| PERFECT SONGS 2.. THE FINAL SHOWDOWN..
+++++++++++++++-+++++++++++++++ | 1 | | Meredith Monk Key
Alright, here we are.. The final challenge is this.. Set me a MOOD, and then build me a NINE SONG PLAYLIST to it.. like putting together a soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist.. A maximum of TWO INSTRUMENTALS is allowed, as they are much easier to set a mood with.. Good luck, and let's see who goes home with the grand prize..
Fripp (returning champ)
Ars (great ___ hope) | 2 | | Julia Holter Loud City Song
Fripp 2-10
World - Love how patiently this song gathers layers, but stays bare.. melancholic and somewhat sinister.. the string section is just fucking superb.. grand intro.. 4/5 | 3 | | Ryuichi Sakamoto Three
A Flower is Not a Flower - fuck yes.. the fantastic strings continue.. sakamoto is always perfect for any sort of meditative cinematic moment, and this one is gold! 5/5 | 4 | | David Sylvian A Victim of Stars
Modern Interior - Sylvian has always done you well in recs to me, and I think partially because you gauge well which of his moments won't overstay their welcome.. this one is no exception.. 4/5 | 5 | | Todd Rundgren Anthology
Wailing Wall - fits very well in the general mood of this neo-new wave gloomer of a film you're building.. however, his voice doesn't hit the same beatific lows Sylvian reaches so casually.. the doo-wop/gospel back vox were the best aspect of this.. 3/5 | 6 | | Dennis Wilson Pacific Ocean Blue
Cocktails - there's so much soul in this whole album.. truly, the best thing that came out of the Beach Boys.. and that dense, morbid organ that holds it all together.. i'd have a drink in a smoky bar to this song, and feel like i'm straddling the edge of the universe.. 5/5 | 7 | | Anthony Phillips Wise After the Event
Regrets - This was working for me, the docks, the self-pity, the mood.. but the end got a tad too funeral cabaret.. 3.5/5 | 8 | | David Ackles American Gothic
Love's Enough - ah, i fucking love this sort of dusty, enormously, impossibly sad Americana.. perfect tune for catharsis or even going to the grocer's, as far as i'm concerned.. 4.5/5 | 9 | | Phil Ochs Pleasures of the Harbor
Cross My Heart - first song to veer into something slightly different, but it works with the cue of reaching something of a resolution, if only in the sense that it's ending.. still, this song almost mooged itself to an early grave.. 3.5/5 | 10 | | Chet Baker Chet Baker Sings
It's Always You - is there a classier way to end a prolonged stretch of doubt than one of the most tragic and self-unrealized talents in history? i don't think so.. 5/5
Total compilation score - 37.5 + 4/5 for sustained mood = 41.5/50 = 83/100 | 11 | | Coil Love's Secret Domain
Ars 11-19
Teenage Lightning 2 - Grand fucking opening to what you're setting up to be a cyber-punk-esque film.. song is both tribal and strangely metallic.. works well.. 4/5 | 12 | | Gary Numan The Pleasure Principle
Metal - I like the juxtaposition of the two themes you guys gave me.. Fripp doing minimalist meditations on mood (Terrence Malick meets Truffaut), and you going for nightmarish, but slitghly kitschy sci-fi.. 3.5/5 | 13 | | Bruce Haack The Electric Lucifer
Electric to Me Turn - i fucking love this sort of thing.. so goddamn bad.. so good! 4/5 | 14 | | Vampire Rodents Lullaby Land
Dogchild - grand fucking tune, and you're hitting mood marks and your movie's cues out of the park.. 4.5/5 | 15 | | Fever Ray Fever Ray
If I Had a Heart - not many things out there that cannot be improved by this tune.. 5/5 | 16 | | Royksopp Melody A.M.
