03.31.20 | Okay the REAL THEME is as reductive as they come: you can only rec songs by artists whose names begin with the letter B
BUT to keep things interesting, only one rec per artist - no reusing anything by any B-name that someone else has gone for
this theme is a refinement on the original, unfeasible idea of having Boris recs only for the month - but to stay true to the orignal, Boris have an exemption clause and maybe rec'd by multiple people
get your alphabetically-sorted ratings charts out, kids |

Black Light Smoke - Firefly (from Firefly)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8pyhLfO5JI
Discovered this accompanying Francis Harris and multiple Nic Jaar projects on the incredible soundtrack to Ana Lily Amipour's apocalyptic cannibal desert acid trip of a movie The Bad Batch. The heavy coldwave influences on Black Light Smoke's brand of deep house make this track brilliantly dystopian, feverish, and seductive.
Bearcubs - Underwaterfall (from Underwaterfall)

04.05.20 | Booba - Kalash 3.0
*dies laughing* Ces paroles sont en train de me tuer ahaha I love it. It's so utterly dumb that I love it. Not very original or creative, but tons of fun.
Schlagenheim - Western 3.9
Great math rock, and the dynamics are fluid. Incredibly creative, and if I give this more time, I might just consider it an all-time fave. And goddamn it Diva your opinion sucks >:( |

04.05.20 | Kalash - This seems like solid hip-hop, but unfortunately I'm as American as they can get and since I don't understand the lyrics in a genre that I really listen to for lyrics, that's a bit of a bummer - 3.0
Western - There's a lot going on here and I think I like most of it? - 3.8

04.06.20 | 4. Cosmonaut - Cold techno, I like that. The variations in the groove were not mind-blowing for techno, but it's well done fosho. 3.7
5. Never Gonna Change - I immediately linked them to Lorde, and heyo they're from NZ too so that might be the accent. Kinda like mathias, I was expecting a huge explosion that never came. 3.3
6. Flight - Cool moody alt rock with some crescendocore guitars. Not too big on this, but it's aight. 3.4 |

04.07.20 | Western - Interesting song structure agreed, definitely unexpected transition, kinda grating, but I do like the vocals more on the main upbeat verse. Weird song, don't really like it, but it's doing its thing, so.. 3
Cosmonaut - A bit too stiff in the beat dept for me. Some cool synth sounds but IDK kinda feels like it would be okay background music, but by the 4 minute mark I was definitely done with it. Not bad, but not for me. 3
Never Gonna Change - picks up nicely in the chorus, kinda dig it, good pop music. Produced really well. Not my style but I can dig it. 3.5
Flight - Sounds like it could be radio rock with some dude in the corner of the studio discovering feedback for the first time. Bass player is getting his groove on though. 2.5
Concubine - I didn't realize people actually listened to this band but this is the second time i'm listening to them for the song of the month. Genius or terrible? 2.0 |

4. Cosmonaut- Wow that took a while for something to actually happen. Aaand now it’s back to nothing. Though the nothing isn’t anything horrible. Just a bland track overall for me. 3.0
5. Never Gonna Change- Dark but fuzzy, like a nice blanket on a cold sad day. 4.0

04.07.20 | "Medicina"
This is fairly noisy and fun. I like the scratchy tone of the guitar. Her voice is nasal, but in a good way. Honestly, I could easily see myself checking this album one day.
4.2/5
"Kalash"
Deep voiced euro-hop with trap snares! This is so lame, but I guess it's good I don't know what he's rapping about because that'd probably just lower the score, so plus for that?
2.3/4
"Western"
Nice bass and the floaty guitar is cool. Whoa, that was a stark change. I feel like a chrome rainbow just fell on me after laying in a field of hay. This kinda registers as cowpunk now? The Meat Puppets, but heavier? This is good. Oh, shit a bass solo! okay, this month is awesome so far. Is that banjo? Wow, that really fits. This is great. Fuck, I might have to check this REALLY soon. Someone remind me if I forget.

