The album must have fewer than 30 votes/ratings and cannot be a repeat from the past Prog tourneys (just ask and I should remember). The album must also be readily available through a free, online streaming resource (like youtube, bandcamp or spotify).
HOW TO SUBMIT: Comment with your band and album name and WITH A SHORT DESCRIPTION ON WHY YOU LIKE THE ALBUM. PLEASE POST A LINK TO THE ALBUM STREAM. I will upload the information given on the list to confirm your admission.
General Rules: You must listen to each album at least once before voting. You may vote for your own album when matched up. There will likely be 16 contestants locked into this tournament. By entering, YOU ARE SAYING “I’M GONNA JAM ALL OF THESE AND PARTICIPATE IN VOTING.” Failure to participate may lead to you being kicked out of the contest. "Spectators" can vote as long as they hear both albums, aren't alts, etc.
Schedule: Each discovery (first time, head-to-head) match will last a week long. Should be about nine weeks. I suggest jamming the album multiple times, researching other similar albums, or commenting with your thoughts on the albums. |

Not a lot of people realise that Germany was a cesspool of various genres and their collisions. And every trending genre they took in, they managed to recreate into something truly theirs. In the 70s prog resurgence, Germany fell head first into krautrock and jazz-prog. Amid general hits like Can, Neu! and Eloy (annual followers of Progday tourneys can also recall last year's second place holders Eden) arose a smaller underground spawn of bands. Thrice Mice was one of them. They playfully incorporate sax into their music and write generally happier Pink Floyd-isms. A perfect record for uplifting mood seekers.

Fireballet/ Night on Bald Mountain
I found this vinyl, like I find most of my more obscure stuff, digging through dusty crates in dingy basements in about a 50 mile radius where I live in the midwest. I found this in Lake Geneva Wisconsin at some whole in the wall tourist shop, that had a sign "records" pointing down the stairs. I found this and others but had never heard of this so had to get it for the terrible name alone, I figured they were from England and saw that Ian McDonald produced it so knew it would be at least worth a spin. Well it turns out they were from New Jersey. This has nodes of all the great early Prog bands. You will swear you hear, Genesis, Yes, GG, KC, and Van Der Graff. I love the orchestration although I usually do not. The FIre Mountain that closes out the album is great although in this day and age maybe a little much but a great listen

Tangerine Dream - Firestarter OST
Most of you are probably familiar with the German synthesizer band Tangerine Dream. This soundtrack, from the 1984 film Firestarter (based on the Stephen King novel of the same name) was my first exposure to them. I saw Firestarter in the theater, and while the film was a bit of a mixed bag (primarily because poor little Drew Barrymore was probably too young to do the leading role justice), I fell in love with the hypnotic score, and went out of my way to find the soundtrack album. I'm not usually a lover of all-instrumental albums, but I just find this one to be beautiful. (Which is why I reviewed it on this site a couple of years ago). Even all these years later, this is still my favorite Tangerine Dream LP.

It was recently reissued as a Prefab Sprout album so you'll find it on YT under both PS's label and Paddy's name. It's not strictly prog in the sense of it's structure, but progressive in its ideas, ambition and concept. Plus, I feel obligated to throw a curve-ball in what is usually a rock-dominated competition. |

Unreal City is a relatively new symphonic prog band coming from Italy. Centered around a keyboardist who masterfully uses piano, organ, moog, mellotron - etc - , the man is also a gifted singer. Rhythm section is tight and guitar complements the keys very well. Band revives some of the Italian prog majesty of the 70's. They incorporate all the classic RPI traditions of clever melodies, artful presentation, impeccable delivery and dramatic touches. They are backed by Fabio Zuffanti, who is compared to an Italian version of Steven Wilson, so the group can have immense future appeal. |

A favorite of mine from the Yugo-prog scene that has been in regular rotation for quite some time. Don't see a lot of discussion from this particular part of the world when it comes to either progressive rock or jazz fusion so it would most certainly be a worthwhile addition, I think. Perhaps it's not as long as some of the other additions but it makes for a wonderful listen nonetheless. |

They say you can't judge a book by it's cover, but apparently that doesn't hold true for records. This 2018 release contains the classic 70s inspired prog that you would expect from a cover like that. The production is up to date, but the music is classic (including a seven part, 27 minute long, closing number)... It's a testament to how long Friday's been running this tourney that I find myself rummaging through 2018 releases for obscure prog.

