Spreadsheet:

Rules: Anyone can nominate a song, which will be added to the list and assigned to a day; on that day (in theory) everyone will tune into it and drop their rating and thoughts! Later on, when everyone's had a chance to rec, I'll open up second recs, which should see things through to the end of the month. When you rec, please include SONG NAME, ARTIST, ALBUM and a Yt/Spotify link |

05.31.19 | Do we add stuff to the spreadsheet or just comment with a rec? This has always seemed like a fun idea and I’m gonna try to get into it this time! |

05.31.19 | Just comment with a rec! I'll update the spreadsheet once you've posted here :]
Would be great if y'all could hold off til we're actually in June though lol, so the May list has time and space to close properly (although will obvs add yours Papa!) |

05.31.19 | "Radio Cure" by Wilco
Album: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
My favorite song from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is vocally dry, super slow, and sad. A truly great indie tune.

05.31.19 | Ooooh, "opposites"? That sounds fun as a theme! :]
Then here is my first rec:

Thinking about something slow, sad: this song which came into my mind first. Especially, I love the organ the most, but otherwise the whole ambiance is fantastic. |

05.31.19 | “When We First Met” by Hellogoodbye
Album: Would It Kill You?
Sugary sweet, instrumentally interesting, manic pop music. An upbeat little diddy that’s almost too cute to function, but never becomes nauseating.

05.31.19 | Ayyy a fellow Gemini! Is it okay if I have my rec saved for the 20th (my birthday)?
Red House Painters - "Katy Song" (from Red House Painters I [aka Rollercoaster]) [slowcore]
There are slower and sulkier songs out there, but this is quite possibly the saddest I've ever heard... and one of the most devastatingly beautiful.

06.01.19 | Noradrenaline - Tricot: 3.2
Super clearly fit the theme, but almost too well. Lots of super interesting things that they touched on, but I feel like none of them were expanded on enough. I really enjoyed all of the individual parts, but it didn't come together super cohesively for me. |
SlothcoreSam
06.02.19 | 1. Noradrenaline. 4.2 Bass line is groovy, mathy guitars are not overpowering or show-offy like some US bands. Drumming adds urgency and agst to the chorus. Vocals are good too. All round banger of a tune. Good start to the month.

ArsMoriendi
06.02.19 | "Noradrenaline"
Well, this is upbeat and the bass is nice enough. No complaints, this is good, but far from amazing.
3.6/5
"In Maidjan"
Tribal growling? This is actually super unique. A bit repetitive though. I feel like I'd like this more if it were like 4 minutes. 12 is a bit much for this little to be going on.

06.02.19 | Noradrenaline - this was kinda good, but wasn't so extra for me. 2.6
In Maidjan - I'm from Hungary. The love for our history is very strong here, and the rediscovery our pagan past is very popular these days. I've heard lots of great noname bands playing such ancient, tribal, shamanism-based music - and next to those, this is awful. 1.9 |

Super unique and engaging, but it doesn’t just rely on being a gimmick. A little overly long though and lost my interest towards the end. |

06.03.19 | Ezra Furman - "No Place" (from Transangelic Exodus)
Pretty sure this is the definition of "manic zany ADHD vibes" plus this is the song that TØP wish they could write

ArsMoriendi
06.03.19 | "Gemini"
His voice is gross. The guitar is decent though and the drums are fine. Ugh, that screaming. It's like whiny hard rock emo idk. Not my thing. This isn't zany or slow hmmm.
2.3/5 |
dmathias52
06.03.19 | "Gemini" - 3.6
Admittedly, I'm biased since I just saw these guys put on an amazing live show with mewithoutYou a couple weeks ago. That being said, I still love the vocal performance and the culmination of this song. |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.03.19 | In Maidjan - 3.0
Similar feelings to Ars on this; I found it engaging up to a point and definitely enjoyed it more than I expected, but it overstayed its welcome
Gemini - 2.9
I only know Cursive from Vitriola, and this is definitely a lot more bubbly. Full points for nominal and stylistic adherence to the theme, but I wasn't exactly swept away by this. The lurching prog-esque rhythms don't suit the band so well imo. |
garas
06.04.19 | Ugly - I'm allergic to this vocal style, but I oddly enjoyed this song. 3.3 |
dmathias52
06.04.19 | Ugly - 4.0
Dig the atmosphere of this a whole lot. Soothing and melancholic. |
Egarran
06.04.19 | Tricot - Nice. Sounds like something from a quirky teen movie. 3/5
In Maidjan - Yeah so I love this. Also she's definitely my type of woman. Watch the entire show, it's quite trance-inducing. Garas, hit us with superior examples of shamanism. 5/5
Gemini - +0.5 for song length. This is just kinda weird. 3/5
Ugly - Damn, 1 second away from a +0.5 for song length. I was mostly bored 2.5/5 |

