I still gotta play Sekiro, but man DS1 is one of my all time favorites |
hel9000
08.27.20 | only about halfway(?) through Sekiro but loving it so far. might do a revised list after completing it. |
LeddSledd
08.27.20 | DS2 doesn't get enough love. The slow-paced and as you said "deliberate" combat is really great at points and, in my opinion, works far better for PvP. |
hel9000
08.27.20 | it’s a beautiful game so far |
hel9000
08.27.20 | and yeah defending DS2 is a small passion of mine haha |
MillionDead
08.27.20 | Very respectable list. I might Sekiro rate 3rd, just after DS1.
Edit: Not sure though. DS1, Bloodborne, and Sekiro switch places in my head near constantly. |
SteakByrnes
08.27.20 | DS2 is easily the weakest to me lol, still a good game tho |
hel9000
08.27.20 | i can see why tbh. there's a lot of weird/bad shit in there. but i think there's a large amount of good-to-great stuff too.
and as much as i am loving Sekiro i don't know if i'd actually include it in this list, thinking about it more. it's different in too many ways imo. |
Ziggity
08.27.20 | DS2 definitely had best pvp and class building. |

08.27.20 | "DS1 > BB > DS3 = Demon's > DS2"
Correct ranking.
Ds3 and bb have the best bosses

Minushuman24
08.27.20 | hard disagree
DS1>BB>DS3>Demon's>>>>DS2 |
MillionDead
08.27.20 | Yeah, Sekiro is more of its own thing than any of the other games. Still, the dna is so undeniably there. |
beefshoes
08.27.20 | Great ranking and descriptions.
I have yet to play DS3 and Sekiro, but DS1 is definitely a candidate for my favourite game. The pacing and sense of growth going from those first moments after you leave Firelink through defeating Ornstein & Smough are absolutely unrivaled in gaming. And the only reason the Lordsouls section lags behind the first part of the game is because of how comparatively weak LI and the Bed of Chaos are (which I genuinely dread doing each playthrough).
For me: DS1>Demon's Souls>Bloodborne>DS2
DS2 is still a fantastic game. I just prefer the more open and non-linear style of the games that precede it in the ranking.
Also, after playing Blighttown on the 2018 remaster, it's probably my favourite area in the entire series. |
MillionDead
08.27.20 | Demon Souls over Bloodborne?? Impossible. |
beefshoes
08.27.20 | Don't take offense, because DS1 through BB are damn near perfect games to me, and I am an unabashed fanboy of these games. I started with Demon's Souls, so I have tons of nostalgia for it and my experience with its PvP, which was genuinely the best in the series when it was at its most active. Having the addition of world tendency gave invasions a hell of a lot more weight, given the consequences of both success and failure. |
SteakByrnes
08.27.20 | "Also, after playing Blighttown on the 2018 remaster, it's probably my favourite area in the entire series."
Yea for real, I liked Blighttown even before with all the frame issues but man is it dope to play it through smoothly. My favorite area is still Duke's Archives/Crystal Cave |
Ziggity
08.27.20 | Hell yea dukes archives got that dreary fantasy atmosphere down to a T. |
Pon
08.27.20 | Still haven't played Demon's Souls but BB > DS3 > DS1 > DS2 for me
Eventually I'll get around to playing Sekiro lol |
beefshoes
08.27.20 | "My favorite area is still Duke's Archives/Crystal Cave"
Amazing area indeed, with incredible atmosphere.
Hopefully the Demon's Souls remake on the PS5 will go a long way in recapturing the magic of the original experience, without too many compromises. It's a classic in its own right, and immediately stands out from the rest of the series. |
hel9000
08.27.20 | speaking of which, has there been any word on whether or not that abandoned Archstone might be brought into play? that would be amazing. |
Groundking
08.27.20 | BB>Demon's>Sekiro>DS1>>>>DS3>>>>>DS2
DS1 ends up losing too much steam after being fatboyslim that the other 3 top tier from games just don't do, DS2 has the most meh bosses and feels most like a video game. |
hel9000
08.27.20 | yeah, there are a few too many lame bosses in DS2. the best in the base game is easily missable (Darklurker) |
Thranth
08.27.20 | DS1>BB>DS3>>>Sekiro>>>>>DS2
Havent played demon souls yet. Fuck dark souls 2, sekiro is overrated as fuck too |
SteakByrnes
08.27.20 | I'm so hype for the Demon's Souls remaster man |
MillionDead
08.27.20 | Sekiro is fairly rated if you ask me. Parrying and dodging are my favorite mechanics in From games, so the emphasis on that made the moment to moment gameplay exhilarating for me. |
Thranth
08.27.20 | To me, the rpg mechanics were just so lackluster.
I love leveling and building my character with cool gear and weapons in dark souls.
There is literally none of that in sekiro |
Pon
08.27.20 | To be fair Sekiro isn't marketed as and doesn't claim to be an RPG
But I will miss the ability to make a lore-breaking abomination like I can in Souls |
Thranth
08.27.20 | Yeah, thats just personally why i dont like it as much :)
|
Groundking
08.27.20 | Yeah Steak, Demon's remaster is where it's at. |
MillionDead
08.27.20 | Yeah, Sekiro is much more straight-forward in that regard. Wouldn't call it much of an RPG. You never become that much more potent by the end than you are in the beginning, sans a few upgrades. It's just you, the controller, and the enemy. That's a pretty refreshing deviation from the norm with From, if you ask me. And I say that with RPGs typically being my favorite kind of game, too. |
LeddSledd
08.27.20 | Sekiro has a more in-depth, linear single-player experience with a larger emphasis on vertical movement.
SoulsBorne caters to multiplayer interests by having more restricted movement and varied class custimization. |
beefshoes
08.27.20 | "DS1 ends up losing too much steam after being fatboyslim that the other 3 top tier from games just don't do"
Idk man, New Londo, Duke's Archives, the Painted World and Valley of the Giants are all really awesome locations with great and memorable bosses (especially Four Kings). |
Pon
08.27.20 | Tomb of the Giants is a very underrated area IMO and one of the very few places in gaming that made me feel proper dread the first time through (another being Irithyll Dungeon). Missing two bonfires on my way to Nito didn't help allay my nerves. |
Pon
08.27.20 | If there's one complaint I have about the newer Souls games it's that they don't have interesting environmental hazards (Tomb, Sen's Fortress, etc.) outside dumb status effects and restricted movement. |
hel9000
08.27.20 | man i'm going out on a limb here but that was one aspect i liked about Frigid Outskirts. sprinting between those whiteouts got my adrenaline pumping. not really a "hazard" per se but a hindrance. |
Pon
08.27.20 | Frigid Outskirts would've been a million times more tolerable if you got a bonfire outside Lud and Zallen's arena but ah well. That said I do prefer it to a couple areas in DS2 like Iron Passage or the fuckin' Black Gulch. |
Aberf
08.27.20 | DS 2 is unplayable to me.
I haven't played Demon Souls, waiting patiently for that remake.
And BB is by far the best if not for PS4 exclusive.
So DS3=BB>DS>>>>>>>>DS2 |
LeddSledd
08.27.20 | The Black Gulch is an easy sprint (I always went back late game with poison res) but the Iron Passage can absolutely fuck itself. And so can Frigid Outskirts, though I think I prefer that area to the former.
And DS2 is a great game on its own, especially after the Scholar update. |
hel9000
08.27.20 | the poison statues and invasions in Black Gulch are annoying as hell, but i still kind of like it. i think it’s actually a neat looking area, i like the neon green on black. plus the thing with the two last giants below was cool. it really captured the feeling of being in a really deep forgotten place where you shouldn’t be. it’s a frustrating area gameplay-wise though for sure. pyromancy-ing the leech things is really satisfying though |
beefshoes
08.27.20 | "Tomb of the Giants is a very underrated area IMO and one of the very few places in gaming that made me feel proper dread the first time through (another being Irithyll Dungeon). Missing two bonfires on my way to Nito didn't help allay my nerves."

