05.30.17 | I would include Earthtone 9 in this list. |

05.30.17 | Ocean Grove is abysmal |

05.30.17 | I still say that when people think "nu-metal" they are thinking of POD / Linkin Park / Limp Bizkit / Korn and the like. And MOST of that stuff is pretty not good.
But your list has Pulse Ultra (fucking about time someone other than me listed it), Boy Hits Car, Deftones, Nonpoint (the best one, and the least nu-metallish), Sevendust, Mudvayne and Deftones. Most of which are beyond what nu-metal really is.
If I could spark a movement to call those bands something else, I absolutely would, because they get shit on for a label that doesn't even apply to them. Listen to Nookie and then go listen to Mudvayne's "Prod" and tell me that is the same fucking genre. |
0GuyMan0
05.30.17 | So addendum to my last response: Either those bands are a different genre or the ratio of good to bad bands in nu is about the same as it was / is in metalcore. |
cloakanddagger
05.30.17 | Earthtone9 isn't really nu metal.
Although I guess nu metal is a little like grunge in that case, where a lot of the bands go above and beyond the label and the name has more to do with the timeframe as opposed to the musical characteristics.
Although having said that, one thing all nu metal bands definitely have in common is the use of syncopation, similarly to how grunge bands all have a fairly muddy guitar tone. |
Dewinged
05.30.17 | Actually 19 is probably the best nu-metal album of all time. |
Dewinged
05.30.17 | Yeah E9 were a bit too prog for nu-metal? I don't know, they were around that time, same as Ultraspank, Spineshank, American Head Charge, all those... |
0GuyMan0
05.30.17 | I can't agree with that even a little bit...
Also this list needs Blindside. Everyone forgets Blindside. |
ScuroFantasma
05.30.17 | "Listen to Nookie and then go listen to Mudvayne's "Prod" and tell me that is the same fucking genre."
I mean listen to Nookie and compare it to Blind or Heretic Anthem or Down with the Sickness. Other than all the bottom of the barrel shit that came after the bands on this list, nu-metal bands have never really sounded similar to me anyway. The genre is a pretty big catch-all for a lot of bands that would otherwise fall somewhere in between alternative, grunge, hip-hop, and heavy metal and share some similarities. |
cloakanddagger
05.30.17 | Basically backing up what I said in my previous comment, nu metal bands are pretty diverse, the main thing characterising them as "nu metal" being the syncopated riffs. |
ScuroFantasma
05.30.17 | Yeah, that and the other hip-hop elements |
0GuyMan0
05.30.17 | I agree completely. "Alt Metal" is what it really should have been. Rap-metal could have had its own subgenre. I'm nitpicking, but its because I contend that there were actually GREAT albums released in that time period, and they are criminally ignored because of timing. Its a shame.
By the way, except for stupid lyrics I contend that Nookie is a great song. |
ScuroFantasma
05.30.17 | Anyway great list, this is prety much all of them. I'd add Slipknot - Vol.3, Sepultura - Roots, and Hemet - Meantime (a bit tenuous). |
ScuroFantasma
05.30.17 | Nookie is fun as hell.
And yeah agreed, lots of great albums have been slapped with the nu-metal tag, but that's more of a problem with people's perception of the genre rather than mislabelling imo. Just because it has a bad reputation, that shouldn't exclude good bands from the tag. Nu-metal does not = bad alt metal or something. |
cloakanddagger
05.30.17 | I haven't jammed Nookie in years, should probably revisit it.
I wouldn't put Meantime on a nu metal list, it came before Korn and I'm pretty sure they hate being labelled nu metal anyway. |
0GuyMan0
05.30.17 | Agree with that too. Its like when people put Rage Against the Machine in nu-metal lists....wtfareyoudoing?!?! Rage inadvertently laid the groundwork at most.
Nu-metal begins with Korn. No question.
I have a nu-metal list as well you should look at, exactly this subject matter. You have many of the best, but 30 Seconds to Mars' debut is another one that I think you could add. |
Thalassic
05.30.17 | 1, 5, 9, 12 and 22 all rule

05.30.17 | "So addendum to my last response: Either those bands are a different genre or the ratio of good to bad bands in nu is about the same as it was / is in metalcore."
Pretty much yeah, though I think the situation is much, much worse in modern metalcore.
"I wouldn't put Meantime on a nu metal list, it came before Korn and I'm pretty sure they hate being labelled nu metal anyway."
That's fair, the link is very weak, but they usually appear on these kinds of lists often and they're quite good, so worth a mention.

05.30.17 | Modern metalcore good is basically August Burns Red and.......MAAAAYBBBEEE Miss May I? I don't like them much but they appear to be competent songwriters. |