Good beat so far. Trif, DJ my party one day. It's a bit repetitive, but it's techno, right? That's kinda what a lot of techno is meant to be. I'm sitting listening to this when I should be at a club hearing this. Damn you Covid-19. Trif, come to Manhattan's gay bars and blast this shit once the pandemic is over. I'll be there. This month's going stronger than the past 10 so far!
3.7/5
"Never Gonna Change"
This is so generic aaaah. I wanna be nice, but this one is making it hard. This is the epitome of no inspiration and just trying to do what'll impress the masses (and I don't mean the Sput masses, I mean like just your average college sophomores or something.)
2.5/5
"Flight"
Lots of feedback so far, okay that's always cool. Vocals are slightly unpleasant, but not awful. This is pretty bland honestly now that it's reached its hook. I feel like this is impossible to hate though.
3.1/5
"Concubine"
No fair! I already love this album! This isn't one of my faves on it though. The way he says "scapula" is oddly the best and satisfies this odd primal thing I can't explain. Freaky psychedelic noise-punk is a godsend on humanity.

04.07.20 | Medicina - Buke & Gase - Oh wow, this is really fucking cool. I like this a lot. I think I might have to check out an entire album. Oh my God, halfway through it gets even better. God damn, no wonder you switched your rec from Boris. This is fantastic. 4.3
Kalash - Booba - phlegmy, I don't know if I really enjoy this vocal delivery, it sounds like he has a cold. That's not anything to do with the language, the feature on this track doesn't sound as nasally. The beat itself is kinda pain by the numbers, I gotta pass on this one, sorry man.
Western - black midi - Not my favorite from this album, but a great track nonetheless, I love the art punk revival that's been going on. 3.6
Cosmonaut - Benjamin Damage - This is nice. I like it. uh. 3.1
Never Gonna Change - Broods - This def is not a sound I'm attracted to. It's not bad though, I just would never chose to listen to this. 2.6
Flight - The Boxer Rebellion - Hm. I don't know what to think of this really. It is alright, I like the instrumentals, I don't like the chorus. I don't think I'd listen to it again, but it's not bad by any means. 3
Concubine - Butthole Surfers - Hm. The instrumentals are so low on this, I feel like if they were kicked up a tad I'd like this a lot more. That being said, I don't get the hate..... Well no, actually I do completely understand the hate, but I dig this. It feels really cool. I only know their two most popular songs prior to this, but I wanna check out more now. 3.5
Harlem - Bill Withers - Withers had such a wonderful voice. I'd say this is probably one of my favorite tracks by him, a great opener for sure. 4
Under a Violet Moon - Blackmore's Night -Well I'm gonna assume this is Ritchie Blackmore, which means I've gotta get back into the 9th/10th grade Zach mindset. Oh my god, this is some renaissance nerd shit for sure. I am thankful for that at least, cause it's better than prog. Yenno, I like this-- Blackmore is a wonderful guitarist, and this is at least somewhat catchy, even if the verse's are boring, I'd have a blast listening to this at Ren Fest. The organ is completely unnecessary though. 3
Sonnenallee - Black Cab - I dug this, but I feel like it's missing something that could have elevated it to the next level. Love the album cover. 3.4

finally got back to this after being low on internet for a few days
Kalash - Kinda like the beat I guess? Don't really have much to say about this really... 1.8
Cosmonaut - Nice little beat to start it off, like the progression slowly building in the back. Really enjoying the melody with the synths and stuff, pretty good so far. Pretty fun track, keeps the beat going with a tight sound to it. 3.4
Never Gonna Change - I enjoy the vocals quite a bit, albeit the sound is a bit generic, still pretty chill. I agree that the vocals do kinda remind me of Lorde a bit, which is not a bad thing.... wait why did nothing big happen?? Was expecting some kind of climax there or something... 3.0 |