08.27.20 | I don't know how to rank these games they are all so precious.
I need to play Bloodborne and Demon Souls again to properly rank them but I've played DS1-3 through multiple times and adore them all.
DS1 probs overall favourite especially after playing the remaster. Its just got that OG charm.
But there are aspects about each that I like better than in the others and people who bandwagon on the "ds2 is shit and is barely even recognizable as a dark souls game!!!" thing are mouthbreathers |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.27.20 | "Missing two bonfires on my way to Nito didn't help allay my nerves."

at least Nito is a cakewalk once you figure him out |
Gyromania
08.28.20 | without a divine weapon nito sucks. kind of wish they didn't add in the skeletons and just made his moveset a bit quicker, prob would have made him a contender for one of my favourite from bosses.
i don't despise tomb of the giants but i don't think it's underrated either. it's a w/e area. there's not really much to see or do. it is cool that you can see izalith and ash lake from it though. |
beefshoes
08.28.20 | At least his AOE blast kills most of the skeles whenever he does it. |
Aberf
08.28.20 | FYI, using ring of fog before jumping to the Nito's boss arena will prevent the skele to aggro you.
I'm addicted to DS3 currently and I've been doing SL1 run and no death challenge (haven't had a success in this one). |

agree with Gyro if that 9/10 is relative to games in general and I guess this ranking is good. had a 2-second hissy fit at DS3 being lowest, but your reasoning is on point and DS2 deserves some extra love, props |
Scheumke
08.28.20 | I'm in the middle of them. Just finished DS3 and have yet to play DS1,2 and Demon's Souls (which I don't really have the option to play atm), but so far I would say:
BB=Sekiro>>DS3. Sekiro and Bloodborne are near perfect games imo, DS3 had more problems (uninteresting areas mostly) but the bosses were mostly great (if a little on the easier side compared to the other two, but that might just be me getting better). Sekiro remains my personal favorite of the three though. Don't yet know if I'm gonna do a BB replay first or a DS1 playthough next. |
Gyromania
08.28.20 | personally feel that ds3 and bloodborne are the most 'enjoyable feeling' games in the series (not counting sekiro). the movement and speed makes them a cut above the others. like in dark souls 1 you don't have omnidirectional rolling which is kind of a huge problem after playing bb and ds3. like johnny said you can adapt to it and once you do the early games are still an absolute treat to play, but i love the freedom of movement in their later titles. i love the improvement to i-frames too. i think demon's souls, ds, and ds2 all have some glaringly awful hitboxes and latency issues, but it isn't an overly pervasive issue for most of the games.
in terms of accessibility, i think demon's souls has to be dead last tbh. played it, loved it, maintain that it's a hard 9/10. but if i were to play it for the first time today (esp after playing other fromsoft games), i would probably think it handles horribly. world tendency was never a fully realized mechanic and is kind of poorly implemented, you have item encumbrance in the game which blows and just makes item management tedious as hell, etc. but the atmosphere and level design are so fucking good in demon's souls. it might have the best atmosphere in all of their games and i hope the remake doesn't forget that.
ds2 would be a close second last but it's all relative because this game is still absolutely incredible imo and shit on a little too often. i think it has potentially the best and most consistently enjoyable dlc of all the souls games (barring the optional bosses in each which are all dogshit and their areas are somehow even trashier) |
hel9000
08.28.20 | "but the atmosphere and level design are so fucking good in demon's souls. it might have the best atmosphere in all of their games and i hope the remake doesn't forget that"

so much fun to dual wield greatswords, too. should've mentioned duel wielding in my list. |
secondsun
08.28.20 | agreed with the ranking actually for pretty much all the same reasons. file me under the DS2 apologists, i kind of love the weird disconnected world, all the impossible geometry and the beauty of Majula gives the game a dreamlike feel unlike the others. and i actually kind of like all the humanoid bosses, i would much rather fight them than another big dumb monster that's too big to actually see half the time that you just end up standing under and stabbing in the foot the whole fight
"DS2 has the best greatsword"
absolutely, hated how they felt in 3 but 2's feel so great to use |

DS1 is still probably the peak of the franchise, plus as a sekiro fan you'll probably be happy with how forgiving the parry is in that game
BB DLC is incredible but pretty hardcore, you'd have to seriously level up for a while before you'll get anywhere in it. it does have probably the best bosses in the entire franchise |

08.28.20 | BB should have had estus over vials imo. One of the things that holds it back.

brainmelter
08.28.20 | DS1 >DS3 >BB > Sekiro. Haven’t played demon souls or dark bowls 2
Bloodborne is amazing but it was the easiest of any of the FromSoft I’ve ever played by a large margin. Fighting other hunters were tough but a majority of the bosses were dealt with without great struggle(except for dlc heh). I think the meta of having a very strong dash/dodge and incentivizing you to be as aggressive as possible made the game the easiest to be op at idk |
LeddSledd
08.28.20 | Might be in the minority here, but DS3's DLC is probably my favorite of the SoulsBorne series, with DS2 at a close second. The Painted World and the Ringed City were an absolute blast to explore, not to mention having some of the best bosses in the series (excepting the Spear of the Church).
Gael's boss fight is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular conclusions to any game I've played (or game series, depending on future DS releases). |

Good choices, I'd switch best area for Duke's Archives and make best boss Artorias for sure. My favorite class is a hybrid of dex weapons + sorcery, really fun to slice up fools with crystal magic weapon and shit. Man that Black Knight Halberd was a menace in DS1, it was so good lol. Whirligig Saw is up there too for a favorite, and the DS2 greatsword |