06.04.19 | Here's one, but it's not that good what I meant (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnboCHR4XrA)
You can find good ancient/pagan music in historical festivals. Like there's a "Castle Festival" in Gyula, where I've heard many good ones, but those are just "traditionalist activists" or so - so no big stage or possibilty to get their music on CD... If I can find a good one online, I'll let you know. |
Egarran
06.04.19 | Thanks! Now you have to take me to a historical festival when one of us gets rich. |

06.06.19 | "Ugly"
I don't like the autotune here... at all, but at least it's far less abrasive than sach's typical recs. The background music is actually fairly pleasant and dream poppy too. Maybe I'm being generous because it's way better than his typical rec. -.1 because come on man, those vocals.

06.08.19 | Ugly- 2.2. Not feeling this at all. Elevator music in a newly built high rise apartment in a gentrified district.
Radio Cure- 2.6. Nup, can't get into this either.
Outro- 2.7. Repetitive, but OK. Needs visual effects, or use it as a soundtrack to a movie.
When we first met- 3.1 Finally a song. This one reminds me of an advertisement. Has that catchy pop jingle that works for summer ads, dancing around in bright bikinis, with big smiles and water splashing.

06.09.19 | When We First Met - well, nothing much to remember about that song. 2.4 or 2.5, I don't know.
Stilettos - Loved it. Reminded me to my beloved soundtrack of a toycar-racing video game, Re-Volt. 4.4
Manta Ray - not big fan of the vocals, but otherwise it's a cool song. 2.8 |

06.09.19 | Cursive - Gemini: it ain't Cursive, if it don't slam my ears like a powerdrill. 3
Organ Tapes - Ugly: for once we have a sach rec that isn't godawful, just a little boring. 2.5
Wilco - Radio Cure: this really walks the razorthin line between melancholic music and Phil Elverum-like lack of music altogether. it really ony picks up in the last quarter. 3
Keys of Orthanc - Outro: I think this is dungeon synth. is this dungeon synth? if it is, then it is way too uneventful to be the dungeon synth type that I like. 2.5
Hellogoodybe - When We First Met: it's cute, too bad I'm not a 12 year old girl. 2
Holy Fuck - Stilettos: I have to say, it's a bit of a waste of band name. 3.5
Pixies - Manta Ray: aren't I a dick lately, but then again, I don't really like Pixies. they strike as a likeable band, but their stuff, as exemplified by this song, is too non-descript and repetitive. 2.5 |
Papa Universe
06.09.19 | Tricot - Noradrenaline: not as annoying as I feared it would be. 3 |
Egarran
06.09.19 | Trifo, how about 'Daddy Cosmos'? That has a nice ring to it. |
Trifolium
06.09.19 | Hahaha! I'll give it a try when you least expect it, let's see how it plays out. |
garas
06.09.19 | Yes it is dungeon synth - BUT: a borderline between that and what's called dungeon drone - I guess that's why you found it uneventful.
I have an unappeasable desire for both genres, but I was aware that's not going to be this month's top. |
ArsMoriendi
06.09.19 | "Outro"
So far this sounds like creepy Dracula music. The organ is okay and that's viola, isn't it? Too high to be a cello, unless only the A string is being played. Low violin maybe? Wait, is this going to go anywhere? Man, this is an outro alright.
2.6/5
"When We First Met"
Ukulele pop? Ugh. Yup, this is generic TV commercial pop rock that even Grandma can enjoy. This song is so short, but it feels endless.
2.4/5
"Stilettos"
Cool percussion so far. Oh shit, the percussion just got even better. Finally something interesting. It's so jittery, I feel like exercising to this one. It keeps layering on new ideas too. I legitimately like this.
4.3/5
"Manta Ray"
You know me, I love Pixies. They're so playful, creative, noisy, and fun. This isn't one of their best songs though. The bass rules and the subject is adorable. Manta Rays haha! Kim's backups make it feel like it belongs on a pre-school cartoon, but in a good way if that makes any sense.
3.9/5 |
Trifolium
06.09.19 | Ars YYEEESSSSSS!! Exactly why I love it too, that percussion is delish. |
Trifolium
06.09.19 | Noradrenaline: nice guitars, vox aren't for me. I've still got issues with hearing Japanese and not seeing anime/weird tv shows in my mind's eye all the time. 2.6
In Maidjan: Cooler than I thought it would be. Very long though, and I don't see myself listening to this a lot if I don't have to. 2.8
Gemini: Totally yucky vox. Plus those synths. Eew. 2.0
Ugly: Hmm, how is this a sach-rec!? Ok, those vocals are a clear indication, but the actual music is kind of ok. 2.3
Radio Cure: I've hear so much about Wilco being amazing/perfect/one of the best and most consistent bands around, but never checked them for some reason. Music is cool, vox don't do a lot for me as of yet. Who knows, that might improve one day. For now, this is a solid 3.2
Outro: Not my genre at all, sorry garas, although all that bm has heightened my tolerance for this kind of music significantly. 2.2
When We First Met: Hahahahaa those lyrics. What is this? I mean, it's also clearly energetic like crazy! And happy and cute. But also a 2.6
Manta Ray: Delish bass, fun track, gets the blood pumping. Love it. Not so much the vocals on some moments (AGAIN! Am I too picky with vox or something?) 3.3
Moon: Y E S! Now we're talking. This thing ruuules. Very nice spacy vibes. I could do with a little less sax on this, it doesn't need it, Also the beginning is better than when it tries to blow up into something else, but it's still a solid 4.0 On my to-listen-to-list for sure!
|
JohnnyoftheWell
06.09.19 | Ugly - Best sachcore so far. Weirdly makes me think of a more electronic version of some Mogwai. Still not a fan of that vox or the drum tones 2.7
Radio Cure - Similar to Trif, feel like I should have checked Wilco ages ago. This was...slightly underwhelming but there's something to it. Not entirely sure if it's clicking - part of me wants to throw it in with the Deerhunter/Women echelon of indie I don't care for, but that chorus still has me intrigued. Going to have to do some digging here. 3.3/5
Outro - Not convinced that this needed to be nearly as long as it is, but it did give me rare flashbacks to when I was way more into this vibe, so for that it can have a 3.3
When We First Met - 10/10 gemini points right here: ditzy sounds, superficial haircuts, deep feelings. This is silly and cute and more than my critical sensibilities care to handle so fuck it, 3.6
Stilettos - BASSLINE yes please! Really ride, enjoyed this a lot. Sounds like a high-octane version of a Supercar's Futurama, which I've been digging big time lately 3.8
Manta Ray - Oh hai there Pixies! Very much business as usual here, but it's as fun as ever 3.5 |
Trifolium
06.09.19 | Yeah that bassline rules Johnny, glad you dig!
I'm going to check Wilco as well, next to those Casualties of Cool. |

