Here's what I started using |
mortifierftw
02.14.18 | I always bring them but don't always use them. Outdoor concerts aren't near as bad, like when I saw Third Eye Blind live, but indoor concerts like Touché Amore I had to put them in |
Wildcardbitchesss
02.14.18 | deathwish inc has some pretty good plugs for $20
If anyone gives you shit for it just laugh, they're gonna be the ones with tinnitus before too long |
Inveigh
02.14.18 | I wear earplugs at 80% of the shows I go to. If it's a death metal, sludge or post-metal show, I'm generally wearing them.
ear health is important. I didn't wear plugs for the first few years I played in a band, let alone going to shows, and paid the price. |
JS19
02.14.18 | One concert can wreck your hearing instantly. Be smart and use earplugs ppl (i have standard etymotic ones because i keep losing them but does the trick) - it's like using a seat belt in a car, completely moronic not to and literally only driven by stupid bravado |
BigPleb
02.14.18 | I normally just get them at the concert but yeah, definitely recommend wearing them.
Blocks out all those nasty frequencies and gives you a more full, round sound tbh. |
BigBlob
02.14.18 | all it took was one KMFDM concert and I have tinnitus for 6 years now. I used to laugh at wearing earplugs but now I'd do anything to go back and wear them. its no joke |
Davil667
02.14.18 | Would never go to a show without earplugs, I just can't enjoy the music if it's too loud. In some cases it's even too loud with earplugs for my liking. What sense does it make to turn up the volume to a level where nothing is distinguishable anymore? Totally destroys the music and the experience for me... |
BigBlob
02.14.18 | honestly have no idea why most bands have their volume so fking loud. fair enough if its a massive venue, but the number of times I've been to a small gig and the whole sound is turned up to 11. the noise just bounces around and sounds like a mess |
JS19
02.14.18 | In a small venue, the sound system isn't as refined - and you need to balance the sound against the drum kit which means it's way easier to just boost the volume so it's level than mess about with each individual instrument I've found anyway |
DungeonBoy
02.14.18 | Would never go to a show without earplugs [2]
I don't know a single person with tinnitus that doesn't regret not taking better care of their ears at shows. Don't be stupid. Wear earplugs.

DinosaurJones
02.14.18 | I almost always wear earplugs to shows. There are some I've been to where I wait until it starts to see if it's a comfortable level without them, but I always have them on me. I also play at/go to a lot of local shows, and people are retarded as shit and don't know how to play for smaller rooms and just want to play as loud as possible.
In short, I wear ear plugs a lot. Band practice, local shows, big shows. |
Feather
02.14.18 | Wow. I had no idea earplugs were such a common practice... good to know! I guess I should have started wearing them earlier. Honestly the sound at these last 3 shows was all better with the earplugs in. Took some getting used to at the first show.
@mortifier I see what you are saying. I can imagine a large outdoor venue being fine without them, but its those tiny hardcore shows in an enclosed space where I feel like I really need them |
RogueNine
02.14.18 | I don't go to many shows but I don't wear 'em. Having said that, I probably should. And you're definitely not alone. At the metal shows I've been to, seems like the folks who wear earplugs slightly outweigh those who don't. |
Feather
02.15.18 | @Rogue If you get em, I don't think you'd regret it. Can't speak for any other brands and such, but the ones I got I feel like I could really hear all the music better.
On another note, maybe I just didn't realize people were wearing them because many aren't noticeable. Mine are completely transparent and really jammed in the ear so people can't really see them. |
DinosaurJones
02.15.18 | I just buy the generic ones from the pharmacy. It looks like I have green taffy sticking out of my ears, but idgaf. |
soymilk13
02.15.18 | don't listen to these nerds, earplugs are for babies |
DinosaurJones
02.15.18 | Yeh, hearing is overrated. The only sound I need to hear is a high-pitched ringing/keening. For the rest of my life. |
BenThatsMyJamin
02.15.18 | I'm going to Converge + Crowbar in April which will undoubtedly be incredibly loud and was thinking about getting some 'plugs for that and future. Just wondering if they are able to stay in whilst moshing/violently headbanging (I mean, Converge and fucking Crowbar at the same show...) as I want to get some hi-fidelity ones but they won't be worth it there's a chance of me losing them in a pit |
DinosaurJones
02.15.18 | Just buy some generic ones, and shove a bunch in your pockets. If you lose one, just jam another one in. |
BenThatsMyJamin
02.15.18 | Yeah but good qual ones retain sound quality instead of muffling it and could potentially last me for years so are a good investment if they stay in |
DinosaurJones
02.15.18 | True that. I just don't know if I'm responsible enough to not lose a good pair. |
JS19
02.15.18 | Come with a little carrying case often |
JS19
02.15.18 | also I'm going to that London Converge show too, and last time i wore em to a Converge show they stayed in fine |
DominionMM1
02.15.18 | I've only worn them when i saw the body open up for neurosis for a few shows a couple years ago |
DungeonBoy
02.15.18 | Saw the body recently and holy smokes they were loud |
DominionMM1
02.15.18 | yeah man i saw them three nights in a row and after the first night i had to get earplugs because of how loud and dense they were |
WatchItExplode
02.15.18 | One Built to Spill show where Doug messed with his looper for a half hour got some really nasty frequencies going, made me physically ill, and left me feeling like I was at the bottom of a swimming pool for a week. Def sport earplugs for most indoor shows, and try to stick to outdoor venues just because of that experience. |