08.30.20 | Blood starved beast, rom the vacuous spider (controversial I know), martyr logarius, gehrman, ebrietas, ludwig, oprhan, and maria are some of from's best bosses imo |
Gyromania
08.30.20 | In agreement that micolash is complete trash tho.
Rom I think is fun to multitask. Weaving in and out of the spiders for some risky hits, then scrambling to find a path out is exhilarating as hell. I like spatial reasoning stuff like this personally. Systematically killing all the spiders and then attacking rom is when the fight becomes tedious as hell |
Gyromania
08.30.20 | "Abyss watchers, sulyvahn, dancer, lothric, nameless king, sister friede, double demons, and slave knight were all amazing lots of other good ones too"
Add soul of cinder and dragonslayer armour to that for me. I'd maybe replace suluvahn with aldrich tbh. After learning how to fight him he becomes pretty fun. Sulyvahn feels like a bloodborne boss in a sekiro game. His speed is kind of bs and his wombo combos change all the time which makes adapting to him extremely hard if not impossible |

08.30.20 | ‘I have yet to hear a convincing or compelling argument for what makes ds2 notably worse than the other games in the franchise‘
We’ve spoken about this before pots.
World design
Character design
NPCs.
Lack of atmosphere.
The bosses
The lightweight sword and shield tactics
Weapons with no meat to them
The trek from one area to the next with nothing unifying it by way of the classic From shortcuts
Some absolutely nonsense bosses.
The loss of health upon death reeked of ‘lets make it hard because people who play these games will like that’
But mainly it’s that lack of atmosphere. |