I understand why our hard working friend Friday disallowed it -- there are no outside sources that list it as prog, and those are the rules the contest. But I also understand why Fripp argued that it is -- it definitely has proggy elements. But classification debates aside, it's a beautiful album, well worth a listen as a warmup for the contest. That's why when I'm voting, I'm not worrying about how proggy something is. Embryo - Rocksession
Embryo is a german krautrock musical act known for their distinct brand of jazz-rock music. Of their albums I find this one to be their most sonically interesting. It mainly is a jazz-rock album like their others, but is filled with odd sounds and influences, from marimbas to violins and a bunch of other things I can't identify because I suck at describing music

And like I said above, I wouldn't say that some of the other stuff we've listened to over the years, like Henry Cow, was prog either. If I had to, I'd have classified that as experimental or avant-garde. |

05.10.19 | @Divaman; Prog can be stretched, diluted and can enter in collision with pop, jazz, classical, folk, gothic, celtic, world music, metal, and weirdness a la Henry Cow which belongs to a peculiar prog sub-genre named Rio/Avant-prog. At first glance, it's noise with dissonant instrument here and there, but it carries its own structures, its own identity, just like Kautroch and Zeulh, two other weirdo sub-genres. They are not my favorite styles, but I can find something of my taste in there. i'm open minded enough in prog, my favorite music, but I prefer it when we can find symphonic vibes, Ecclectic passages with odd, clever time signatures, tempo shifting with the presence of strings, keys, synthesizers, flute, saxophones, etc

We are a symphonic prog band from the Netherlands. Our debut album is a mix of prog and power rock/metal which is very bombastic in nature as we use a lot of orchestras and choirs. @Friday: it was mixed and mastered by Matt Smith from Theocracy (I see you have a couple of their albums 5'ed). It's a bit weird to say why I like our own music without blowing my own trumpet to much, but our selling points are an incredible singer (not me haha), diverse and intricate songs, and a very cinematic sound.

Spettri - 2973 La nemica dei ricordi
A band born in the 60s but that only managed to get published in the 2010s. 2973 (published in 2015) is a concept album that begins right after the end of the previous album: unhappy with our society, the protagonist talks with the dead to search for answers but ends up losing his mind; now, in this second album, he sails on a ghostly ship that will bring him closer to his inner self. The music sounds like Black Sabbath doing rpi, with a constant haunted house vibe (complete with sax) throughout and lots of keyboards. The singer isn't very gifted, but definitely fits the Halloween feel.

05.14.19 | After my trip about six days, here I'm here ready to another Friday's prog tourney.
I must confess I was a bit surprised with the date of this tourney. I expected it a bit later. Thus, I didn't have much time to prepare it as I usualy do. Initially, my first choices were three other albums. Still, and as is usual, I like to have a review ready when the moment comes. In two of the cases I didn't have them yet. In the other case I've the review ready but Friday told me that it wasn't possible because it was alredy choosen in another tourney.
So, "Halloween" became to be a second choice. But I'm not regret of it. I love the album, and despite my review about it, it has only 10 votes till now. Thus, somehow, it remains almost an unknow gem on this site, which is a pity since I think it's one of the best French prog albums of the 70's. But don't be afraid, the lyrics are in English. Lol. |

It's very accessible and sophisticated at the same time. i've been hesitating between it an Not A Good Sign, which is a better band, but it's a big beast to tame, and it takes several listens to totally absorb it...