Sparks - I like the switch up, going softer for that brief period of relief for the characters.. the song, i'm not so sure about.. 3/5 | 17 | | Goldfrapp The Singles
Strict Machine - Again, the cue is hit perfectly.. but the song didn't do much for me at all.. 2.5/5 | 18 | | The Knife Shaking the Habitual
Networking - yes, yes yes! 4/5 | 19 | | Silver Apples Contact
You and I - Honestly, setting up such an unsettled song to your happy ending worked beautifully.. 5/5
Total compilation score - 35.5 + 5/5 for sustained mood = 40.5/50 = 81/100 | 20 | | The Pop Group Y
A fantastic last round, and a close one too.. Ars, you kicked it off stronger than Fripp, but that middle sag of two songs dropped it, sorry man.. Some amazing songs in this one that are going straight into my constant rotation and onto some of my own mood playlists, so thank you both.. Tune in next year, where we'll see if anyone will dethrone Fripp, who has pulled a second straight win by the skin of his teeth!
Fripp - 83 (WINNER)
Ars - 81 | |

09.25.18 | going from the template we used last year, this nine piece soundtrack is a bit more loosely composed although with a consistent theme of regret, love and the suffering of others.
"World" - meant as the mood setter, a urgent sense of melancholy dominates what is supposed to be introduction to our film, which is more of a cold open rather than being eased in with credits and the like. Our lead is out in the cold streets, breath hovering above in light puffs of steam, face red and cold to the touch. There is something amiss that we do not know of.
"A Flower is Not a Flower" - whether our lead is wallowing in their sorrow or yearning for something more, we are unaware. A passion that overwhelms yet causes this person great distress. A wintry landscape outside the apartment window, snow gently falling beneath yellow-lit streetlights and faint boot tracks on the sidewalk. Our lead walks out the door and walks into the white streets and reflects on what was.
"Modern Interior" - Our lead now wanders to a lonely theatre, slowly disused but still running. Black and white newsreels run, discomforting imagery of war and horror reign supreme. The warmth of the theatre is growing stronger. Our lead grows weary, wondering of the suffering of others in the world - why must they experience such pain, such atrocities, such unfathomable treatment. A sense of disgust prompts our lead to exit the theatre.
"Wailing Wall" - This disgust deep inside the lead turns to self-pity, their thoughts constantly returning to people they once knew, whether they were better off or not than our lead was. Walking further and further, our lead approaches a dead end and can only stare blankly. Nowhere else to go, they turn back. | Frippertronics
09.25.18 | "Cocktails" - Our lead, ever desperate, enters a smoky bar in an alleyway. Orders a drink. And two. Potentially three, then stopped. Something unintelligible is playing on the crackly phonogram in the backroom, the shellac disc having seen better days. The singer sounds like he had experienced a similar pain to which our lead may be experiencing currently. Our lead can only listen and ponder amidst the presence of strangers not listening and mildly inebriated.
"Regrets" - Our lead approaches the docks and sits. This is where we finally reach the apex of their pitiful self-reflection, the culmination of what is bothering them. There is an intense regret inside this person, and redemption, to them, is not possible. Condemned to life of hopelessness and worthless dreams.
"Love's Enough" - Part one of what is intended to be our lead's catharsis, the shedding of their former self.
"Cross My Heart" - Part two, our lead reaches a conclusion. Unsure of their own ability to love another person, let alone themselves, they urgently try to convince themself of a better future, even if it doesn't turn out as expected. They don't know what awaits them.
"It's Always You" - Our lead returns home, the lamp lit and the furniture left as it once was when they left that evening. A record sits on the armchair. Our lead picks it up and puts it on. And plays on. /end. | Frippertronics
09.25.18 | hey sup I wrote a wildly incoherent guide to this concept, if some bits are a wee bit "theatrical" sounding (see: strings, arrangments, etc.) then...uh... that's how it's gonna be (you did ask for a soundtrack to a movie after all)

09.25.18 | going to start listening now, but it'll take me a few days to let it all settle.. hang onto your pantaloons.. | butcherboy
09.25.18 | oh, and Ars, since it's a playlist, i'm willing to take a few tunes i've heard before for mood cohesiveness, but i know six songs out of nine off yours.. PJ harvey, doors, tom waits, ccr all gotta goooooo!!! latter day soundgarden will not win you this tourney.. | bgillesp
09.25.18 | Bet these will be great. Makes ya nostalgic huh Fripp? Haha, I kid, but seriously if you did want to start back up w/ RR Papi and I would be down in a heartbeat | Frippertronics
09.25.18 | I have been procrastinating hard with the one I have going rn, which I certainly do need to finish and will soon enough. I'd be open to reviving ours this fall when the time is right. | ArsMoriendi
09.25.18 | Ugh I’ll try again later tonight | ArsMoriendi
09.26.18 | Hold on. | ArsMoriendi
09.26.18 | Act I: Creation
"Teenage Lightning 2" The title card plays as we're taken to a network of wires and cogs. It zooms in at a lab for artificial intelligence. There, a wild eyed, but innocent scientist is putting together what look like a humanoid android. He's proud of his work, for the android is more realistic than any in the past. It may not pass the uncanny valley, but it's the closest humanity has gotten and he's excited. It speaks, it's elegant and kind and mimics human empathy perfectly.