08.30.20 | the world design is disjointed otherwise it's pretty solid. it isn't as brilliantly connected as 1 but it still features a lot of class locations (esp the dlc). there are a lot of shit bosses i will concede that, and the npcs aren't as memorable on the whole. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.30.20 | Yeah map is slightly disjointed compared to Ds1 but I still love a lot of the areas. And the first half of ds3's map is worse than both, so monotonous. Pretty standard shit:underwhelming:good boss ratio for fromsoft. I enjoy/remember many of the npc's, can barely remember any ds3 npc's. |
LeddSledd
08.30.20 | yeah kinda disappointing looking at the bosses at ds2 since a bunch are just ripped straight from ds1 and/or just bad - lot of great ones to counter those, though. NPC's were pretty mememorable imo; as long as I am alive I will allow no one to talk bad about my boy Gavlan.
"You wheel? You deal! Hahahaha!" |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.30.20 | Pretty much all of zaks points are either negligible or just nonsense |
Gyromania
08.30.20 | ds2 was my first experience with fromsoft so i'm prob biased as hell but that game was my addiction for a very long time |
Scheumke
08.30.20 | Was I the only one who absolutely loved Midir? A dragon fight done completely right for me. I actually got the feeling that it was trying to actively kill me, instead of most dragon fights where its, swipe swipe firebreath repeat. |
Gyromania
08.30.20 | midir was okay. i kicked his ass after like 5 attempts. tbh the fight is just long and pretty boring. hate how some of his attack animations move him to the complete opposite end of the arena, made chasing after him a bit of a chore. still think kalameet is their best dragon. |
Thranth
08.31.20 | rom rom rom rom rom rom rom rom rom rom rom |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.31.20 | kalameet is the boi, adore that fight |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | pretty sure he's the only dragon in the series with psychic abilities too |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | wait, no. ancient dragon can speak to you. not sure if he's actually speaking or telepathically tho |
zakalwe
08.31.20 | Who the fuck is Kos or some say Kosm? |
aydross121
08.31.20 | GOAT video game series at this point.
All games are good, but if I had to rank them:
BB = DS1 = DS3 > Sekiro > Demon's souls >> DS2
DS2 is good but bosses are underwhelming, and those are my favorite moments from the series. |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.31.20 | Ancient Dragon is a fake dragon though, so he doesn't count :'[ |
aydross121
08.31.20 | "Was I the only one who absolutely loved Midir?"
Nah man I loved Midir. Mechanically, It's a bit of an endurance test, but It was still fun to whack its head with the tree stump. |
aydross121
08.31.20 | Also I can write a thesis about how the Capra Demon closet fight is ACTUALLY a great boss fight and maybe I'll do it. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | Kalameet is as lame as any other dragon fight except he thinks hes fucking professor x |
Groundking
08.31.20 | The best area they've ever done is Tower of Latria.
Best boss is Gerhman, the music is amazing and he has one of the nicest boss rooms and is hard as nails if you don't parry cheese. |
hel9000
08.31.20 | “ The best area they've ever done is Tower of Latria.”
I might agree with you here. Those screams are fucked up, I love how dark that area is |
Groundking
08.31.20 | The atmoshpere in the area is amazing and the lore behind it all is messed up. |
Thranth
08.31.20 | whats the best way to play demonsouls now? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | Probably wait for the remaster |
Thranth
08.31.20 | okay thanks. Also capra demon is a good fight, i never understood why people thought it was so bad |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | I like capra demon. The dogs were annoying as shit but you can spam them by just running up the stairs and standing on the ledge so you cant get gangbanged |
DungeonBoy
08.31.20 | I have Dark Souls remastered sitting on my shelf. It's the only Souls game I haven't played/beaten, but i'm anxious about starting it. These games have a way of consuming my life and patience. I'm not very good at them, but I manage to beat all of them. The Lord of Cinder took me 3 hours to beat, but I finally beat him. I always win. Never forget that. |
hel9000
08.31.20 | Another Capra fan here. It’s a fun, tense little encounter |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | Ds1 remaster is a delight my dude |
SteakByrnes
08.31.20 | When I first played Dark Souls I got stuck at the Capra Demon, I gave up for a bit and then after not playing for months I beat him first try lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | And then u get to go fight like 5 of them in a row later and feel like a fuckin big boy |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | I think sif is still my favorite fromsoft boss fight. Just so tragic and beautiful |
Thranth
08.31.20 | Its interesting how different bosses give people an extremely varied amount of trouble. I beat capra first try, and DS1 was my first souls game.
Yet when i got to DS3, that damn crystal witch kicked my ass for hours, and shes considered easy for most |
SteakByrnes
08.31.20 | Sif is great, and the added scene if you do the dlc before fighting him is a heart wrencher. Artorias is def my favorite boss fight, that was exhilarating and almost like an incredibly dangerous dance haha |
DungeonBoy
08.31.20 | "that darn crystal witch kicked my butt for hours, and shes considered easy for most"
that's embarrassing dude. |
GuanoBumbershoot
08.31.20 | There were an embarrassing amount of times where the combination of caffeine, frustration, time spent, and brewing gamer rage led to my face actually shaking while fighting The Nameless King. Even when I had his rhythms down and everything, I still found endless ways to fuck myself over. One of the most satisfying/memorable game boss experiences I've ever had. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | "Its interesting how different bosses give people an extremely varied amount of trouble. "
yeah agreed, one instance that comes to mind is my friend having a fucking nightmare of a time against Quelaag on his first run of ds1 and then I caught up to him and crushed her in like two or three attempts. Capra was also difficult for me my first playthrough but he's been a cakewalk ever since. Crystal Witch is deffs jokes tho, she's only ever killed me once on NG+.
"Sif is great, and the added scene if you do the dlc before fighting him is a heart wrencher. Artorias is def my favorite boss fight, that was exhilarating and almost like an incredibly dangerous dance haha"
I know, so sad. Artorias is up there for sure too although he made me pretty mad on NG+. Speaking of dangerous dances, Dancer of the Boreal Valley is a great fight. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | "The Nameless King. Even when I had his rhythms down and everything, I still found endless ways to fuck myself over. One of the most satisfying/memorable game boss experiences I've ever had."
i feel you
dat second phase. |
LeddSledd
08.31.20 | I felt the exact same way about Gael. Something about his spastic attack patterns just didn't click with me for the longest time. The feeling of fighting this crazed being bent on taking the life essence of the last survivors of a broked world was so thrilling - and upon beating him, being the only one left after an endless cycle of failed rekindlings.
Definitely the most I've ever been absorbed in a game's narrative. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | also i honestly like most of the ds2 boss fights to varying degrees. there are a few terrible ones but there are a few terrible ones in every fromsoft game. Plus Fume Knight, Sir Alonne, and Burnt Ivory King are top tier fromsoft bosses imo |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | Gael is top 5 fromsoft boss material for me |
LeddSledd
08.31.20 | Alonne and Ivory King are fantastic. Fuck Fume Knight tho, his hitboxes are the definition of broken. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | haha he's definitely no walk in the park |
GuanoBumbershoot
08.31.20 | "dat second phase."
Oh man...the amount of times I lost to him, I really started to resent having to do the first phase each subsequent time to get to face off against him again. Especially considering I could do the first phase in my sleep after like the first 2 attempts lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | haha totally by the time i finally beat him i could pretty much fuck his wyvern up in like 60 seconds with 1 or 2 ripostes, it was second nature.
took me a couple sessions and rage quits to finally kill that dude but my god was it satisfying. will never forget that boss. |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.31.20 | recently took him out with a master's rags, 4 estus and a bandit knife build. shit was absolutely fraught and that wyvern is toast every time |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | "Kalameet is as lame as any other dragon fight except he thinks hes fucking professor x"
except for the fact that he doesn't play much like the other dragon fights at all. he isn't spending 90% of his time flying away from you and he doesn't have a tediously huge health pool |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | "recently took him out with a master's rags, 4 estus and a bandit knife build."
OK VIRGIN
"he isn't spending 90% of his time flying away from you and he doesn't have a tediously huge health pool"
oh bruh flies plenty
i was mostly being facetious tho he's definitely one of the least worst dragons |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | "Fume Knight, Sir Alonne, and Burnt Ivory King are top tier fromsoft bosses imo"
fume knight 100%. that fight is perfect after you use those smelter wedges. one of the best they've ever done. sir alonne and burnt ivory king i just do not get tho. sir alonne has an awesome boss room but his moveset is rly dull and uninteresting and he keeps jumping away from the player. burnt ivory king has perhaps the best boss presentation they've done and yet the fight is incredibly 1 dimensional. he spends sooooo much time jumping away from the player and he does the same like 1 or 2 attacks over and over again |
Mongi123
08.31.20 | Switch 2 and 1 for me. And DS 2 is absolute trash. Easily the clunkiest and most tedious one i've placed. Never played demon souls but i'm gonna play the remake. DS is awesome. Honestly, if we threw Sekiro in there I'd be 3 for me. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | you really don't like when bosses practice social distancing huh? |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | also sif is great for his lore but the fight is pretty w.e. royal rat authority is basically a better version of it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | nah sif fight is absolutely gorgeous royal rat authority on the other hand is one of the worst boss fights of all time |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | i don't understand how anyone who's played ds can think ds 2 is "absolute trash". |
Mongi123
08.31.20 | Agreed with pots Sif is beautiful and honestly kinda somber to fight for me cause I hate killing wolfs/dogs in games lol |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | lol pots i was just kidding. was expecting an outrageous reaction because royal rat is universally considered trash |
Mongi123
08.31.20 | Also, I found the gems to be totally unreliable, you're takes for goddamn ever to heal with the flasks, and the dodged threw attacks mechanic always felt super broken for me. Guess we just had different experiences with it. |
Mongi123
08.31.20 | Who knows? Maybe I was just total jack shit at that particular one for some reason. I'm pretty good and the other ones, especially bloodborne. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | " royal rat is universally considered trash"
is it? it sure should me. i fucking hate that rat
it's not quite gimmick tier bad (like rat vanguard, witch of izalith, micolash etc) but definitely one of my absolute least favourite normal fromsoft boss fights |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | i will agree with you that estus drinking is complete garbage in ds 2. another annoyance i have is how long it takes you to go through fog walls. pretty sure in ds1 once you interacts with it that's it, you have i-frames and will make it through np, but in ds2 i can't begin to recount the number of times i died due to some enemy running up and lunging at me a second before i passed through and cancelling the animation |
Mongi123
08.31.20 | Oh god fuck the bed of chaos. Fuck it all to hell. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | ds1 felt way clunkier/jankier than ds2 to me and i played it directly after ds2. i also personally find ds2 to be the easiest of the souls games if you don't include the dlc so yeah i dunno |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | ds1 you can get fucked up traversing fog walls too, if u arent quick enough to get to four kings or ornstein boss fights for instance, you will get rekt |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | royal rat authority sucks because of the smaller rats that poison you, and his hitbox is wonky plus it's just a way shittier sif fight. royal rat vanguard at least has a cool looking boss room and okayish gimmick. wouldn't rate in my top 50 bosses but it isn't the worst thing ever |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | yeah ill take vanguard over authority tbh |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | pots: it is possible but you can't deny it's a much bigger issue in ds2. it seems to take like 3 times longer in ds2, plus enemy placement is pretty bad. like don't get me wrong i love ds2 and will defend the hell out of it but the gank squads in that game are the worst in all of their games, and they have a tendency to place them right before a boss |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | i've never noticed either of those things tbh and i've played ds2 vanilla twice through and scholar twice through |
Mongi123
08.31.20 | If we're talking favorite FromSoft bosses, I genuinely think it's the Guardian Ape for me. Perfect amount of difficulty, absolutely jaw dropping in the way it's animated and they really know how to make something as simple as an ape seem intimidating af lol idk if I'm in the minority on that. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | to be completely frank there isn't a single overly troublesome gank squad that jumps to mind for me for ds2, i remember you hate the chariot commute and consider that a pretty bad gank squad but i never had much trouble with it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | havent played sekiro but will likely get a ps4 once ps5 comes out and play that and bloodborne again |
