END OF ANOTHER YEAR ON THIS DOOMED PLANET LIST
All my fave records all thrown into one list. Forget separating live records, EPs, all for the sake of 4 of you dickweeds to see. Here they all are one lovely jumble. On reflection not much electronic this year. Was not feeling too much of anything outside Metal and Hip hop and the usual bits and pieces. Another fine year of music if not a particularly phenomenal one., personally lots of fantastic releases but not many life changers. Thanks for another year of music recs and arguments Sput. You're alright X |
55 | | Lapalux Amnioverse
I love most of his discog but this one took a lot longer to appreciate. I stuck with it and its growing with every listen. |
54 | | This Gift Is A Curse A Throne of Ash
An absolute rampage of borderline black metal, HxC, sludge. Unrelenting. |
53 | | Profetus The Sadness Of Time Passing
Another stellar Funeral doom album. Three on this list which are all close to perfect FD doom records. |
52 | | John Zorn The Hierophant
A Zorn Jazz record inspired by the allegorical tradition of the Tarot. The mighty Trevor Dunn on bass, Marsella and Wollesen. The improv sections are insane. |
51 | | Big|Brave A Gaze Among Them
Canada's drone rock 2 piece new record feels slightly more accessible without changing much. I do get how people can dislike this band but I find them utterly enchanting. |
50 | | Hath Of Rot And Ruin
I don't listen to much death metal like this it's kind of 'clean' for me but I've been rec'd it so many times and Its great fun. |
49 | | Pharmakon Devour
The noise queen. I'm no expert on noise. There is only a few artist I find interesting and she always peaks mine. Fierce as always. |
48 | | Mike Patton and Jean-Claude Vannier Corpse Flower
It's Patton. He could literally use a dictaphone on the toilet for an hour and it would make my top 50. I wont apologise. |
47 | | Coilguns Watchwinders
They could have become Breach 2.0 (kinda) After 'Millenials' but they have developed their own sound now and I am glad about that. A tour de force live also. |
46 | | Slow (BE) VI – Dantalion
Another huge funeral doom record. On a par with their last for me. Great band putting out consistently great Funeral doom. |
45 | | Benny The Butcher The Plugs I Met
Not his best but I have still found I listened to it loads. The grimey stuff he does is where its at with all of Griselda for me. Hoping that Griselda record is full of it I just haven't had the time to listen yet no doubt it will be but their gully, grimy shit is such a throwback right now and all of them barely miss a step. |
44 | | ANKHLEJOHN A Cold World
Took longer to click with to me than previous efforts and especially the Big Ghost collabs. His voice isn't for everyone but the beats from Vinyl Villain on this are great as always and AJ is legit af. |
43 | | Sunn O))) Life Metal
Saw Sunn O))) for the first time this year finally. It was incredible and has made me appreciate them much more. Still rarely listen on record but 'Life Metal' the first since 'Monoliths..' that I can do that on a few occasions. |
42 | | Mach-Hommy and DJ Muggs Tuez-Les Tous
One of two DJ Muggs production records on here. Released early this year ,this has been a constant throughout it. They released another together recently which is better according to a friend but yet to check it. Enjoyed this more than Machs album too. All hail 2019 Muggs. |
41 | | Pound (USA-WA) ..