04.08.20 | Flight - Honestly I don't fully understand the hate this song is getting, sure, the guitars effects in it are quite overdone, but they give the piece a great atmosphere; and this is like faux avant-garde crossed with radio alt-rock, but the song is super effective as the latter(at the risk of me sounding like I'm in Pokemon). Never mind, I do understand the hate a bit more now. (Might edit this later.) 2.9
Concubine - ayy that's my song

Kalash: My brother would L O V E this. I actually like it too haha. Don't know why. Could be the intense French. Or the rhythmical vibes. 3.0
Western: Some of this is really cool. I do not really like how this shifts all the time. When are you ever in the mood for everything at once? Drummer is crazy good though. 2.9
Never Gonna Change: This is pretty nice! Could easily hear this on the radio, but that doesn't make it bad of course. Some of the dubsteppy-influences are a little too much for me. 3.0
Flight: Menacing so far. Love how this slowly takes shape. Drums are cool. Guitars too. Vox are nice too! Ok, I like this. I didn't see it go somewhere this sunny, like a really bright yet cold place. Cool! Why do you guys dislike this so much? Some bonus points to rectify that! 4.2

Under a Violet Moon - love this kinda stuff, takes me back to my tavern days serving mead to spoony bards and wayfarers. 4.5 for ol DB
Sonnenallee - I don't love a ton of dancy electronic stuff, but this one is pretty good! interesting mix and good atmosphere. i'm also staring out the window at a storm right now so that might help. 4
You Upset Me Baby - dude shreds. tough rating though, cause I don't really love it, but I respect it, sorry BB - 3.5
Ripped Van Twinkle - sounds like drugs and it never seems to end 2.5
Sunshine - Pretty wild track with some pretty killer production. Interesting interpretation, I prefer these kind of covers the most. Putting your own original spin on a song. That's what ol DB likes to hear. Takes me back. 4 |

04.14.20 | Here's a massive update nobody cares about:
Broods - nice, but feels like it didn't go as high up as it could have. 3.7
The Boxer Rebellion - I am rating this way high, but mostly because I find it super cool and an inspiring sound I might want to take inspiration from for my own endeavours, rather than it being an incredibly solid track worthy of that rating per se. 4.2
Butthole Surfers - This could be a super cool, mess up intro to something else. On its own though it feeels like it falls a bit flat. 2.9
Bill Withers - RIP man, legend. What more could I say? Ah yeah, track's dope. 4.5
Blackmore's Night - Started very nicely, but got a bit too 'drinking folk song' to my taste especially when the ?drums kick in and it starts getting all jolly, I much prefered the subdued atmosphere early on. 2.5
Black Cab - very nice progression, nice atmosphere, although again I wish it exploded a little more perhaps. 3.7
B.B. King - I like my blues a touch more abrasive, and not a fan of the more piano based/slowed down ragtime kinda approach, but one cannot go wrong with Beebee. 3.95
Bob Moses - I enjoyed the mysterious vibe and instrumentation on this, but idk it didn't really grasp me much beyond that, especially for a long track like this. 3.2
Bent Knee - I love the craziness in this, I get a faint The Jezabels vibe from the vocals. 4.0
Blind Pilot - A nice song, but felt super generic to me. I guess I should check out the lyrics but 2.6 |

Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.15.20 | 8. Bill Withers - Harlem: Bill Withers is good. Here's the thing. Bill Withers wrote 'Ain't no Sunshine'. Roy Ayers Wrote 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine. I discovered these two songs at the same time and aside from obvious thematic similarities, I associate the two songs due to this. I also mix up Roy Ayers and Bill Withers all the time. In the case of Bill Withers it's not a favourable mixup because, well, Roy Ayers (and his quintessential 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine') is way fucking better. So I'm always a tad disappointed when someone mentions Bill Withers and I eventually remember that =/= Roy Ayers. 3/5
9. Blackmore's Night - Under a GEYYYYYYYY Moon: Feeble flamboyant bard music. Mortifying. 1.5/5
10. Black Can't - Sonnenallee: Sounds like Nine Inch Nails trying to make dance music. There are some aspects to this that I really like. The guitar sHrEdDz at the end can foad tho. 3/5
11. B.B. King - You Upset Me Baby: hoidy toidy rinky tink cassette music for grandma. Finger snappin'. Crackalackin. 3/5
12. Bob NOses - Dicked Van Dyke: I already rated this earlier. It's shit I hate it. 1/5
13. Bent Bree - My Only Sunshine: Contemporary bard music. There are some pretty moments on this. That edgy ass ending is so fucking lame tho and kinda ruins the song. m/ *YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE. MY ONLY SUNSHINE. RAAAAAAAAAH* m/ rofl. 2.5/5
14. Blind Pilot - 3 Rounds and the Sound of Christ: Sounds like something my gf when I was fifteen would have just been growing out of. Also is treacherously close to sounding like bible-acoustic. 2/5
15. Breag and Bugger - II: My thoughts for the first two thirds of this is that this level of derivativeness is exactly why metal has been entirely irrelevant for the last decade. However, I will admit to enjoying the passage starting at ~4:20. Sucks again after that tho. 2.5/5 |
DungeonBoy
04.15.20 | 3 Rounds and a Sound - Nice little pop singer songwriter jam, nothing to really love or hate about it, would drink a beer on my porch with this playing in the background. 3

This is so boring so far, but it's building up to something, so I hope it's something good. Also, why the hell do to the lyrics sound so similar to "You Are My Sunshine" ??? That's really weird and makes it harder to like. WAIT SHE ACTUALLY SAID YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE??? WHAT THE FUCK? This song is like... a joke maybe? Please tell me they're kidding, this is like a parody. Generic indie-folk so far. It's pleasant though. This is what I imagine the music SowingSeason loves sounds like. Hmmm, lemme check his rating for this. "Presence of the Lord"
Nice piano, chill atmosphere, so far so good. Smooth vocals too. Nice solo yeah, this is cool. Not exactly my favorite, but deff good still.
3.6/5
"Linked"
Bleep bloop. This is cool, though it lacks a lot of what I liked about Days to Come's highlights "the soulfulness etc." It's cool though still. The pickup made this even better. I like this. Very click clacky and dancy even.
4/5
"Firefly"
This is not good music for listening while sitting, it gets boring fast. You need to dance to enjoy this. With that said, it works REALLY well for dance music. Man, it reminds me of the gay clubs I went to in Budapest. This kinda music probably wouldn't fly in NYC's gay clubs though sadly well except for maybe in... wait shhhh. I'll only lightly imply that. This music makes me yearn for a future vacation in Berlin. Somehow the woman talking is the best decision in the song since it creates this atmosphere of just trippy dancing.
4.2/5
"Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman"
Dollar store Robert Plant vocals. Dollar store 70s heavy metal in general honestly. This is fine. Like how could I hate this? But it's also not easy to love.

Bjork - her again, huh? OK, let's see what you've got for me this time, you unworldly wench, you. 04.24.20 | 15. II - i'm not the biggest fan of growl vocals, but i could tolerate these. instrumentally everything is dope. love the drums and the middle section is really cool. 4
16. Lollipopischord - cool stuff. i like the melody, it helps that the song is short, otherwise it might have gotten on my nerves 3.3
17. Iris - this is alright. there isn't much i'm latching onto though. 3
18. Presense of the lord - not a big fan of these vocals, but instrumentally this is very cool. great guitar solo 3.3
19. Linked - oh yeah this is my shit. great beats and nice melodies. 4.2 |

04.25.20 | Burial and Four Tet - Sounds a little inside out, but it's kind of cool. I like the weird, distorted vocals played softly in the background. 3.5. |