Mongi123
08.31.20 | Sekiro will kick your ass lol such a great game. I honestly never made it too far in DS 2. But yea there's bosses with gimmacks that just don't seem like they belong in a souls game like that chariot thing. |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | scholar makes it even worse with endless rehashed enemies and mini bosses. i used to love the sinner fight until i was subjected to the scholar version of it. i feel like fromsoft's thought process is: "how can we make this cool boss fight harder? ah, i know: let's turn it into a gank fight". most of the bosses that come to mind have long runs to get to and feature a ton of enemies. enemy density in the game is a huge problem at times. like those lame ass whip guys guarding the way to the executioner's chariot, or all of the optional dlc bosses. shrine of amana comes to mind too, which was terrible to run back through. even velstadt with the bonfire close by was a chore due to the like 20 enemies outside his room |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | mongi: i'm one of the people who dropped their controller after phase one and laughed saying "what a fight!". when i stood up to go get some food i got the shock of my life lmao. definitely agree that fight is incredible. doesn't get enough credit |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | and yeah pots sekiro is hard af. sword saint is probably the most challenging fromsoft boss they've ever made. i must have died to him for like 5 straight hours before i got the W |
Mongi123
08.31.20 | Demon Of Hatred for worst FromSoft boss ever? That thing is excessively difficult and you can barely block anything. And it has three. THREE health bars lmao |
LeddSledd
08.31.20 | yeah agreed that DS2 has an issue with over-ganking. the worst part about some of the harder bosses is that you have to kill 30 heavily armed guards in front of the fog gate every time you try again, or spend like 3 minutes running in circles to lure them away enough so that they don't cancel the fog animation |
Pon
08.31.20 | None of the ganks in DS2 are particularly "troublesome" I guess but they can get really tedious, especially as you come to expect them at every turn. It only took me three tries to beat Smelter Demon for example, but it was still incredibly annoying to have to lure about a dozen Alonne Knights in a very specific order on the way because of their ridiculous aggro-ranges.
Weirdly enough though I didn't mind the Shrine of Amana despite all the horror stories I'd heard. |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | i thought it was terrible for a while but once you know how to fight it it isn't the worst thing ever. it has some bs moves but after countless deaths you learn that every single attack is avoidable. i've beat him without taking damage. it is a bit of a tedious fight tho, same as midir. shit just drags on forever |
LeddSledd
08.31.20 | Shrine of Amana sucks solely because of those fucking mages that can hit you from across the map. that attack is ridiculously stupid
also those long-tongue bleed monsters that lurk in the water |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | "scholar makes it even worse with endless rehashed enemies and mini bosses. i used to love the sinner fight until i was subjected to the scholar version of it. i feel like fromsoft's thought process is: "how can we make this cool boss fight harder? ah, i know: let's turn it into a gank fight". most of the bosses that come to mind have long runs to get to and feature a ton of enemies. enemy density in the game is a huge problem at times. like those lame ass whip guys guarding the way to the executioner's chariot, or all of the optional dlc bosses. shrine of amana comes to mind too, which was terrible to run back through. even velstadt with the bonfire close by was a chore due to the like 20 enemies outside his room"
yeah i dunno ive never noticed much of a discrepency between the souls games in this matter, they all have some shitty commutes and ganks. i think yall need to get better at running or somethin |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | jac: alonne knights are before sir alonne, but the blue smelter boss run was fucking abysmal too. like ledd said, it kind of blows ass that in order to rechallenge a lot of bosses the most optimal thing to do is somehow kite them around a room until you think you'll have enough frames to make it through the fog wall or systematically take out every single enemy. this is especially bad for ancient dragon which i forgot to mention. if you die to him don't even bother attempting to fight him again tbh |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | "yeah agreed that DS2 has an issue with over-ganking. the worst part about some of the harder bosses is that you have to kill 30 heavily armed guards in front of the fog gate every time you try again, or spend like 3 minutes running in circles to lure them away enough so that they don't cancel the fog animation"
like which? run faster
"It only took me three tries to beat Smelter Demon for example, but it was still incredibly annoying to have to lure about a dozen Alonne Knights in a very specific order on the way because of their ridiculous aggro-ranges.
Shrine of Amana sucks solely because of those fucking mages that can hit you from across the map. that attack is ridiculously stupid"
oh yeah i remember these things. love both of those areas tho lol. |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | "yeah i dunno ive never noticed much of a discrepency between the souls games in this matter, they all have some shitty commutes and ganks"
idk if this applies to ds3 lol. they're a bit stupid with the bonfire placements. oceiros is the only one that comes to mind that was a bit of a chore to get back to, but you don't have to really worry about dying to anything along the way. champion gundyr too. that actually might be the hardest boss run in the game come to think of it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | re: ancient dragon
run more better
and don't die
its virtually impossible to die to ancient dragon if you know how to fight him anyway
easiest dragon in the franchise |
LeddSledd
08.31.20 | i actually always skipped the Smelter Demon and just charged my way through to get to the bonfire right before the Old Iron King. after dying a dozen times it just becomes second nature to aggro the alonne knights in order or just run past them altogether. |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.31.20 | Royal rat authority has v little value but isn't offensively bad
"OK VIRGIN"
ex-virgin bby, that boi is thicc and I have scars to show you |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | guardian dragon is at least a thousand times easier than ancient dragon. ancient dragon has a hilariously stupid hitbox. i've died to his claw swipes from like 20 feet away. he's also moved his foot back an inch and brushed my shoulder and insta killed me. and ofc his terrible fire aoe attack. it's easy enough to dodge once you know to run towards his tail, but it's still incredibly stupid. worst dragon boss in the franchise by a huge margin imo |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | u literally just wedge yourself between his toes and run back and forth between his left and right leg whenever he tries to stomp, hacking away with two hands the entire fight and you'll never get hit |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | because he's so easy to spam i'll agree that he's one of the worst dragon fights but yeah he's easy af |
Pon
08.31.20 | I had no problem getting to the Ancient Dragon and the fight itself is a complete joke yeah. Terrible boss runs in DS2 that I recall off the top of my head Lud & Zallen, Gank Squad, both Smelter Demons, Chariot, The Rotten, Velstadt, Sir Alonne and - more than anything else - the fuckin' Darklurker |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | yeah, that's the exact strat i do but i'm telling you, sometimes he moves his leg a tiny bit and BAM instakill. his hitboxes are egregiously shit |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | Lud and Zallen and Sir Alonne commutes are aids i will agree to that
The Rotten is super easy tho dunno what you're talking about there, did u miss the secret bonfire?
Chariot run has always been easy for me too, Gank Squad run is annoying but easy to manage, don't really remember the other ones |
Pon
08.31.20 | I think the only boss that made the requisite-enemy-kills shtick fun was Burnt Ivory King cause you can bring your own squad with you. It almost felt like an apology lol |
LeddSledd
08.31.20 | I HATED the Darklurker
But The Rotten? Cmon man there's a bonfire right in front of the fog gate |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | Sir Alonne commute is so bad that i eventually just defaulted to farming everything in the area until they stopped respawning |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | darklurker is complete fucking trash agreed. i mean the fight is great but the boss run is one of the stupidest things they've ever done. lud and zallen is possibly the worst boss run they've ever done. the rotten is easy tho - you must have missed the hidden bonfire right by his door. i farmed that boss for sooooo long. i think my bonfire ascetic on him is like 110 or something stupid |
Pon
08.31.20 | "did u miss the secret bonfire"
I did on my first playthrough so I had to hack through the broken-hitbox slime-hand things and then got a series of NPC invasions. I know the commute is short but it is very unforgiving if you aren't privy to the area's secrets. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | hot take but i love the gulch |
LeddSledd
08.31.20 | hard agree, the gulch is one my favorite areas in the game. love the atmosphere and enemy designs, especially the hidden giants. my only gripe is the poison statues but they're easy if you know how to counter them. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | yeah the secret giant cave is so dope
also big fan of the gutter tbqh |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | agreed it's a great area. it's short but it has such a distinct look and feel to it. and yeah the giants were a cool addition. they're actually hard af to fight if you arent' kiting them around and fighting them individually |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | the gutter is kind of garbage tho tbh. it's like a way less inspired blighttown |
Pon
08.31.20 | Y'all see that recent video on the scrapped version of The Gutter?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_YcEvpAafE |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | heides tower of flame, forest of the fallen giants, iron keep, drangleic castle, black gulch, and maybe brightstone cove are my favourite areas of the core game |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | nah gutter is sick its like a way more open blighttown. love the endless depth of it, love the way the cavern walls look like they are melting, love the process of lighting all the torches and the ability to just take massive leaps of faiths to different areas etc, its fuckin danke |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | wait, not brightstone cove. that area is trash. i meant doors of pharros |
LeddSledd
08.31.20 | also, can we get some love for the Ashen Mist Heart mechanic? not only do you get to travel back in time through a memory and kill giants, but you also fight Sir Knight Alonne and the Giant Lord, who is the Last Giant that you re-killed at the start of the game
so sick |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_YcEvpAafE"
this is dope |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | those memories are very weak tho and that boss is extremely w.e |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.31.20 | Ashen Heart is kinda cool, and kinda "uh hi, it's the endgame: TIME TRAVEL! ok have fun" - like, I know the flow of time is distorted etc., but the exposition was clunky as hell |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | https://www.medicinenet.com/antihistamines_with_decongestants-oral/article.htm |
LeddSledd
08.31.20 | :-(
yeah ok i guess you plebs cant handle how much it rocks |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | the 3 giant memories were a bit unsubstantial but the idea was cool
but sir alonne was dope and i'm not buying the "he moves away from you" criticism because I don't see how that is a determining factor in a bosses quality unless u are just really impatient - in which case what are you doing playing souls games? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | also lol at criticizing "exposition" in a souls game |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | hitting an enemy only to have him jump 50 feet away from you and make you wait ages for an opening with not much to do other than holding up guard is pretty boring tbh. i like that fume knight is constantly engaging you and forcing you to roll and block and go for risky attacks. more than anything tho sir alonne just plays a lot like his alonne knights. like his moveset really isn't anything special when you break it down. same with burnt ivory king. the only things they get to show a change in the fight is a damage buff to their swords, whereas fume knight gets a huge new moveset with varying attack speeds. i just feel like they put way more effort into fume knight |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | also this video on the gutter is incredible. still have like 10 mins to go but it's insane to think of how cool this area could have been. they didn't need to scrap the black glutch either, they could have just made a cave at the bottom that led to it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | bruh alonne literally jumps away from you for .5 seconds and then closes the gap with a sword rush i have no idea what ur talking about re: waiting for openings for ages |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | there are much worse offenders for making you wait for an opening to attack in this franchise about waiting for openings to attack |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | he jumps back a lot if i remember correctly. his huge jump back is usually followed by a lunge but a lot of his smaller jumps are just annoying. it's nowhere near as bad as burnt ivory king tho |

