TheSpaceMan
04.18.18 | Fuck that's tough uhh morrowind probs |
Sinternet
04.18.18 | morrowind is better but neither of them have aged particularly well - seems to be a running trend with bethesda games unfortunately |
TheSpaceMan
04.18.18 | Yeah morrowinds combat system is somehow worse than oblivions and skyrims |
kris.
04.18.18 | okay here's the deal
morrowind is the better game BUT if skyrim was your first, morrowind will feel like a completely different game to you. it's infinitely more complex in terms of leveling and gameplay.
oblivion is much more of an idyllic high fantasy setting with some mediocre writing and quest lines but it's also a little easier to get into than morrowind thanks to some simplified stats and QOL improvements.
either one can suck a couple hundred hours out of your life tho. |

04.18.18 | Oblivion by a loooooong shot |

04.18.18 | Play Oblivion next. Unless you can mod the fuck out of Morrowind it's a bit too dated. |

04.18.18 | Plus Oblivion has the most entertaining quests. |

04.18.18 | I loved Oblivion but I was playing on crappy pc so the waiting times were really annoying.

04.18.18 | Morrowind is my fave game of all time so def Morrowind. |
Deathconscious
04.18.18 | id say go with Oblivion next. Morrowind has aged pretty terribly. |
mifzal
04.18.18 | both are unplayable even with mods. But Morrowind is more dense, So I'm more excited for skywind |
RadicalEd
04.18.18 | Tbh they have both aged horrendously.
Like, if we're being real, with the benefit of hindsight both games are not great at all.
But if you're into the Bethesda games and liked Skyrim, I guess Oblivion is way more similar and if you mod it, it doesn't look like potatoehead-people adventures.
|
mifzal
04.18.18 | The only games from the 90'and 00's that aged well were those in 2D format. |
Astral Abortis
04.18.18 | Nah, a lot of games have aged fine. Bethesda's games still look fine imo, they just play like ass.
Oblivion is broken in almost every aspect but the quests are so good that it's still worth playing. |
Deathconscious
04.18.18 | Metal Arms, Resident Evil, Paper Mario (only partially 2D despite the name), Metroid, etc. have all aged fine and are still fun. |
RadicalEd
04.18.18 | "Nah, a lot of games have aged fine. Bethesda's games still look fine imo, they just play like ass."
I mean even if you think they don't look fine, you can get some amazing mods for the visuals. But the gameplay is horrid. |
Demon of the Fall
04.18.18 | I've never felt the urge to go back & play them for the reasons outlined above, I can imagine going back & playing older Fallout titles (after 4) would have the same outcome, in fact I was late to Oblivion & couldn't get into it. I still play Skyrim sometimes though. |
Astral Abortis
04.18.18 | #RadEd...that's exactly what I already said |
TheSpaceMan
04.18.18 | Can we talk about how good REmake looks still like I know its pre rendered but holy shit 2002 gamecube how did u do that |

04.18.18 | mod the level-scaling out of Oblivion before you start it |

Demon of the Fall
04.18.18 | What exactly is being remade & will it be available to console users? (guessing not) |
Astral Abortis
04.18.18 | Just don't bother about difficulty in Oblivion, turn the difficulty slider to 0 and just breeze through the game at maximum fun. |
Deathconscious
04.18.18 | that would be boring as shit. |
Astral Abortis
04.18.18 | "What exactly is being remade & will it be available to console users? (guessing not)"
We're talking about the 2001 (?) Gamecube remake of Resident Evil. Referred to as the REmake. There's also a modern HD REmake for modern consoles. I highly recommend buying it on Xbox One, PS4, or PC. |
Astral Abortis
04.18.18 | "that would be boring as shit."
Nope. Oblivion was never good for its combat or difficulty...it's fun solely for its dynamic and interesting quests, which have no bearing on the difficulty slider (keeping the difficulty slider on the default literally makes the game unplayable at higher levels due to how poorly optimised it is, not to mention the levelling system can be broken to the point where to can have an OP super-character at level 1 with maxed out stats). |
Astral Abortis
04.18.18 | I mean literally the best way to level up is to make all your main skills Minor Skills, then do the Gray Prince quest, turn the difficulty up to max and then go ham with your fave abilities in the arena against the Gray Prince. Heal him after two hours when his health finally dwindles to low. Voila! You have maxed out destruction, restoration, illusion, conjuration, blade, blunt, archery, etc. |
Demon of the Fall
04.18.18 | Ignore me, thought we were still talking about Elder Scrolls. |
Astral Abortis
04.18.18 | We are discussing both |
Casavir
04.18.18 | Morrowind for the reasons stated above. I still love Oblivion but there are some mods that need to be installed at all times in order for the game to be playable as intended. |
mifzal

mifzal
04.18.18 | Yeah RES HD is pretty great |

04.18.18 | New Bethesda game will come out late this year or early next. I'm so glad they're starting a few new IPs. They've butchered Elder Scrolls and Fallout so badly I want a new IP with no expectations. |
mifzal
04.18.18 | Like the No Man's Sky we deserve |
Demon of the Fall
04.18.18 | I won't actually end up playing any new IPs whereas the next time a new Fallout or Elder Scrolls comes out (even a remake) I'll be all over it.
Probably something to do with familiarity/emotional investment or something, perhaps it's just laziness. |
Deathconscious
04.18.18 | There are a couple other No Man's Sky-esque space simulators coming out, im sure one of them will be better than that massive letdown. |