06.09.19 | No hard feelings, Trifo ;] As I said, I was aware it's not going to be the top rated one here. Actually, I expected much lower scores.
I started thinking about my second rec~ is it okay if opposes the previous one only in the overall feeling? I mean, the song I was thinking about isn't that crazy/fast, more like midtempo, but pretty happy? |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.09.19 | Yeah, for sure! Doesn't have to be a total opposite, just a mood counterpoint :] |

'Good Times' by The Rolling Stones! (from Out of Our Heads, 1965) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwmFrRO3c3A

Egarran
06.10.19 | Radio Cure - I really wish I loved this band, it was always mentioned along Sparklehorse and Grandaddy when I was into those guys. 3/5

When We First Met - Indeed cute. Not a fan of those vocals though. 2.6

06.10.19 | "Moon"

8. Stillettos, 3.5, nice speedy jam, don't know in what context I'd listen to this again.

06.13.19 | I know what you mean Egarran. I've never ever rec'd some of my all time faves (like How To Measure A Planet from The Gathering) to some of my friends because of this. Totally relatable.

06.13.19 | 10. Moon. 3.7. Groves along nicely to start, then some good sax offending, with harmonic moaning.
11. No place. 3.6. This is aight.
12. Upwey, Tecoma, Belgrave. 4.0. Keza knows his Aussie punk. I own this album on vinyl, and seen Ceres live a couple of times. This ain't my favorite of theirs, but it's still better than most of their new album
13. My impure hair 3.1. Nice enough. Need to listen to more.
14. Perfect Darkness. 3.6, i like his voice, it reminds me of. ...... Milky Chance. |

Big Data - Big Dater
I can hardly think of a perfect opposite to my first song, but it should probably be something you wouldn't expect a fan of Heilung to enjoy. Dense computer electropop!