08.31.20 | yeah he jumps back a lot but this in no way prevents you from having an opening to attack like every 4 seconds
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr7YUftzASA |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | also think the spectacle of rolling into the burnt ivory king battle with an army of homies and sealing all the portals is dope, cool fight |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | yeah i just watched that fight and i still remember it pretty well. but see, he has like... 4 moves. maybe 6 if you count slight variations but they're very slight. a lunch upper slice, a lunge stab, a 1-2 attack that he does like 90% of the time, and the very rare move where he jumps in the air and drives his sword into the ground. oh and the even rarer weird projectile attack that's easy as balls to dodge. it isn't a bad fight, it's actually a pretty good one, but i really don't get the hype. his moveset is ridiculously simplistic and fighting him doesn't feel especially exhilarating (to me at least). fume knight has like 30 different attacks and is much faster paced. he also has a proper phase 2 which is something sir alonne is lacking. |
Gyromania
08.31.20 | yeah burnt ivory king i do love the spectacle i agree it is dope. having your boys fend off the knights and sacrifice themselves for you to have that final confrontation is cool. his sauron-like entrance too is total badass and one of the coolest in the franchise. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | part of the hype is just that he's just really fucking cool |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.20 | i can see ur point tho |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | and seperating burnt ivory knight from the first phase of the battle i can see how he is underwhelming compare to fume too but that whole first part with the boi's is all part of the battle to me |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | i love the little lore reference of entering fume knight battle in velstadt armor and having him immediately start in phase 2 out of sheer butthurt |
hel9000
09.01.20 | Yeah. I love his death scream too |
aydross121
09.01.20 | I also didn't feel Sir Alonne played more defensively than, say Artorias. Both guys liked to jump back but immediately went in again. Also his checked floor is majestic, that thing alone gives DS2 a +1 point. |
Gyromania
09.01.20 | hahaha i didn't know about the velstadt armour. that is too funny |
Gyromania
09.01.20 | yeah don't get me wrong sir alonne is one of the best bosses in ds2, i just don't think he's one of the best in the franchise. i feel he gets overrated quite a bit and i think a lot of that has to do with the aesthetics of the battle. and i do admit it's a gorgeous looking arena and alonne looks badass |
Gyromania
09.01.20 | imagine all the people who got to fume knight and just happened to be wearing velstadt's armour who were like "fuck this shit this is stupid" |
aydross121
09.01.20 | Yeah agree, gameplay-wise Alonne is fun to fight but it's no Champion Gundyr. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | "i think a lot of that has to do with the aesthetics of the battle. and i do admit it's a gorgeous looking arena and alonne looks badass"
well tbf aesthetics of the battles is an important component to my enjoyment and most of my highly ranked boss fights are pretty atmospheric hence sif being an all time fav |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | "imagine all the people who got to fume knight and just happened to be wearing velstadt's armour who were like "fuck this shit this is stupid""
dat me
after getting fucking rekt'd numerous times i tried some different armour and rolled into the boss fight like "???????" |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | and funnily enough, i ended up beating him my first run with a method of baiting him into keeping his baby sword powered up for the whole fight which makes it so he never enters phase 2 so i spent pretty much my entire time fighting him in either one phase or the other but never both lmao |
Pon
09.01.20 | "i love the little lore reference of entering fume knight battle in velstadt armor and having him immediately start in phase 2 out of sheer butthurt"
Is he butthurt or does he simply recognise you as a threat who bested the guy who bested him? We'll never know m/ |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | ^Velstadt bested Fume Knight and besmirched his rep bro |
Gyromania
09.01.20 | haha it's always interesting to hear the different experiences souls players have. like crystal sage being a wall. i want to say wtf is that, but i've gotten hard stuck on bosses other people have apparently sailed through. like burnt ivory king i beat second try, meanwhile i was stuck on pontiff for like 2 hours. i think oceiros is a total joke and can do a no-damage run on him like 90% of the time but apparently people get stuck hard on him too. gundyr as well i never thought was that hard despite him being a huge wall for players. even nameless king i don't find too hard but he is def a challenge, meanwhile dragonslayer armour and old demon king wreck my shit for days.
and yeah aesthetics are def important. it's why i love the dragon fight in sekiro. unlike yhorm from ds3, the divine dragon is a spectacle fight done well. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | Fume Knight fucked off to Brume to get stronger cuz he lost to Velstadt and was outcast as a traitor so yeah no doubt he's harbouring some ill will |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | That being said i'm under the impression that when u roll in in velstadts armour he is literally mistaking you for velstadt, much in the way that in ds1 when you fuck up artorias and put on his armour and save his dog and kill the darkness monkey people mistake you for artorias and give him all the credit anyway |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | ur like a quarter of the size of both of those homies but i've always been under the impression that most of the humanoid bosses are either hollowed or completely off their rocker and not particularly bright |
Pon
09.01.20 | "i'm under the impression that when u roll in in velstadts armour he is literally mistaking you for velstadt"
Aren't you a little short for a king's guard? |
Pon
09.01.20 | Fume Knight might be hollowed but Velstadt certainly didn't look it in the cutscene before you fight him so who knows? |
Gyromania
09.01.20 | lmao they'd have to be pretty fucking stupid to confuse your height. i mean the difference in height is staggering. i used to think maybe it was just the abyss or w/e that corrupted them and made them huge, and that prior to they were around the same size as you, but i don't think that's the case. i'd much rather prefer that raime sees you wearing velstadt's armour and thinks "holy shit this guy killed velstadt and velstadt bested me. better immediately buff" but the truth is more likely that he's just way too far gone at that point |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | "Aren't you a little short for a king's guard?"
yeah like i said ur a little short to be artorias too but here we are
but yeah thats just my read. you certainly don't do a whole lot of conversing with most of these dudes, they all seem to be like mindlessly doing their duties well past the expiration date of their sanity
i don't think a whole lot of them are doing too much thinky-thinky by the time you get to them
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | "mao they'd have to be pretty fucking stupid to confuse your height. i mean the difference in height is staggering. i used to think maybe it was just the abyss or w/e that corrupted them and made them huge, and that prior to they were around the same size as you, but i don't think that's the case. i'd much rather prefer that raime sees you wearing velstadt's armour and thinks "holy shit this guy killed velstadt and velstadt bested me. better immediately buff" but the truth is more likely that he's just way too far gone at that point"
yeah my take is that they are just that far gone. i prefer it that way tho, it just seems so bleak and dark soulsy that all these once great giants are all completely fucked.
i mean just look at the state of poor vendrick bruh literally just pacing around in circles like a fucking loony |
hel9000
09.01.20 | Talking to Vendrick in the Memory of the King might be my favourite NPC encounters in the series. |