2. Kalash -french rap stuff, and I quite like French rap...but not this. [2]
3. Western - of all the songs on Schlag this one might just be ageing the best, still a [5]
4. Cosmonaut - didn't do an awful lot for me but the best new song I hadn't heard before so far [3]
5. Broods - nothing from this either, this is going to be one of those months [2]
6. Flight - this sounds exactly like music Headswin were releasing in 1994, is this aware it sounds like second tier alt rock/grunge from nearly 20 years ago? It's alright [3] |

04.26.20 | 7. Concubine - it's one way to open an album [3.5]
8. Harlem - solid soul stuff [3.5]
9. Under a Violet - lordy, this is a bit cheesy, seems like what they'd play in a theme park as you walk through Medieval World [2]

11. You Upset Me Baby - retro blues, it's fine enough [3.5] |
DoofDoof
04.26.20 | 12. Twinkle - the snoring makes this sound a bit joke'y but other than that v nice [4]
13. Sunshine - a little grating, which I expected as I'm no fan of these, but better than feared [3]
14. 3 Rounds - standard acoustic but actually ok, was fearing typico emo vox [3]
15. II - here it is, the metal, took ages arriving this week - think Isis'ish, it was pretty decent without sounding majorly original [3.5] |
DoofDoof
04.26.20 | 16. Lollipopsichord - short and sweet, and a bit forgettable [2.5]
17. Iris - not horrible but doesn't do a lot for me either [2.5]
18. In the Presence - been meaning to try this album with the risque artwork for a while, this is good enough to make me think I should [4]
19. Linked - Bonobo is consistent but doesn't send me into fits of ecstasy, and I've caught them live and still no, but this is good enough [3.5] |

04.26.20 | 20. Firefly - this is really good, after my rec last month this is similarly my sort of thing, the first new thing on the list I'll definitely download [5]
21. Nude Disintegrating - Zep'ish jammy hard rock, not bad at all [3.5]
22. Play Dead - everyone has heard this before, one of her better 'catchy' tunes [3.5]
23. Cabeca Flor - pleasant ethereal stuff, not earth shattering [3.5] |
DoofDoof
04.26.20 | 24. Six Nightmares - that voice is disgusting, like Refused for the under 12s instead of the under 21s [1.5]
25. Nova - good lads, rarely let me down [4]
26. Thrill of it All - I take the piss out of Sabbath a lot because it's easy, and this is pretty cheesy, but it's a decent enough hard rocker [4]
27. Sanity Assassin - post-punk time, not been a lot of this genre on the list this month, so more refreshing than it usually sounds...I like Bauhaus and this sounds like one of their better tunes, keeps things propulsive [4] |
DoofDoof
04.26.20 | 28. MODOKI - was literally just thinking I had hardly dished out anything below a 2, sounds like Phil Anselmo having trouble with a skipping Fear Factory CD [1.5]

30. History Repeats - some ok Prince worship to finish up on [3] |

04.26.20 | "Cabeca Flor"
A lovely atmosphere so far. I like Indian classical influence and sweet vocals. Not much else to say here, but this is good.
4/5
"Six Nightmares at the Pinball Masquerade"
Not a fan of this. I don't like these vocals. They're crossing the border of "guts being ripped out." The instrumental is fine, but other than the bass, it's like whatever. This is like At The Drive-In, but heavier, and I don't like At the Drive-In.
1.8/5
"Nova"
Chill so far. Is this supposed to be dance music or chillout music? It's trying to tread the line of both and failing at being either. Like it's too subdued to be fun party music, but also too all over the place to be relaxing. Not for me.
2.7/5
"Thrill of It All"
Good job garas, you picked my favorite song on Sabotage and my #2 Black Sabbath song of all time. The riff rules, the bass is nice, Ozzy is at his most emotional, and the lyrics are tip-top."Won’t you help me, Mister Jesus? Won’t you tell me if you can? When you see this world we live in, do you still believe in Man?" hits me like a ton of bricks. He decides to let go of all of that angst to feel happiness and freedom. Good message too. Classic stuff.