06.13.19 | Radio Cure - One of my favorite albums and this has always been a middle pack song from it for me, so an easy 3.9
Outro - I’ll be completely honest, just don’t really get this one. But it def fits into theme 2.2
Manta Ray - Generally fun, although I still can’t tell what I think of the vocals for them 3.2
Stilettos - Well that was fun! Not generally my taste, but I can behind it 3.7
Moon - Love everything about this, especially the backhalf. Need to check the album 4.4
No Place - All over the place in a great way. Super engaging 3.7
Upwey, Tecoma, Belgrave - Right up my alley with the pop punk, but ibron’t Think the slowness worked in their favor. 3.1 |
keza
06.14.19 | Love that ceres is getting some appreciation, tho definitely not their best song to start with in hindsight...
@dmathias52 I reckon you'd love their Luck EP and their LP Drag It Down on You, really good emo/pop-punk but a bit diff from what you'd normally hear maybe :) |
Trifolium
06.14.19 | No Place: Delish drums, vocalist needs some getting used to. Especially in the quieter moments. Percussion keeps on being cool though! And it fits the theme very well. 3.6
Upwey, Tecoma, Belgrave: Not too much into this kind of banjoing etc. Maybe would have loved it when in the pub with my fellow 16yo skater friends way back then. Oooh no, especially that angsty teen explosion at the end. 2.2
My Impure Hair: Some interesting things happening here. Love the detailed and layered backdrop of alien sounds. Like you're in a canyon with some extraterrestrials. A little uneventful too. 3.0
Good Times: Happy, carefree, relaxing. Nice opposite to the dungeon synth. Short but sweet. 3.0
Ars Moriendi: Totally weird. Unlistenable too in a way. This is what I always imagine will happen when you wear a bluetooth headphone and walk through a busy city, picking up what others are listening to when you pass them. And there just happen to be many gypsies out and about using bluetooth headphones for some strange reason. 2.8

06.15.19 | "My Impure Hair"
I like this song and I actually already know it. It's very pretty and her voice is so airy and sweet. It's way more layered instrumentally than the stuff on Misery is a Butterfly (which I'm more familiar with.)
4.1/5
"Perfect Darkness"
Some downtempo piano-ey stuff? It's too poppy for my taste. Especially those vocals.

06.15.19 | Well, I guess I became very picky or idk, because I gave lots of 2.3s...
'My Impure Hair' & 'Perfect Darkness' - both are totally not my taste. 2x 2.3
And I'm sorry, but I couldn't wait for listen to Ars's rec: 'Ars Moriendi' could have been something I'd like, but certain parts of the song totally killed it to me. So I had very mixed feeling while listening, so my 2.3 is just an "average" score. Some parts were twice better than this, some parts were like 1.0, so...well. It's hard to rate it. |
ArsMoriendi
06.16.19 | "Good times"
Pretty generic mellow 60s rock song. Mick Jagger often has tons of personality, but it's nowhere here. I wonder if the Sam Cooke original version has better expression? At least the bass is nice.

06.19.19 | "I Lied"
Good bass, but that safe "funky but not TOO funky" guitar line is gross honestly. God those vocals are bland too. This is like adult contemporary soft rock. The good bass can't save this, I'm sorry.
2.4/5
"Future"
Nearly 8 minutes of Paramore? Here goes nothing. So far it's just building up and has a singer/songwriter vibe to it, especially with that acoustic guitar. Here we go, it's peaking at the top of the roller coaster! The acoustic guitar is speeding up and getting louder! Wow, decent climax actually. It's psychedelic and explosive! What the hell? Isn't this supposed to be a shitty pop punk band? Is this the same band that made that awful "Crushcrushcrush" song? It faded out and came back too? Cool choice. I'm genuinely surprised this band could make something good. No, this doesn't mean I'll check the album since "Ain't It Fun" is lame and most of the album clearly is going to sound more like that.
4/5
"Hole In Your Roof"
His voice is soft and kinda weird. Is he Australian? Yeah sounds it. Musically it's pretty plain, but coupled with his voice is stands out somehow. Very indie, not too impressive, but certainly pleasant.

06.20.19 | My Impure Hair - this is quite nice, liking the atmospherics in this otherwise simple track. The vocals are pretty weak though. 3/5
Perfect Darkness - this song is dark and lovely. Must check out more from Fink. 4/5
Stilettos - pretty cool. I don't know if it leaves a super big impression on me or if this style is really my thing though. 3/5
The Hole in Your Head - I haven't heard anything from Augie March since 'One Crowded Hour' was big on Aussie radio, but this song is pretty lovely. 4/5

06.20.19 | 15. Good times, 3.0. Would make a good filler track between two hits. As a standalone song it's OK, just lacking that something special.
16. Ars Moriendi. 4.9. A helter-skelter fusion of styles off one of my all time favourite albums. This brings back so many great memories, thanks Ars.
17. I Lied. 2.8, I'm not really getting into this. To boring and simple.

06.20.19 | Hello Friends
1. noadrenaline - Tricot as usual with Tricot this is fun. I really, really need to listen to an entire album by them eventually here. Procrastination ahoy! 3.7
2. in Maidjun - Heilung Ah shit this one is really long. I was certainly expecting black metal going into this, but it seems more of just traditional tribal music, I appreciate the theatrics in the video so farrrr, I swear I saw either this video or another by them a long time ago. This was fine, I appreciate the idea of this band, but I would need to see it in person with the aid of some substance. 3
3. Gemini - Cursive Cursive rules, whatever guys. 3.5 |

4. Ugly - Organ Tapes - I don't know, maybe because it's Sach and I'm used to garbage, but this isn't too bad. The vocals are just the worst tho, I don't think I'll ever understand that style. 2.4
5. Radio Cure - Wilco - Wilco has always been one of those bands that I could just throw on and let play and time just flies by so quickly, I appreciate it so much, but it means that I could never become very acquainted with the music itself if that makes sense. This song is straight up my alley, it's a really great tune. I love the simplicity of it all. 3.8
6. Outro - Keys of Orthanc - somber, mellow, basic. This is okay. 2.6
7. When We First Met - Hellogoodbye - I was never too much of a fan of the sugary sweet delivery of this brand of indie pop, but it's like, fine. I kinda hate it, but I feel bad for hating it. 2.5

Egarran
06.21.19 | Minus with the positive scores.

