04.26.17 | Costa Rica is my favorite country |
theBoneyKing
04.26.17 | Well my original point wasn't 100% serious first of all.
That said, his saying that country's simplicity is too limiting shows that he does not have much experience in the genre as there is plenty of country that is not "simple".
Regardless of that, what he said rests on the assumption that complex music is better than simple music, or at least that the best music is complex - an assumption that I very much disagree with. |
TheTripP
04.26.17 | all music is subjective anywho no matter the genre, I just want more knowledge in country because I am curious to actually find some good stuff plus not being the "fuck all country music" douche |

DominionMM1
04.05.18 | need some 80s country up in here |
theBoneyKing
04.05.18 | Not really, as with every other genre the 80s were pretty dismal for country outside of a few artists, such as Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakam, and Rodney Crowell (who would all go on to do even better things in the 90s or later). Probably some others I’m forgetting or not aware of but 90s 70s and 00s are really the way to go for country. |
SandwichBubble
04.05.18 | You have 1 rating from 1980 boney, where is this talk coming from |
theBoneyKing
04.05.18 | Well, some stuff I haven’t heard closely or recently enough to rate, others I’m aware of songs just not albums.
I’m always open to hearing more stuff of course, but in my investigations I just have not found much terribly worthwhile country from the 80s. |
theBoneyKing
04.05.18 | For example while I haven’t any stuff rated by them I’ve heard a decent amount of stuff by artists such as George Strait, Garth Brooks and Randy Travis as well - enough to say I don’t find them terribly impressive. Off the top of my head I can’t think of other popular acts of the 80s who didn’t have greater success in other decades. |
SandwichBubble
04.05.18 | Sounds like a case of major label syndrome. Try digging a bit in the independent 80s scene. |
theBoneyKing
04.05.18 | Recs? I do like some of The Mekons and Jason and the Scorchers, but they’re more crossover cowpunk than pure country. I’ve got that Songs From Suicide Bridge album I know you love already too.
Idk man, every new 80s album I check further confirms my belief that the entire decade was a mistake, music-wise :-/ |
combustion07
04.05.18 | Waylon Jennings all day "if ya wanna get to Heaven gotta d-i-e, gotta put on ya suit and t-i-e" make a cold motion like a d-o-g and check it |
neekafat
04.05.18 | Check Dixie chicks first (; |
DominionMM1
04.05.18 | "Not really, as with every other genre the 80s were pretty dismal for country"
what other genres, exactly?
and to dismiss an entire decade of country as not worthwhile is disingenuous at best |
theBoneyKing
04.05.18 | Imo the 80s were the worst decade for music, at least since music “got good” in the 50s/60s.
I’m being a bit reductive just because I like to shit on the 80s, of course there were good artists in country in the 80s as in other genres, it’s just that in my experience those artists weren’t that good or as I said did better things in other decades (and hence I wouldn’t really characterize them as truly 80s acts). |
TheTripP
04.05.18 | Yeah the 80's SUCK! Jk I have no idea... I have been coming back to this here and there then get lost in new music. But I still am enjoying this list a lot. I keep coming back to Deer Tick and Sturgill Simpson quite often! |
DominionMM1
04.05.18 | the 80s saw the introduction and popularization of neotraditional country which featured a sound and style akin to the honky tonk country of the late 40s/50s with tinges of bluegrass thrown in (e.g. george strait, randy travis, dwight yoakam, etc). then of course you had the "class of '89" when clint black, garth brooks, and alan jackson all had major breakout hits in that year. it may not be for everybody but it's a huge part in the history of country music. |
theBoneyKing
04.05.18 | That’s certainly a relevant movement, I’ll give you that (indeed I mentioned all those artists above myself) I just don’t think it resulted in much good music. The rise of alt-country and Americana in the late 80s/90s really revitalized the genre as a whole. |
DominionMM1
04.05.18 | in terms of popularity it was those 80s artists who really brought country music back to relevancy |
bgillesp
04.11.18 | The new Steep Canyon Rangers is real good |