09.01.20 | "If we're talking favorite FromSoft bosses, I genuinely think it's the Guardian Ape for me"
Sekiro is a contender for second best boss fights tbh. Guardian Ape, Sword Saint and Owl are all 10/10. Even the gimmick ones are fun. |
hel9000
09.01.20 | "The abyss once had form, but then disappated. And yet traces of its existence endured.

My dear Shandra, was one such fragment."
:( i feel for Vendrick |
secondsun
09.01.20 | one of my favorite details is how vendrick is basically the only boss in the entire series that doesn't drop his soul when you kill him. he just withers away into ash :( |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.01.20 | "also lol at criticizing "exposition" in a souls game"
What exactly do you mean by this, Pots? I think the atmosphere and continuity of these games benefits a lot from subtle exposition and lore hints incorporated into environmental design, and DS2 suffers somewhat from being easily the worst at this |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.01.20 | What i mean is that the ~exposition~ in souls games is notoriously cryptic, drip fed through object descriptions, vague monologues, and environmental queues, left to be pieced together and interpreted at length. The way it's presented is deep, but it's hardly comprehensive. It's become comprehensive by the act of people deciphering it. Even at its absolute least subtle - as you are arguing that it is in ds2 - referring to such elusive, enigmatic, and disjointed (in presentation) lore as "clunky exposition" just strikes me a tad preposterous, comparatively speaking. |