06.21.19 | Focusing only on my positive ratings:
"I Lied" - That's a cool song. The mixing is magnicifent: nice and loud bass!!! Sometimes the vocals were a bit weird, but not bad. 3.4
"Big Dater" - I really liked this song. Reminded my a lot to my good ol' favourite 'The Noisy Freaks'. The old computer noises are cool. 3.7 |
Minushuman24
06.21.19 | As all things should be.
8. stilettos - Holy Fuck - oh shit, it's like a roller coaster already. Not a huge fan of electronic music, but this was relentless, it was pretty great. 3.6
9. Manta Ray - Pixies - I've actually never spent much time with the Pixies b-sides, even though I love them. This is such a typical song from them, which is far from being a bad thing. 3.6
10. Moon - Casualties of Cool - I like this far more than any of his metal focused stuff that I've heard. Far more. Serious Great Gig vibes near the end 4
11. No Place - Ezra Furman - One minute in. Love this. The description is very apt, this feels like an anthem for a manic episode. 4.1
12. Upwey, Tecoma, Blegrave - Ceres - I thought this was a hardcore band for a hot second. I've spent most the song trying to remember who I got this confused with... CERCE, I thought this was going to be Cerce and I'm very disappointed, sorry. This was a fine alt rock tune, it didn't stick out to me too much. I have a feeling I'd need to listen to the entire album before I can begin to actually appreciate it. 2.9
13. My Impure Hair - Blonde Redhead - Nice and dreamy 3.3
14. Perfect Darkness - Fink - I really do not like his voice. This strikes me as fuckboi-core. That being said it's not baaaaad, it's fine, just fine. and long. 2.8
15. Good Times - The Rolling Stones - Oh wow I was really not expecting a Sam Cooke cover, made me do a double take. The original is an absolute classic by one of the greatest voices of his generation. The Rolling Stones' cover lacks the same kind of magic and passion for me. Everything feels muted and more somber, but that could enhance a more dreamy state of mind. It has it's place on a summer playlist as a filler song that does it's job well. 2.9
I'll catch back up more probably tomorrow, I've gotta get ready to go to see Arms Aloft. Slowly but steadily catching up.

06.24.19 | Update underway!
Moon - Casualties of Cool Oh yessss wasn't sold on this to begin with, but its progression is seamless and that sax solo is pure bliss. 4.1
No Place - Ezra Furman Hmm full points for fitting the theme, this has a lot of energy and a subtly restrained performance but I'm not quite connecting with it 3.4
Upwey, Tecoma, Blegrave - Ceres: In two minds here. I liked the passion and nostalgia but didn't find this all that distinctive 3.3
Perfect Darkness - Fink: Was on board with this to begin with, but the atmosphere and crisp guitar tone weren't enough to last it six minutes of minimal progression. Not in love with the vocals but not a hater either 2.9
Good Times - The Rolling Stones: Aww c'mon guys, this is a lovely slice of chilled out rock n roll. Made me smile, anyway 3.7
Ars Moriendi - Mr. Bungle: Legendary album, but this track has never been one of my favourites. Definitely fun and I'm glad they went for something batshit just before Pink Cigarette, but compared to the fantasticness of The Air Confitioned Nightmare, it feels like a bit of a mess. Disco Volante and most Secret Chiefs 3 albums did this sound better, sorry Ars :[ still a solid 3.5
I Lied - Spain: The sleaze and manipulation here are speaking to me way more than they should. Enjoyed this one quite a bit, but it's a little overlong 3.4
Future - Paramore: An 8-minute Paramore song that Ars gave a 4.0?! Okay. Intrigued. Huge post-rock climax comes out of nowhere and while I like the verses before it, they didn't feel like they warranted a payoff that huge and abrupt. But wait, there's more? Segued into by...silence. Hmm. Heavy instrumental part 2, feels kinda pointless transitioning in this way, but there's a good motif here so I'll forgive it. Guessing Ars like the noise (and hey, Crushcrushcrush>>this!) 3.3
Hole In Your Roof - Augie March: Liked the one. Little bit safe; there was a guitar break around the halfway mark that made me think this would turn into a listenable version of Public Strain, but then it settled for reined-in catharsiscore. Oh well. 3.5
Katy Song - Red House Painters: Masterpiece. Got into this during a very, very low phase a couple of years ago, but as far as sad indie songs go this is top tier. 4.7 |
garas
06.24.19 | Continously focusing on the songs I (kinda) liked:
"RedBoots" - that was a nice, energic song, I kinda liked it. 3.2
"Wolfman" - well, honestly the song in the beginning was awful, but it builds up nicely. And...ah fuck, she's not a good singer, the lack of confidience in her own voice is a huge minus, and she should focus on the higher notes. But I get it why is it so unique, so I'll give a 2.6 to this one. |

