Ranking 2018 hip hop albums I've heard
Pretty self-explanatory, still need to listen to Electricity is on our side |
10 | | Drake Scorpion
Ass. The fake woke persona he plays is almost insulting. The redundant beats are ass, and Ratchet Happy Birthday is one of the worst songs of the year.
3/10 |
9 | | Eminem Kamikaze
Imagine being in your forties and making a diss album after people were mean to your astoundingly terrible album.
That's pretty much what this is. Em was vital to the growth of the genre, but hip hop has evolved past attacking low hanging fruit and sacrificing good writing for shock.
The album isn't without good moments and sentiments, and is certainly better than Revival.
That being said, Venom might be his worst song.

8 | | Travis Scott Astroworld
Not a big fan of trap, so the supposedly best trap record of the year didn't stick with me at all. Not bad, just not my taste.
4.5/10 |
7 | | Sen Morimoto Cannonball!
At times, the chill atmosphere can put you into a lull, but this is great jazz rap form a talented rapper.
7/10 |
6 | | Pusha T DAYTONA
Great first impressions didn't hold up, but Pusha's flow is awesome and the beats are long-lasting. If You Know You Know kicks it off with swagger, but weak lyrics on Hard Piano (the janitor line IS terrible and deserves all the hate it gets) is merely an example of shortcomings.
7.5/10 |
5 | | Kanye West ye
Kanye's an asshole, but he makes some great music. Right from the get-go with the opener "I Thought About Killing You" Kanye introduces us to his darkest side. He doesn't hold back with his mental health struggles and dark thoughts that most with these issues have. He still says questionable things (arguably sexist content on All Mine) but it's honest and brave and art for art's sake. Hopefully, Yandhi builds upon this.
7.5/10 |
4 | | Nostrum Grocers Nostrum Grocers
Always gotta love an album with an outlandish track title "Circumcision is the first betrayal" and a Count Dooku reference
8/10 |
3 | | Brockhampton Iridescence
Wasn't too big of the saturations. But Iridesence downplays the boy band shtick and emphasizes experimentation. New Orleans, Berlin, Where the Cash At and J'Ouvert are outstanding. Though, they still have some missteps like naive lyrics on Tape and the boring Something About Him.
8/10 |
2 | | Noname Room 25
Really groovy, empowering stuff here from the Chicago poet. Her flow is tight and her writing is superb. Solid beats, but it's clear that she's a talented writer
8/10 |
1 | | Kids See Ghosts Kids See Ghosts
The psychedelic venture for Kanye, and revisit for Cudi, works magnificently in an easily digestible, emotionally honest, compelling record.
