05.01.19 | 9 hours without food?
Easy there, Moses. |
budgie
05.01.19 | i tried for a while to do 9 days, longest i went was until the 7th day |
AffableMartyr
05.01.19 | It actually has a lot of health benefits, but 7 days is pretty insane, I'm just going 24 hours
|

05.01.19 | Finally, a list topic I can get behind.
I've done quite a bit of water fasting: mostly for 3 days at a time, longest was for 5 days
I've also done it with chai quite a bit, maybe that doesn't count but it's low-calorie so I think it's a good alternative. |
AffableMartyr
05.01.19 | Never heard of chai, I'm doing it as a system cleanse. Hoping 24 hours is long enough for that, already half way there |
AffableMartyr
05.01.19 | Oh chai tea, yeah I've just had lemon and water |
budgie
05.01.19 | nice sandwich. i've always had black coffee anyway |
AffableMartyr
05.01.19 | Yeah black coffee, lemon and water. Is it worth just going for 24 hours? |
SandwichBubble
05.01.19 | I'll never get used to people calling chai "chai tea"
"chai" already means "tea" damn it
And yeah, a day is fine if you're not used to it. Maybe gradually get up to a longer period over the course of a few weeks if you're trying to cleanse. I dunno what the recommended time is, mine's just a traditional fast I do.
@budgie black coffee's a good one too |
AffableMartyr
05.01.19 | Yeah this is my first time so 24 hours is fine, maybe do a 3 day during a break in school or something |
budgie
05.01.19 | "Is it worth just going for 24 hours?" i mean there are so many reasons to fast. i guess that depends on what your reasons are. it's not like there are any downsides to consider in fasting, though, other than boredom really. a 3 day fast is rough though, at least in my cases the 3rd day is the worst day, and it gets really easy immediately after that threshold. |
SandwichBubble
05.01.19 | I feel that, my work schedule prevents me from doing it as often as I used to. I have time off in May and mid-July so that's when I'll do mine (I usually don't sleep during mine so showing up to work like that is not a good look).
Be safe, and don't operate heavy machinery or drive! Kidding, but still. |
AffableMartyr
05.01.19 | Yeah I heard 2nd and 3rd day is the worst. Id love to go 5 - 7 days for the added benefit of losing some body fat one day |
AffableMartyr
05.01.19 | Yeah I have like 12 days until I go back to clinicals for school so I figured I'd try it out. Maybe next big break I'll go for 3 days. Liking is so far, actually feel more alert already |
AffableMartyr
05.01.19 | It's almost 1am, I'd normally be sleeping by now but I'm not even tired because of this fast. |
SandwichBubble
05.01.19 | That's natural. I dunno your diet, but tons of people probably don't get their proper water intake. Still, that high might not be as strong as you think so still be careful.
Word of warning if you do end up going 3 days, give yourself a day or two to get back into your old routine after a fast.
I would love to go for a full week, but I always always allow 2 days post-fast to get back into my usual diet/sleep schedule and I've never had the luxury of getting over 7 days in a row off of a job.
Check out my podcast: cranky old man talks about fasting too much |
budgie
05.01.19 | haha. and electrolytes help with fatigue after a couple of days. literally lick some rock salt off your palm and it's going to give you a rush of energy. fun stuff |
SandwichBubble
05.01.19 | I usually go for lightly-salted plain yogurt or "glucose biscuits" (I don't know if there's an American term for what I'm talking about). And lots of veggies. |
budgie
05.01.19 | oh to stop your fast? i mean licking salt/potassium off your palm during the fast to keep yourself from depletion. for ending a fast i just have cooked down spinach or arugula, pretty easy way to wake up digestion |
CugnoBrasso
05.01.19 | I remember fasting for two days and than breaking it with a Schwarzwälder cake. Spent the rest of the day on the toilet. |
Demon of the Fall
05.01.19 | I actually thought this meant abstaining from water at first, I was mightily confused and a little concerned. Regardless of that I'm still not sure why people would do this by choice. |
AffableMartyr
05.01.19 | Look up water fast health benefits, there are a lot of reasons. I plan on eating Chinese to break my fast. I don't think it'll affect me too bad considering this was only a 24 hour fast. Hope I'm right? |
Sinternet
05.01.19 | i don't do it as I prefer IF instead, but yes its pretty good for you, just make sure you consult your doctor before doing anything longer than a week because then it can be harmful. And make sure you take enough vitamins + minerals with your water |
budgie
05.01.19 | "I actually thought this meant abstaining from water at first, I was mightily confused and a little concerned. Regardless of that I'm still not sure why people would do this by choice."
so that's a thing, called a "dry fast", and there's a big internet community promoting it, but i'm pretty sure dry fasting is more in the pseudoscience realm of things, lol. water fasting with mineral supplementation isn't that strenuous on your physiology give you don't have some fragile hormonal or cardiovascular issues |
budgie
05.01.19 | "I plan on eating Chinese to break my fast. I don't think it'll affect me too bad considering this was only a 24 hour fast. Hope I'm right?"
i think that's fine, i don't think your intestines even stop with digestion after just 24 hours. |

05.17.19 | Kinda did this unintentionally the past couple days and it felt surprisingly good. Only ate about 1000 calories one day, then less than 500 the next, but since I’m used to over 3000 a day this was very different. Also what I ate was calorically dense so there wasn’t much volume to fill my stomach. Obviously not that close to what y’all did but I can understand it a bit better now |