04.18.18 | Overall, I'd say Morrowind
But I still standby with saying that Oblivion has the best questlines/sidequests in the franchise |
ConcubinaryCode
04.18.18 | Morrowind is now backwards compatible on Xbox. Why not play the best elder scrolls game on the most powerful console ever created™? |
Faenrir
04.18.18 | None of them. Morrowind has cool atmosphere but combat is the worst (very clunky).
Play The Witcher 3 instead, much better game than either.
Or Divinity Original Sin (1&2) |

04.18.18 | I just finally got back into Skyrim, put 40 hours in in the past 2 weeks. |
Demon of the Fall
04.18.18 | Does anyone have any cool ideas to spice up a battle-mage in Skyrim? I'm using shock magic (looks cool) & illusion mainly. I keep a shield & mace but never really use them. I can't work out what other skills to use to make it more interesting, everything seems unnecessary but feel like I should craft just for something different. |
LamboGD
04.18.18 | Haven't played oblivion, but I really enjoyed morrowind. Sure it has terrible combat, but I loved the gameplay otherwise, especially how it encouraged exploration. I also think it does the "being on an adventure" feeling better than skyrim |
Azertherion
04.18.18 | Morrowind is a great game if you enjoy the "getting lost" apsect of Elder Scrolls, because it's wayyyyy less noob friendly than Skyrim is. Quests especially are quite tricky.
Oblivion is more modern and is a nice compromise between the two. Graphically it was ahead of it's time for sure. Not all guilds are worth thought, the mages guild is one of the best of TES while the Assassin way is completly uninteresting. |
Meridiu5
04.18.18 | Best advice for builds in skyrim is to only level one skill. If you level more than one the monster level outgrows your damage output
Thats one problem with skyrim. Its one dimensional compared with the prior two |
kris.
04.18.18 | just be aware that Oblivion's scaling and leveling system is fucking BROKEN and plan accordingly. i'd look up some guides to try and effectively level if you're gonna play vanilla. |
McP3000
04.18.18 | I agree with Xenophanes.
There is a good chance you'll end up liking Morrowind the most, but Oblivion would be better to play first as a segway from Skyrim to Morrowind.
Playing Morrowind is more similar to playing a 3D DnD game, rather than a modern western RPG. |
Faenrir
04.18.18 | "Best advice for builds in skyrim is to only level one skill. If you level more than one the monster level outgrows your damage output"

JWT155
04.18.18 | I thought the Dark Brotherhood was awesome in Oblivion, the Thieves Guild was prob my favorite though. I also agree with Xeno, Oblivion mechanically is closer to Skyrim and will prob be better to play first and then ease into morrowind. |
teamster
04.18.18 | Tell me some of you played the Kings Field games on PlayStation... |
BallsToTheWall
04.18.18 | Good advice fam, I'll start with Oblivion. |