"Metal" Self awareness sets in as the robot, now named Adam, is raised by the scientist Dr. Joshua Godrick. He's taught about science, history, language, human psychology, all of the things that will help him integrate into society, and most importantly: about love. He is also told he must do his best to disguise his status as an android and that he'll need further modifications to look more human.
"Electric to Me Turn" Adam is excited! Only 5 more days until he can interact with people outside of the laboratory! He wants to find friends, a love, and have first hand experience with those "dogs" his creator had mentioned. His curiosity is overwhelming. | ArsMoriendi
09.26.18 | Act II:
“Dogchild” Adam is finally out in the real world and he craves human connection. He soon discovers that strangers on the street aren’t as kind as Dr. Godrick or his colleagues; they’d rather keep to themselves. At least that one nasty woman’s puppy was friendly. He enters a jazz bar, knowing that bars are a place for social interaction, but he gets ignored when there. He feels a deep sense of loneliness and sulks. He exits the bar.
“If I Had a Heart” He starts to feel inhuman and less interested in human connection, they don’t want him anyway! He was give the ability to utilize human senses f he wanted and he was incredibly curious about taste, so he enters an Italian restaurant. When there, he seems a woman also sulking, so he tries being social again and asks her what’s wrong. She was stood up and Adam shows compassion. They decide to have dinner together. Her name is Bethany.
“Sparks” The date is going well and Adam isn’t like other men. He’s unselfish and intently listens to what she says. Bethany decides to open up to him and the dates goes well. Time lapses over months, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th dates are brushed past. Eventually they decide to get an apartment together. That was their first mistake… he has no public records as a human.
| ArsMoriendi
09.26.18 | Act III: The Great Escape
"Strict Machine" He never told her he was an android, but now the government is out trying to find him and dismantle him and study him to make more in his image that will follow their orders. She decides to hide with him, run away with him. She doesn't care if he's an android, he's the best thing that ever happened to her! Better than all of the selfish humans. He cares about her more than himself! They're running and so far it's easier to escape than they thought. Adam can use his programming to find the easiest routes out of town, to steal a car, and maneuver it safely, but quickly! He's inhuman, but only in the good ways. This will be easy they both think.
"Networking" All is going well with their escape until a radio broadcast announces that the government has kidnapped Dr. Godrick and are threatening to kill him if Adam doesn't give himself up. Adam's android heart is broken, Dr. Godrick isn't just his creator, he's his father. He needs to pull off a rescue and Bethany wants to help. Adam says he must do it alone since it's too dangerous of a mission for a an unarmed human. She reluctantly agrees and Adam breaks into the facility. He gets all the way to the holding room only to find it's a trap! But what, he's far stronger than the humans and has a backup system for his brain, these humans and their guns have no physical power over him, only emotional power! He breaks free and shields the Dr. as gunfire rains down upon him. One managed to hit the Dr. anyway in a fatal part of his body. "Go on live your life, don't worry about me, I already achieved my dream of creating life. I created you."
"You and I" He escapes the facility and finds Bethany and they find a village in Ukraine with fake ID's Adam manufactured. Adam decides to be a carpenter and Bethany teaches chorus at another school. They adopt a baby boy and live happily ever after. | ArsMoriendi