Mr. Bungle - Ars Moriendi: one of the better cuts on the album. delightfully all-over-the-place. 4
Spain - I Lied: is this some of that boring sophistipop Doof is into? 2.5
Paramore - Future: pretty much as boring a post-rock tune a band as usually boing as Paramore could have ever come up with. 1.5
Augie March - The Hole In Your Roof: I really don't like this grung-y early 00s production. makes it sound like the whole is perpetually tired of what they're playing. 2.5
Red House Painters - Katy Song: Mark Kozelek writes songs that are too long. that seems to be his whole gimmick, that he doesn't know when to stop. but out of all of his dragged out messes, this is probably the more tolerable one. 3
Sianvar - BedRoots: I remember hating this record, when it came out, but the problem with bands like Siavar is that when you hear the songs individually they actually sound impressive, but put them on one full-length record and it turns into faceless, repetitive mess that bores to tears. so this is pretty good, but I revisited the album and in that context it barely stands out and actually just drowns in the general chaotic nature of the band. the song by itself tho: 4
HUM - Stars: it's alright, but my god the guy can't sing for shit. 3
Claire Cronin - Wolfman: the budgie effect, but her vocals are just off-putting sometimes. 3.5 |

06.24.19 | Katy Song. 3.2. This song is pleasant, but that outro is hypnotizing and long, almost put me to sleep.
Big dater. 3.0, starts off like brostep in slow motion, then 80s synth-pop, then back to slow brostep.
Bedroots. 4.2, I listened to this when it came out, but forgot all about it since then. It's kinda like a sputnik dreamed up supergroup. Great song.
Stars- 4.0, oh it's this song. A heavier Weezer, bit repetitive, and vocals are a bit week, but as a song it rocks.

1.7/5
"Stars"
I know this song! Maybe I should get into them, they're like post-hardcore Smashing Pumpkins in a lot of ways from the songs I've heard. Good guitar honestly and wow is this 90s. I feel like it couldn't have existed in any other decade. Even the lyricism is very Billy Corgan, albeit more simplistic.

A thrash/prog duet, an aquired taste to say the least. |

06.27.19 | Budgie doesn't usually participate here.
Concerning participation: I swear on my leaves, petals, stamens and roots that I'll catch up this weekend. Promise. |

06.27.19 | Oh, NYC is still a week and a half away, but thank you! I'll keep those in mind
16. Ars Moriendi - Mr. Bungle - Wacky. The beginning reminded me of Diablo 2, don't know why. 3.4
17. I Lied - Spain - I really enjoy the instrumentals on this, as simple as they are. It carries such a nice tone, but I am not digging the vocal melody nor his voice. I was really hoping for it to transform into something great near the end, unfortunately that never came to be. 2.4
18. Future - Paramore - I don't remember this one, but I remember only liking Anklebiters from this album so we will see. Yeah I don't remember this, but it's cooool. 3
19. Hole in Your Roof - Augie March - This feels very 90's indie rock. This was a lovely little journey. 3.6
20. Katy Song - Red House Painters - This is already better than anything else I've heard from Mark Kozelek. By far in fact, this is really, really great. I kinda love it, I'll have to check this album out. 4
21. Big Dater - Big Data- I feel this, it feels like something I'd be super into at a club. 3.4
22. Bedroots - Sianvar - What in the name of Blue Swan is this. I enjoy DGD and Stolas, and protest the hero and whatever, but the biggest problem with every one of these bands is the vocals for me. They're either amazing, or grating as all hell. These are grating to me, far too smooth sounding for my tastes. |

06.27.19 | reminded you of diablo 2? i've got to check that track out and see what's up. diablo 2 OST is magical stuff |
Minushuman24
06.27.19 | Oh I should mention, It totally doesn't not sound like the Diablo 2 soundtrack. It just made me think of Act 2 haha. |

06.27.19 | Need another one? for my manic song, I would go with
Sound System - Operation Ivy.

