03.18.17 | I should've thought of a better rec honestly, but glad you ended up enjoying On Graycroft! :) |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | A few more up, everything is now landing at a 3-3.5...is this just a reflection of my rec fatigue or something deeper. You decide.
Also, 60s female singers. As a rule of thumb, not doing it for me. |
ArsMoriendi
03.18.17 | I thought United States female vocals had more of a Grace Slick vibe and than a Nico one, but 3.5/5 isn't bad :P |
DoofusWainwright
03.18.17 | Ars, you're right, they do sound a bit like the vocals on the Jefferson Airplane...I'm just finding all the female singers on this list have this same 60s/70s quality that's not really my thing :/
Anyway, I'm always picky with female lead vocals, this isn't news - just a strange Doof thing I can't totally shake. |
SteveOffProbation
03.18.17 | frnak ocean |
ArsMoriendi
03.20.17 | Yay Doof 5'd my favorite album ever |
DoofusWainwright
03.20.17 | Shouldn't have been too big a surprise with 'One Size' at a 4.5, 'Zoot' at a 4 and I'm not a hippy |
ArsMoriendi
03.20.17 | Zappa hated hippies so much, but I honestly don't hate them... don't love them either though.
I feel like WOiIftM shows Zappa as a neutral party between the hippies and the conservatives/police during the 60s, which is a great place for him to be since he can apply criticism to both without being subjected to hypocrisy
Centrists really are the best haha |
AngryLittleAlchemist
03.20.17 | DUDE DOOFUS!
OMG IM SO GLAD YOU LOVED MY REC : p SUCH A GOOD ALBUM! |
DoofusWainwright
03.20.17 | Yeah, I didn't find his message on the album obnoxious in any way |
wham49
03.20.17 | Ars, no big shock, nobody can deny how great that album is, even Doof |
ArsMoriendi
03.20.17 | "Ars, no big shock, nobody can deny how great that album is, even Doof"
Unless they accidentally check the 80s remaster where Chad Wackerman drums over the original drums and where Let's Make the Water Turn Black was sped up and a number of other terrible things :(
I want to destroy every copy of that remaster lol |
DoofusWainwright
03.20.17 | The Dr. John is the album I've spun the most here, about 10 times so far. That's definitely a 5, incredible album. Prefer it to any Tom Waits album surprisingly. |
Tunaboy45
03.20.17 | David Bowie- Hunky Dory |
DoofusWainwright
03.20.17 | Tuna dude, to think I haven't rated that one...
I haven't listened to 'Space Oddity' so could put that album up? |
Tunaboy45
03.20.17 | Oh sorry man I didn't realise it was albums you hadn't rated just listed one of my favourite albums in that time span that wasn't on the list haha
yeah sure, it's a solid album too well worth checking |

03.20.17 | @Doof: Can't wait for Fripp to rec you Absolutely Free |

butcherboy
06.26.17 | late to the party, but I rec Miles Davis, A lift to the scaffold.. what're your views on jazzy jazz, Doof? |
DoofusWainwright
06.26.17 | Butcher, I've rated a Miles Davis on the list already with a 4.5, so as jazz goes, that's the sort of jazz I get on with. The 'free jazz' rec on the list above I couldn't handle. I'm trying to really finish this list now so I can move onto a possible new rec list - I can take something non jazz from you if you think I'm going to be really impressed by it (you can cheat and see what I've already rated high already...). All I ask, not an artist already on the list. |
butcherboy
06.26.17 | I'll stay patiently waiting in shadows for the new rec list, cooking up recs.. |

Prob not since he's British or something. >:| |
TheSpaceMan
06.26.17 | Poetry doesn't have to rhyme |
DoofusWainwright
06.26.17 | I don't conform to logic, that is true. I'm not saying I 100% trust my own first impressions, but they tend to serve me ok. Clearly funk/jazz/soul/trad folk/prog/noise are all slightly problematic genres for me (as evidenced above).
Not insurmountable, I can enjoy music in most genres, but my patience gets tested quicker in those ones. |
ShaquilleONeal
06.26.17 | I'm not sure if youre still accepting suggestions, but Odessey and Oracle by the Zombies is one of the best 60's albums imo. |