StarlessCore
04.18.18 | morrowind is so much better than the rest its not even funnyt |
StarlessCore
04.18.18 | lmao idc about graphics im more about content
the content in morrowind is genius
the content in oblivion is generally not |
StarlessCore
04.18.18 | on xbox i bet morrowind is absolutely awful tho
i only play the modded pc version |
StarlessCore
04.18.18 | yea bad engine
wonderful game
so much better than oblivion for its content that its kinda a laughable quality dip |
StarlessCore
04.18.18 | r u 10 |
StarlessCore
04.18.18 | just play morrowind on xbox and deal with the early game and walking speed its worth it if you can get over that stupid hump |
StarlessCore
04.18.18 | quests r p bad, writing is poor, environment was very copy/paste, dungeons were copy/paste
morrowind poops on it |
StarlessCore
04.18.18 | oh ive played lots of oblivion son im just not braindead |
klap
04.18.18 | The writing and depth of content in morrowind is so much better than oblivion (which I loved) that it’s like comparing a novel to a coloring book |
kris.
04.18.18 | "So you've never played Oblivion. Gotcha."
but uhhh he's right.
look i love oblivion but you can't deny that it's pretty damn bland in terms of writing and quality of quests compared to morrowind. the environment is also cookie-cutter high fantasy. vvardenfell is infinitely more of an interesting place than cyrodiil. |
kris.
04.18.18 | michael kirkbride never should've left bethsoft. |
Veldin
04.18.18 | I'd recommend Oblivion because it will be easier to get into and it's so damn fun. Make sure to get the Shivering Isles expansion (including in GOTY edition). I actually just started Morrowind GOTY and it's super intriguing, but definitely tougher getting into. Got a head start by getting that 600 gold item in the room where you pick your sign and class. Just finished the quest where I watch the guy at night from the lighthouse. Any tips for a beginner? I don't even know how to level up lol |
Veldin
04.18.18 | Also as mentioned earlier, Morrowind is now backwards compatible with Xbox One |
Deathconscious
04.18.18 | i dont have a problem with the cookie cutter fantasy setting. i think it was done well, its just the copy/paste nature of the game that brought it down. |
klap
04.19.18 | Oblivion is only a better game in the technical sense (ie graphics) and its fighting system. Morrowind has levitate and mark/recall so automatically better |
Astral Abortis
04.19.18 | Morrowind: Pros: best story, lore, mechanical depth, setting, style. Cons: clunky and terrible gameplay, learning curve, levelling curve.
Oblivion: Pros: most fun quests. Cons: broken in every other aspect.
Skyrim: Pros: uhhh....? Cons: everything. |
Astral Abortis
04.19.18 | I think that needing to mod a game is a huge con. I hate modding and only do it if necessary. Case in point, the only odded games out of the 100+ on my PC are all Bethesda titles. These aren't mods for fun, these are mods the make the games playable in 2018. |
Astral Abortis
04.19.18 | Oh right I've also got dsfix on Dark Souks, and a resolution mod on Nioh. In both cases needing to get those is a con.
I dont like mods in general. I'm boring and I only want the vanilla experience designed by the developer. |
kris.
04.19.18 | every 6 or so months, i get the itch to jump back into skyrim and then it's all i do for a few weeks. that game is eternal imo. |
Astral Abortis
04.19.18 | I hated Skyrim from the very beginning. It always was and always will be a huge let down and a massive step in the wrong direction to fix the problems with the series. |
mifzal
04.19.18 | I don't know it was instant love for me |
Astral Abortis
04.19.18 | Eh i get how it could be enjoyable for some but it embodies everything i hate about open world "RPG"s |
JWT155
04.19.18 | What exactly did you hate about skyrim Astral Abortis? Just genuinely curious, chances are I'll agree with you on most of your points, sad fact is that with the increased popularity in the Elder Scrolls and Bethesda as a studio is that their content is going to be more streamlined and targeted for larger audience appeal which will mean an RPG that is heavily scaled back in terms of complexity in favor of broader appeal. |
JWT155
04.19.18 | Eh I would argue it's more streamlined. I feel like things like puzzles or having to really search an area for an item, person etc are some core RPG elements and Skyrim definitely has very straight forward quests where your compass points you exactly where you need to go, there's very little deduction and puzzle solving and most of the quests can be finished with very little thought. You can still finish quests multiple ways but I feel like in the past ingenuity and thinking outside of the box were much more encouraged. |
Storm In A Teacup
04.19.18 | I just want Borderlands 3, KOTOR 2, Jade Empire, Jedi Knight Jedi Academy, State of Decay 2, Morrowind, and then I'll never need another game for 6 months |
Storm In A Teacup
04.19.18 | Oh fuck and also Mercenaries 1 |
Gyromania
04.19.18 | morrowind is leagues ahead of oblivion, which is flat and boring af, despite being a visual treat at the time.
i think skyrim is mad overrated. the thing i hate about elder scrolls games is their worlds seem super padded with boring ass fetch quests and unintuitive gameplay. would take the witcher 3 any day over any elder scrolls title |
Storm In A Teacup
04.19.18 | Cant you just turn off the compass? |
budgie
04.19.18 | there's a mod for skyrim called R.E.Q.U.I.E.M. which makes it more like baldur's gate, and actually pretty fun, i'd recommend that
for morrowind, there's morrowind rebirth, adds lots of good content.
i'd love if anyone knew a mod for oblivion that is similar to R.E.Q.U.I.E.M. |
StarlessCore
04.19.18 | "morrowind is leagues ahead of oblivion, which is flat and boring af, despite being a visual treat at the time. "
ayy a brain in here
|
Astral Abortis
04.20.18 | @budg: sounds like instead of doing that you could just play better RPGs instead. Like Baldur's Gate |
budgie
04.20.18 | yeah idk i just don't play anything anymore, and i've played enough of baldur's gate and icewind dale over the years. if there was a proper mod for oblivion though (like r.e.q.u.i.e.m.) i would consider revisiting it, i remember it being so cozy, running through the forests in the rain, but the actual combat gameplay and leveling was shallow and lame. |
Astral Abortis
04.20.18 | You should try Pillars of Eternity if you want a new Baldur's Gate experience with a modern game. Sequel coming out next month too |
Gyromania
04.20.18 | Also second snox's comment re baldur's gate. |
budgie
04.20.18 | pillars of eternity was fun! never did get around to the expansion, or whatever it was |
Gyromania
04.20.18 | Anyone play divinity 1 and 2? Those are pretty stellar |
Astral Abortis
04.20.18 | The original games or the Original Sin games? |
Maco097
04.20.18 | Both are outdated and boring to play nowadays |
Astral Abortis
04.20.18 | The Original Sin games are very new and play like a dream. Original Sin 2 is one of the best D&D-like games ever because you truly feel like you can do anything. |
Astral Abortis
04.20.18 | The original games are indeed very dated though. Like the black sheep of the isometric RPG boom. |
Gyromania
04.20.18 | The new ones. Original sin 2 is a masterpiece of the highest order |
Astral Abortis
04.20.18 | Except the voice acting. I hate all the voice actors. |