06.28.19 | "Sinai" - that was a fun song! Very exotic and energetic (the album cover is perfect for this) 3.6 |

06.28.19 | I Lied: Laid back, that singer is delishiously almost-off-key/dissonant sounding to make this way more exciting than you'd think at first. Could also help that I heard this on a very warm night, whilst very tired. Great for that mood. Solo's cool too. 3.7
Future: Slow build, that climax sounds greeaat and makes the earlier part cooler too, how the hell does that work? Again, loved it way more than I expected at first. 3.7
Hole In Your Roof: Drumming is very nice during the opening part, voice is interesting too. Some cool guitar wailing too. Kind of a nice song! 3.4
Time for bedddd |
Egarran
06.28.19 | >Solo's cool too.
Thank you. I really like that solo.
The entire album is very laid back like that, so if you like the vocals def go ahead. |

06.29.19 | Big Dater - Big Data: Oh boy, was not ready for this. Bass and grooves and silly fun lyrics. Verdict: smexy. 3.7
BedRoots - Sianvar: Never enjoyed this guy's vocals at all, although Wake had enough badass riffs to make up for them. This shoots for something more melodic and sophisticated and I am not altogether convinced but I like the dissonance and off-kilter chords in the verse. Same old reliable stuff from Will Swam, but I'm less than blown away with this as a whole. Drums have no punch. 2.8
Stars - Hum: Like these guys a lot! Much more into Downward is Heavenward but this album is neat and the song is one of its best. Good feels, big riffs. Also, "post-hardcore Smashing Pumpkins" is a nice summary from Ars 3.9
[Tourniquet] - Claire Cronin: Budgiecore yay! Not in love with the vibe but the next song on Bandcamp just started and I like this one better. Oh fuck, the song you rec'd was not Tourniquet or What The Night is Thinking if one but track 3, Wolfman! Lol I'm stupid. Well, those two got me in the mood, here goes. This is maybe the most Budgie song not by Mazzy Star I can think of. Selectively dramatic but never overbearing, compelling but slightly lopsided, simple but atmospheric arrangement, that acoustic sound...yup, it's all here. This song plods on a little longer than its mood necessitates I feel, but it kept my attention. Could have done with more of those creepy strings and dissonant chords, but I get that their hauntingness has to be fleeting. Extra .1 for the exhalation at the end 3.7 |

06.29.19 | oh thanks okay |

06.29.19 | Well off again. Have a three hour train ride tomorrow, I will get all of the ones I missed done. It won’t be pretty, but it’ll be done! |

06.29.19 | The Most Unwanted Song - Komar, Melamid and Dave Soldier: Ars are you fucking joking. Christmas shopping at Walmart makes me want to commit arson, apparently (although it did crack me up). Ironically, this song is actually slightly more cohesive than Ars Moriendi, but not nearly as fun. I see what you did there but I liked the Bungle track! Not enjoying this merciless revenge policy. Now, Egarran is a man of firm principles and drastic resolve. I don't always agree with him because he makes me scared of attracting bad karma, but here I'm going to have to grit my teeth and do the right thing and pulling the plug at 8:31. 1
AdrenaLine - indigo jam unit: Listened to Kishi Bashi to detox after that last track but I needn't have bothered. Killer bassline, excellent keys, nice beat. This is never less than awesome, should check more from these guys 4.1
Long Water - Wilson Tanner: Found this in combination with the video absolutely mesmerising. Made me think of a more chilled out Gidge. The song was probably overlong and I might not have been in the mood were it not for those cute fishies, but that was a great experience and gets a solid 3.9 before I have second thoughts...
Al Doum and the Faryds - Sinai: Oh boi, phrygian jungle vibes! Hefty runtime but good stuff. 3.7 |

06.29.19 | Katy Song: This is very average. It kind of picks up with twinkly guitars in the end, but the beginning is a bit too cliché for my taste. Oh and the ending also goes on for ages. Is this the final track on the album? 2.3
Big Dater: This is cute. Reminds me of lots of French electro/disco inspired bands. And Britney Spears for some reason? Maybe the vocal line, haha! 3.0
BedRoots: That vocalist so isn't for me. Yuck. The production isn't either. The music is meh. No, sorry, not my thing. 2.0
Stars: Guitars here are cool, nice and distorted, yet another track that's much cooler than the intro made me think. It's very much teenage music, but it holds up nicely, surprisingly. Woah, am I seriously thinking about a 3.6 here!? Seriously, those guitars warrant that. Delish.
Wolfman: Yes budgie, this is lovely, the vinyl was on my wishlist already. That voice is mesmerizing. Super great how she/they feel that being on key all the time is overrated anyway. Absolutely a 3.8
The Most Unwanted Song: Eeew Ars, why did you do this!? Ahaha, I'm laughing like crazy though. What the hellllll is going on. That explanation makes this understandable and more like a cool idea. You can just hear people on the street saying ''If there's opra singing I'm out'', ''Fucking bagpipes'', ''Like such a like church ogran.'' And of course it has a children's choir. Ok Ars, this is a nightmare but I'm dying from laughter. I've sat through it all now. How the hell do you rate this!? Maybe the most average rank will do? For effort. They've clearly had fun. I'd never listen to this if I wanted to hear something good, but I've had tonnes of fun. 2.5