Mental. A nine string baritone and a dude who switches Drum kits on a 90 degree angle mid set. part grind, part Djent, part Jazz, all nuts. |
40 | | Primitive Man / Hell (USA) Split
Two of the heaviest bands on the planet. The Primitive Man tracks especially are devastating. Takes something to out devastate Hell. |
39 | | Rorcal Muladona
I am a newcomer to these guys. Heard the odd track but this blew me away. Would probably eventually be higher only Iv'e hear it just twice so had to put it in. Looking forward to getting really into it though. |
38 | | Friendship (JPN) Undercurrent
Japan HxC. My fave harcore release of the limited hardcore I listen nowadays. |
37 | | Vukari Aevum
Tremendous post, atmospheric black metal. Some really, really good tracks and no bores. I feel like I am doing a massive disservice having this in the 30's. |
36 | | Clever Austin Pareidolia
Hiatus Kaiyote drummer's debut. Initaily thought it was a beat tape but it much more. All them guys are so talented. I met him at a show recently and was HAMMERED on Gin and completely blacked out. Nice dude though. Remember that much. |
35 | | Abigail Williams Walk Beyond The Dark
Never listened to this band before which I am shocked at considering their back catalogue. Was throughly impressed. A fabulous album. Will dig into their past after NY. |
34 | | Nihilsect Verge Of Collapse
Really great crusty black metal EP from Greece. Don't know where I cam across this but so glad I did. Like a black metal Tragedy. |
33 | | A-Sun Amissa For Burdened and Bright Light
A great multi insrtumental 2 piece from the UK. I'd say ambient bordering on dark ambient but it sells them short. A lot of post rock in their sound. A lot of layered tracks. Great song writers. Always really interesting releases. And another great one by them. |
32 | | Deathprod Occulting Disk
He's back. 15 years. I didn't even know about this until recently. It is no 'Moral and Dogma' How could it be? But it's different. Its a 2020 Deathprod. I will grow to love this much more, I am sure. Good to have him back. |
31 | | Body Void You Will Know The Fear You Forced Upon Us
Ridiculously heavy doom/sludge release again from these 3 guys. Really liked the album from last year this carries that on and digs deeper and deeper. Absolutely huge. |
30 | | Elder (USA-MA) The Gold and Silver Sessions
Chilled out Elder. Feels like an in between albums session and turns out to be absolutely stellar. |
29 | | Abyssal A Beacon In The Husk
Dark, dissonant, murky death metal. Abyssals comeback is pretty relentless. Saw them live last week and were hugely disappointing which was double kick in the guts because 'A beacon...' is top shelf Abyssal. |
28 | | Torpor (UK) Rhetoric of the Image
UK's Sludge kings debut worth the wait. Hopefully they will make a name for themselves off this as they have been a really solid band for a while around the UK now. |
27 | | False Portent
A classic case of getting better with repeated listens. Passed this off as run-of-the-mill, late 2000 ,black metal with mandatory Lewandanski artwork but I have found more to like the more I listen to this. |
26 | | Skaphe and Wormlust Kosmískur Hryllingur
A perfect amalgamation of the experimental/Psych side of the Icelandic black metal scene. |
25 | | Schammasch Hearts of No Light
This is a trip. Schammasch are reaching out again. Trying different things. Fair play to them Theyve got balls. Its not perfect but most of it is damn good avant garde (black?) metal. 'A paradigm of beauty' is truly horrendous though. |
24 | | Blood Incantation Hidden History of the Human Race
Best death metal of the year. Sci-fi laced death metal is always a winner. |
23 | | Inter Arma Sulphur English
They sound more and more like a sludge Morbid Angel. Not as good as previous but as always, a solid, solid album. Still fantastic live as well. |
22 | | Cave In Final Transmission
R.I.P Caleb X A fond farewell. The 'unfinished' feel to it despite these tracks being basically done before the tragedy just adds to the poignancy of the record. It is hard to shake but these are great Cave In songs. |
21 | | 11Paranoias Asterismal
Members of Blown out,Bong playing HEAVY riff laden, crushing, stoner doom with a massive dose of the Psych. Crazy how still unknown they are considering they've been around so long and used to contain members of Ramsess and Bong (still do I think) |
20 | | Wishfield Wishfield
Emo, grunge, indie rock and black metal!?! Shocking. I Should hate it. Actually LOVE it. Fretless guitar and bass. Something different and hugely enjoyable if you stick with it. |
19 | | Several Wives Göldi Fell
Incredibly chilling and haunting dark ambient from the UK. Deeply layered and beautifully composed experimental drone. Gets to your bones. |
18 | | Crimeapple Medallo
Dj Muggs and New Jerseys Crimeapple. A match made in heaven. Crimeapples last album is worth checking unless you're a racist and don't like Latino MC's. That can be the ONLY reason. |
17 | | Tim Hecker Anoyo
Does he ever go wrong? What a man. |
16 | | The Body and Thou Everyday, Things Are Getting Worse
Live from Roadburn. Sounds absolutely massive. Listen to this version of 'Beyond the realms' Absolutely ridiculous.