10.20.21 | had a very bad ear pain/ringing problem earlier this year to the point where I couldn't listen to music for days. one day when I was listening to music I felt a very intense pain in my ear. and then my ears were just fucked for days. will always wear earplugs at concerts if I even decide to ever go to one, probably won't for a while |

10.20.21 | People really don't take take tinnitus seriously enough. Ditch the earphones for headphones guys. |
LeddSledd
10.20.21 | I spent at least that much on a pair of custom earplugs for being in a loud ass band in high school for years, still use em. absolutely worth preserving my hearing effectively |
Colton
10.20.21 | "Ditch the earphones for headphones guys."
that doesn't prevent hearing loss |
GhandhiLion
10.20.21 | Also lower your volume a SHIT TON and get use to it. |

10.20.21 | Earphones are more of a risk than headphones |
Ryus
10.20.21 | dont be a pussy and wear earplugs |

10.20.21 | never tbh |
Colton
10.20.21 | how are earphones more of a risk than headphones |
bgillesp
10.20.21 | Had no idea they made earplugs meant for making concerts still sound good. Never tried earplugs because I assumed they would all distort which frequencies were coming through or something (not that that makes a ton of sense but I’d never thought about it much). Might actually order some of these and try them if I ever get the chance to go to shows again with my schedule |
Feather
10.20.21 | earplugs at concerts are a must. earphones versus headphones ... not sure it really matters. |
Feather
10.20.21 | @bgillesp good earplugs make shows sound better imo ... still using the same ~$30 pair since originally making this list. |
Ryus
10.20.21 | they can actually make concerts sound better
edit: what feather said |

10.20.21 | Do your thing, you paid for the damn ticket |
bgillesp
10.20.21 | That’s good to know. I went to a good handful of shows every year in college but now it’s only once in a blue moon. If I see some can’t-miss stuff pop up, I’ll probably order these |
GhandhiLion
10.20.21 | @colton
Earphones channel the sounds directly into the ear canal which is more damaging. They also push the earwax deeper into your ear (This was common for me when I was younger) meaning that you have to turn the volume up more. |
GhandhiLion
10.20.21 | There's a rule that says something like, less than 60 db(60%?) for 60minutes a day. I remember finding out that you actually need lower than that to prevent damage. And that's without taking multiple hours into consideration. |
Anthracks
10.20.21 | yes i wear them because i care about my body |
Wildcardbitchesss
10.20.21 | saw touche amore last night and forgot em, ears are still ringing.
gonna start keeping them in my car tbh |
GhandhiLion
10.20.21 | Ah it was 60/60 rule and it's %. I wonder how helpful that is given max volume varies between devices. |

People who still want some kind of frequency balance instead of just getting rid of the high ones and making shows sound muffled rather than quieter. |