06.29.19 | Long Water: Nicely introspective. I dig this. Especially because it's going to get 30+ degrees again. Calming. I'd better look up this band/group/musician. 3.7
Sinai: Cool vibes. Also fitting with this heat wave. That sax can get a bit much, but the drumming and the boing-boing (what's that instrument? A mouth harp?) are amazing. 3.3

06.29.19 | The album is brilliant (I did 5.0 that one) so you must check it out. But it's their only ambient album so far (the next one is coming in July, but they changed their sound). But if you interested I can can rec you Andras/Andrew Wilson (aussie DJ, member of the project). He has a great taste in music, and makes super playlists. |

06.30.19 | If it makes you guys feel any better, I only have The Most Unwanted Song 3'd (though it's probably because it comes with The Most Wanted song which is a caricature of radio ballad garbage) |

06.30.19 | I'm grateful you picked it, very happy I know that it exists now |

06.30.19 | "Adrenaline"
Ooh, acoustic bass. Good piano too. I may not listen to many full jazz albums, but in small bites, I really enjoy the style.
3.7/5
"Long Water"
The slow piano and slow guitar make it seem like a buildup so far. There's some sax now, okay. WAIT THE WHOLE THING IS JUST THIS? WHAT? Dinner background music?
3.1/5
"Sinai"
African drums and sax so far? Okay more jazz, but this time it's lively! Jew's harp in there too. This is nice and all, but is kinda more like background music than anything else. Good background music though!
3.4/5 |
ArsMoriendi
06.30.19 | "Eternal Twins"
Creepy intro. Wait, it's growl metal so that makes sense. I hate this.
2/5
"Omake ~ Super Free Pop ~"
Well, this is cutesy. Maybe too much for my taste, but the strings are actually utilized in a really fun way. Weird electronic part, hmm. Did I just enter a club? Whoa, this just kinda weird. +.3 for that crazy ending.
3.6/5 |

06.30.19 | Ah, I shudder to think where I would be without deadlines.
Stars - Oh 90s, your singers were awkward af but we miss those grungey guitars. 3.8/5
Wolfman - I made in brazil ,you voice is so much beautifull i am
loving your song ♡♡ 3.4/5
Yeah I had to go to yt for this.
The Most Unwanted Song - OK that is pretty amazing. This may be your best submission. It's hard to rate, but I subtract 0.5 because there wasn't enough saxophone. 4.5/5
Adrenaline - Dug the bongo and bass combo, but jazz piano? Ew. At one point I thought I was still listening to the above. 2.8/5
Long Water - Very nice. I wanna take a nap now. According to the reactions of the local sea life, they should lower more instruments into the ocean. 3.5/5
Sinai - Oh wow, I was turned off even before the minute mark and there's 9 minutes left. After some delicate fast forwarding, there are definitely good parts on this. 2.3/5
Eternal Twins - Yeah, not bad. Dramatic and epic as only metal can be. I think prog thrash metal was supposed to sound like that. 3.2/5
Sennou - Owww this is so sweet it's nauseating. Like that time I drank some orange drink without noticing it had to be 1:6 with water. 2/5
Have fun next month, guys! I'll lurk. |
SlothcoreSam
06.30.19 | The most unwanted song, 2.1, thank goodness for the slide bar. The should be a time limit on these songs.
Adrenaline, 3.6, prefect Sunday morning music
Long water, 3, peaceful,
Eternal twins, 2.8, vocals put me off.
Sennou, 3.1, cute Lil song |
garas
06.30.19 | Oh, hahaha! Ars & Egarran, I love your reactions to my rec!
So, finally: "Omake ~Super Free Pop~" That was a cute song, I'm surprised how much I dug this. (But, the 4. Naruto opening song is still my most favourite Japanese song.) 3.2 |
Papa Universe
07.02.19 | Komar, Melamid and Dave Soldier - The Most Unwanted Song: a novelty joke song on the level of a novelty joke song. you've achieved what you set out to do, I truly did not want to hear this. 2
indigo jam unit - AdrenaLine: pretty, tuneful jam jazz song, pretty enjoyable. 4
Wilson Tanner - Long Water: music for relaxation... 4
Al Doum and the Faryds - Sinai: ...and the exact opposite of that. 3.5
Depressive Age - Eternal Twins: it's like a parade of all bad vocals one could encounter on a thrash song that in and of itself is a testament to boredom. sorry, not into it. 1.5
Oomori Seiko - Omake ~ Super Free Pop ~: this is so cute, I started puking glitter. 3.5 |
