| Music Strangeness Scale
My scale for rating the strangeness of a given album (from 1-11) using an example for each (though my explanations probably aren't that great). "Strangeness" is basically associated with how far from being accessible a track or band is. | 1 | The Rolling Stones
Some experimentation musically and vocally, but for the most part stays with standard music conventions. i.e. Songs such as Sympathy for the Devil, Can't You Hear Me Knocking | 2 | Billie Eilish
More experimentation both musically and vocally. i.e. Songs such as Bad Guy and Bury a Friend | 3 | Tally Hall
Musical and vocal experimentation across various different genres in bizarre and inventive ways. i.e. Songs such as The Ruler of Everything, The Bidding, and Banana Man | 4 | King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard
More musical and vocal experimentation across various different genres in bizarre and inventive ways, often incorporating often unused conventions. i.e. The heavy usage of 7 time signatures, and micro-tonal tuning | 5 | They Might Be Giants
Incorporation of the previous elements with strange lyrics and sounds. i.e. Songs such as Istanbul, Bird House in Your Soul, Don't Let's Start | 6 | The Flaming Lips
Often conceptual and highly experimental projects and albums which incorporate the previous elements. i.e. Songs such as 7 Skies H3, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1, This Here Giraffe | 7 | Tropical Fuck Storm
Heavy distortion and other "strange" elements are prevalent throughout, along with many of the previous qualities. i.e. Songs such as You Let My Tyres Down, The Future of History, and Chameleon Paint
Miracle Musical is another band that could be put in either this or the next category above. | 8 | Animal Collective
Many strange sounds, vocal, and sound distortions prevalent throughout. Song structure and style does not fully adhere to traditional techniques, and often invents new avenues. Also incorporates elements of the previous. i.e. Songs such as The Purple Bottle, My Girls, Fireworks | 9 | Clarence Clarity
Artist plays largely by their own rules, creates sounds which may be relatively new or unheard of within their respective genre as a major focal point throughout their music. Also incorporates many elements of the previous levels. i.e. Songs such as Those Who Can't Cheat, 1-800-Worship, and Will to Believe | 10 | Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band
Some of the strangest, and most bizarre musical groups. Often go by their own standards, and are hard to define genre-wise, and whose sound is often as erratic and strange as their lyrics. May incorporate some, all, or none of the previous elements. i.e. The album Trout Mask Replica, and songs such as Electricity, Doctor Dark, Ashtray Heart, the band Painkiller | 11 | The Shaggs
There are few words to describe the Shaggs, and nearly no bands that can compare, so much so that I felt the need to give them a tier to themselves. Music (that borders on just slapping instruments) as bizarre as its history (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhtDf82a3pM). i.e. Songs such as My Pal Foot Foot, Philosophy of the World, Who Are Parents? | |

09.13.19 | I like both 5 and 10, and select songs from 1
Fun list, but it gets weirder than The Shaggs probably (Diamanda Galas probably?) | 50iL
09.13.19 | It does get weirder -- I think a bunch of modernist, avant-garde composers would classify weirder than The Shaggs. | ArsMoriendi
09.13.19 | The Shaggs are super strange though
Their album is more boring than fun for me sadly, though there's a handful of good ones on there, good in an outsider music way of course | botulist
09.13.19 | a lot stranger music out there. Most of these ‘unconventional’ tunings and patterns come from avant-jazz anyway | Sinternet
09.13.19 | sound of animals fighting - lover the lord has left us is up there | theYearis1999
09.14.19 | The shaggs album sounds sick. Sounds like krautrock. How can people even hate on it. | GhandhiLion
09.14.19 | Strange to compare the totality of each artists work instead of specific albums. There are some artists here that have only made one album! | GhandhiLion
09.14.19 | "Shaggs Sounds like krautrock" huh | JohnnyoftheWell
04.18.20 | Clarence Clarity is the antipenultimate level of strangeness |