17. (corona v)Iris:
I liked Lazarus Bird and Origo long ago in jr.high/early high school when metalcore was my thing. It hasn't been my thing in over a decade unfortunately. Decent for the genre though.
2.5/5
18. Prepubescence, Oh Dear Lord:
Is anyone going to address the elephant in the room that is the naked 12-15 year old girl on the cover? Pedo-dad rock? cool.
2.5/5
19. Stinked:
I like Bonobo but personally wouldn't consider any of his post North Borders material to be very essential.
3/5
21. Nude Disinteresting Platypus Wombat:
Thought we agreed to keep recs under 8 minutes for this exact reason? Rude. Derivative, boring dad rock.
2.5/5
22. Obligatory Bork song:
Trip-Hop Bork is the only good Bork. I like debut through Vespertine and everything else can fuck off and die forever. Very good Bork pick, one of her best, inexplicable that it wasn't included on Debut proper.

04.28.20 | 20. Firefly - i love this. amazing beats and a cool melody. It changes things up just enough too in order to prevent it from being boring at any point. 4.4
21. Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman - this is great, reminds me a lot of black sabbath in the best way possible. a bit bluesy hard rock. yeah awesome stuff. 4.2
22. Play Dead - cool instrumentation but i'm not the biggest fan of bjorks vocals. it's technically very impressive, but it feels a bit overdone to me sometimes. i don't know 2.9
23. Cabeca Flor - this is very nice and pleasant 3.3 |
Pangea
04.28.20 | 24. Six Nightmares at the Pinball Masquerade - cool guitar work and is good instrumentally generalyl. not a fan of the voice though. 2.5
25. Nova - this is good, nice melody. perhaps a little too repeating for it's runtime though. 3
26. The thrill of it all - Black sabbath rule. this song is great too, but not my favourite of theirs. the riff is cool though. 3.5 |
Divaman
04.29.20 | Blaptophobia - oh dear. Another orc. I know some people love this kind of stuff, but my ear just doesn't register it as music. Besides the screaming, the music itself just seems to be going every which way. I'll give it a .2 for some interesting stuff happening on guitar. 1.2
Bic Runga - Pleasant enough. Decent voice. A reasonable song structure. Something of a hook. I''ll give it a 3.3, but it's the kind of thing that could grow on me. |

04.30.20 | 30. History Repeats - is that the girl from Alabam Shakes? This is like bluesy and soulful alt rock. It's cool, but I prefer when she just lets it goooo (like on Gimme All Your Love). 3.1 |

04.30.20 | Brittany Howard - OK, percussion and opening music is kind of cool. Her voice is just ok. Not my style of music. She does get into a pretty good groove there at the end, though. 3.0. |

05.01.20 | "Sanity Assassin"
Wow, this is early-80s as hell to the point of stereotype. Not the most interesting post-punk track I've heard by any stretch of the imagination. Not bad I guess, but not for me.
3/5
"MODOKI"
BURP BURP BURP BURP BANG BANG BANG BANG. This is just terrible. Thank god this is short. It's only 3 mins, but I feel like I've been hearing it for 15 minutes.
1/5
"Sway"
Very generic 90s pop-rock. It's catchy as hell though, I'll give it that. Her voice is good I guess.
3/5
"History Repeats"
I know 2 Alabama Shakes songs: "Hold On" and "I Don't Wanna Fight" and you know what? They're both REALLY GOOD. But on this, Brittany Howard sounds like she's mumbles over some boring blues jam. I hate to say it, but this song would've worked better with different vocals.

28. Modoki - yeah not my thing all. can't stand these kind of vocals and the riffs are pretty boring to me. 1.5
29. Sway - pretty average pop song. her voice is good but the hook is pretty weak to me. don't like the drum sound here, sound a bit too loud for a song this i guess. 2.3
30. History Repeats - good beat but otherwise this falls a bit flat for me. not a fan of how her vocals are used in this song. 2.6 |
