Yes, most mainstream hiphop has always been simple because that is what's accessible. But if you're arguing simple & accessible = bad then would it not be fair to say rock has always sucked because a band like The Beatles wrote simply structured compositions?
Also your opinion on lyricism has no basis. Just saying that rapping about cars, money and bitches doesn't imply that that is a bad thing, and saying every rappers' lyrics consist of these topics just shows that you haven't listened to much hiphop. I guess this is a troll account though based on your avatar and 0 ratings, but I thought I'd give my 2 cents. |

04.28.18 | I think mainstream as a whole has low-quality output. Hip-hop/electronic just happens to be what is trending the most, but it's not the sole genre that can shoulder the blame. To say the whole classification is devoid of any value is ultimately subjective. I know that I personally don't see much in hip-hop or rap--I've tried, the stuff that clicks for me is few and far between--but it's simply not for me by the end of the day. Works for some, not others.
I will say that ambient music is one genre that I can't get behind. It really does just come out as uniform, unengaging background noise. Yeah, that's most likely the intent of ambient 9/10 times, but that doesn't make it any better. |
Deathconscious
04.28.18 | i dont like a lot of straight ambient, but i get totally lost in some of the stuff i do like. puts me in a trance. Shrine - Somnia especially. i think the genre is usually better when mixed with influences from more engaging genres though. |
MarsKid
04.28.18 | @Adolf yeah, when combined/mixed in with other genres it can be very effective. But a lot of what I've heard never goes anywhere, just aimlessly drifts. Ambiance to me can involve a lot more elements than what is typically incorporated. |
Deathconscious
04.28.18 | have you heard A Winged Victory for the Sullen - s/t? that album is fucking gorgeous, mixes ambient with neoclassical. |
MarsKid
04.28.18 | I'd be willing to try it, probably. Always up to attempts. I just don't want the usual meandering beeps and bloops and wooshes. I like something with emotional impact, a bit of a bite to it, and generally something that goes somewhere. |
hal1ax
04.28.18 | I treat ambient as sort of a supplement to just meditative periods. Like to put them on and just lie down and think. But ya if you’re looking for stimulative music it’s definitely not going to be effective. |
MarsKid
04.28.18 | It doesn't necessarily have to stimulate me heavily, but when it's so similar to a passable breeze, I'd rather just go outside and feel the breeze there. |

04.28.18 | "Seriously why do we have to put the Beatles on a pedestal? Also I'm not trolling I'm just speaking my mind here"
The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worthy of being saved. In a sense, the Beatles are emblematic of the status of rock criticism as a whole: too much attention paid to commercial phenomena (be it grunge or U2) and too little to the merits of real musicians. If somebody composes the most divine music but no major label picks him up and sells him around the world, a lot of rock critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a musician who is as stereotyped as can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of rock criticism: rock critics are basically publicists working for major labels, distributors and record stores. They simply highlight what product the music business wants to make money from. |

04.28.18 | @SharkTooth
This is largely signified by the fact that bands like The Moody Blues, The Mothers of Invention, Procol Harum, The Who, Cream, Captain Beefheart, etc. were already releasing well-developed and musically adventurous releases at the very beginning of their discographies while The Beatles were only just starting to get better after 5 or 6 LPs. |

I disagree, actually. According to some, there are (or were) 4 main elements of hip hop: DJ'ing (beats), MC'ing (rapping), b-boying (breakdancing, other), and graffiti. Obviously, you don't need to do all 4 of them to make hip hop. The vast majority of beats are electronic-based, yes, but not all of them. Freestyle rap, battle rap, any rap without beats, and beatbox rapping or some other forms are all hip hop but not electronic. |

11.10.20 | For people who genuinely believe this, I don't care how little musicianship ability your average rapper possesses. What rappers have done to lyricism is absolutely incredible. The story-telling. The seamless incorporation of clever wordplay, allegory, metaphors, and similes. The sheer skill involved in multi-syllabic rhyming alone is something worthy of respect. Finding and lifting a beautiful melody from an obscure record and then finetuning it in a way that complements the rapper's vocals also takes skill. Which isn't to say all or even most hip hop production is sample dependent. Don't make the mistake of correlating complexity and high caliber musicianship with classic, timeless music. A lot of complex, adept music is overwrought pretentious garbage. |