https://roadburn.bandcamp.com/track/beyond-the-realms-of-dream-that-fleeting-shade-under-the-circus-of-vanity |
15 | | Leechfeast Village Creep EP
Like a mix of Buried at sea and Dark Buddha rising from Holland. Long repetitive, trance like harsh sludge/doom with kind of groany clean vox making the harsher vox that more impactful You know... that type of thing. Just how I like it. |
14 | | Yellow Eyes Rare Field Ceiling
Controversial but this is my fave Yellow Eyes record. They have kind of got the harshness but the experimental warmth down so well now. And the experimental part of them never comes across pretentious like many can. Right in their groove. |
13 | | clipping. There Existed an Addiction to Blood
Another massively hit or miss group. Never know if I am gonna love or hate a new Clipping but always hyped to hear it. Loves all the singles and the whole album is fire. Much more down the road of what I like Clipping doing. Apart from setting fires to Pianos for 20 minutes obviously. |
12 | | Waste of Space Orchestra Syntheosis
Oranssi Pazzuzu and Dark Buddha Rising. 2 of Finland's finest sons. I saw them play this at Roadburn which is why they even exist and they transferred that phenomenal live show into the studio recording without losing anything and making it just as much of a trip. |
11 | | Motorpsycho The Crucible
Psychedelic rock legends. Still underrated after decades. Still churning out gems of albums one after another. |
10 | | Cloud Rat Pollinator
Grindcore with a lot of core/punk and a lot of influences flowing through this album and my fave Cloud rat release. Real fun. Real good. |
9 | | Deathspell Omega The Furnaces of Palingenesia
DSO are consistently phenomenal. Another masterclass is this genre. What else is there to say now about them? Oh yeah....the Mikko issue IS a problem for me but.....art from artist and all that. Am I making excuses? hmmmm |
8 | | Billy Woods, Kenny Segal Hiding Places
Used to love Kennys beats on the old Team supreme weekly mixes and also the stuff with Self Jupiter so knew he would be a perfect mix for King Billy. His best after 'History will absolve me' for me. |
7 | | Amon Tobin Fear In A Handful Of Dust
Oh snap did I say masterpiece? Say it again here. Absolutely faultless. His own genre at this point. |
6 | | Esoteric A Pyrrhic Existence
One of the greatest (if not THE greatest) of funeral doom bands back with an almightily long ,but never even remotely dull, epic comeback masterpiece. |
5 | | Liturgy H.A.Q.Q.
TrAnsanDEntAl BlACk MetAL. A love/hate relationship just got turned all the way over to love. This is just phenomenal. 'HAJJ' might be my favourite track this year. They outdone themselves here. |
4 | | Merzbow, Keiji Haino, and Balazs Pandi Become the discovered, not the discoverer
I find Merzbow difficult to listen to but with Pandis percussion and Haino being Haino it becomes hugely cathartic and energetic. For me, a really interesting couple of movements of improv noise by 3 unique musicians. |
3 | | The Haxan Cloak Midsommar (Original Score)
Stunningly beautiful score. Actually not as much of a fan of the film as many but have listened to this ridiculous amount of times this year. Massive fan of The Haxan`cloak. Great to see him doing a soundtrack to a perfectly fitting movie. |
2 | | Lingua Ignota Caligula
Really neck and neck with Mizmor. I always liked Lingua Ignota until I saw her live then something switched. I really felt it. That rawness. The gut wrenching. I felt it. She made me a fan. She made me really understand. This record is not on regular spins I am not gonna lie. It is an undertaking but Its a phenomenal exorcism. It is real. And she triggers a lot of men for some reason which makes it even greater. |
1 | | Mizmor Cairn
I was never brought up with religion so always knew it was horseshit so reading and listening to how someone deals with it the from an opposite upbringing and the realisation of its madness later in life is fascinating to me and the sorrow, frustration and anger Liam has conveyed through this record is something really solemn but really beautiful. One of my favourite artists, Some of my fave vox in the game. My album of the year. Just. |