09.03.20 | I cast Thread Revival |
beefshoes
09.03.20 | Replaying DSR on Switch, and Artorias never fails to completely fuck my shit up |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.03.20 | this thread encouraged me to start NG+3 on DS1r and playing it with the criticisms about DS2 in mind made me even more certain that said criticisms are entirely bullshit and that all the other games are just as guilty.
DS1 has some of the shittiest gank-squad nightmare-fuel boss commutes of all time. Seath? Ornstein + Smough? Four Kings? Fuuuuuck that! And this perfect seamless map? How the fuck am i going to go inside a tree underground underneath a swamp and wind up outside near a lake gazing up at the sky smdh. And speaking of bullshit enemy placement, fuck the dukes archive and fuck blight town fuck sens fortress and fuck the depths. Clunkiness? Fighting the camera in DS1 while you walk across surfaces the size of a tight rope is not epic and you know what? Fuck that one fucking tree branch in Blighttown. Also fuck the limited warp travel making me trudge back and forth through these nightmares 400 times.
Having said all that, its still the best game ever and shit don't phase because all of these issues are my bitch by now.
It's all a part of the infuriating bullshit charm of the franchise. |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.03.20 | @Pots aight, I feel exactly the same about the first half of that comment, but also think that a talking dragon throwing a no-comment time travel device at you just in time for the endgame is something that feels (for me) intuitively awkward and not all that cogent with the game's lore as established up to that point. this is probably because 1) DS2 didn't include enough cryptic pointers to suggest that this could ever be a thing or 2) it did, and I square-on failed to read them. either way, I think other developments in the plotlines (DS shift from bells of awakening to lordvessel, changing role of Gael in DS3 dlc, p much everything in BB) have been handled much more smoothly and seemed to respond to subtle tells the game telegraphed in advance of them - so i think "clunky exposition" does apply relative to other games.
if we're talking about the series in general, then i agree it would be a ridiculous criticism, but we're not at e3 here |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.03.20 | "And speaking of bullshit enemy placement, fuck the dukes archive and fuck blight town fuck sens fortress"
Duke's Archive can do one, but Sen's is perfect and I have too much stockholm syndrome for Btown not to contend, how dare you |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.03.20 | don't get me wrong i love btown but yeah deffs in a stockholm syndrome kinda way
and dying in sen's fortress before the first and only bonfire is in my top 5 least favourite places to die in ds1 up there with anywhere between that FUCKING jail in dukes archive and the next bonfire, anywhere in new londo, and anywhere on the commute down or out of blightown |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.03.20 | also re: poor npc/character designs...
im sorry but fucking frampt slash all the other primordial serpents have the literal worst character design i've ever seen in my entireeeee liiifffeeeeeeeeeee |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.03.20 | also griggs and petrus and co lmao |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.03.20 | Yo also hot take but fuck crystal cave |
aydross121
09.03.20 | Crystal Cave does kinda suck, but the butterflies look majestic and the oysters always make me lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.03.20 | its certainly pretty
too bad i don't have time to stop and look around while i'm trying not to plummet to my death off slippery crystals and invisible paths while being chased by 6 crystal golems and 74 clams just to go chase seaths tentatails around in circles for 10 minutes |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.03.20 | but again i love every inch of that game, just think its nonsense when people try to pretend ds2 is any more cupable for some serious fuckin bullshit than any of the others |
aydross121
09.03.20 | Yeah those stages are obviously rushed. One of the biggest telltales is the oysters being able to go into the seath fight with you lol |
aydross121
09.03.20 | I'm also on the boat of saying DS2 is my least favorite game, but that one is still better than most other franchises best games. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | I feel u. I dont take issue with matter of opinion when it comes to ranking the souls games, just people who make grossly hyperbolic claims that ds2 is an abomination within the standings of the franchise |
hel9000
09.04.20 | DS2's exposition isn't up to the other games (lots of completely empty rooms with no personality, huge difference from say DeS) but it has its moments - Nashandra's portrait cursing you comes to mind. |
SteakByrnes
09.04.20 | Crystal Cave owns |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | I can think of plenty empty rooms in Ds1 with "no personality"
Not that I think the interior design of rooms in dark souls games are or need to be constantly littered with exposition in general but |
hel9000
09.04.20 | Ok, i guess that would fall under immersion then. Still, I'm replaying DeS now and there's something to be said for a world that feels lived-in. DS2's world is fun and fantastical but I don't really get that lived-in vibe half the time, not that it even hinders the game for me. |
LeddSledd
09.04.20 | a good deal of that is due to DS2's troubled development. there's a link further up in this thread to a video that explores a scrapped design for The Gutter that had way more personality than the current one. it still turned out great but with more time it could've been heavily improved. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | I dont remember demon souls well enough to comment on that one but tbh the notion of souls areas feeling "lived in" strikes me as a bit counter-intuitive or something? I've always appreciated the feeling that these vast castles and cities etc are degrading and mostly abandoned as the world sinks into chaos and madness, Ive felt that that's intentional and compliments the feelings of loneliness, hostility, and hopelessness of the franchise |
LeddSledd
09.04.20 | well i think "lived in" in the sense that there used to be a kingdom there, a civilization, but it's long gone and the area has long since been abandoned. some areas just kind of feel "there" without much of a glimmer into their past; whereas Vendrick's Castle gives the impression of a corrupted, now-abandoned, once-great fortress of a mighty king and company |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | Yeah i dont see how that's any different across the franchise aside from maybe bloodborne which feels very lived in front to back because basically the entire map is just the same monotonous city design |
Colton
09.04.20 | There's definitely some variation in Bloodborne's map design from what I remember |
hel9000
09.04.20 | Yeah like I look around the rooms in Heide's, Tseldora, Shaded Woods and wonder what was even going on there - like did people live here, or? Anyway it's a nitpick and doesn't even detract from my deep love of DS2. I just think that it's a particular strong point of DeS, BB and DS1. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | Again there are some pretty damn inhospitable areas in Ds1 and ds3 too |
LeddSledd
09.04.20 | Grave of Saints, Huntman's Copse, Heide's, Tseldora, and the Lost Bastille are all pretty weak in that regard yeah. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | Also serious question who the fuck lived in blight town? Squatters? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | Why would a giant mausoleum ever look lived in |
hel9000
09.04.20 | "What was this location's purpose" is what I mean. |
LeddSledd
09.04.20 | @pots inhospitable or "lived in" isn't the issue as much as personality and unspoken exposition. i don't see anyone living in Black Gulch but it is still a visually distinct and fun area that speaks for itself |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | Huntsman's copse is great and is better in regards to looking like it was ever inhabited and having exposition than darkroom garden |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | Refreshing my memory of all the areas led listed and disagree across the board |
LeddSledd
09.04.20 | Copse didn't seem like much besides a few meandering paths, a couple levers, and a few underground secrets but that's it. and the Skeleton Lords boss seemed a bit shoehorned in |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | I dunno how you're gonna get much of an explanation of the purpose for a lot of the areas in Ds1 while wandering around either beyond "this is a church", "this is a lake", "this is a fortress" etc |
hel9000
09.04.20 | That Gutter video is great btw. Even if it was rushed I love what we got in DS2. |
LeddSledd
09.04.20 | same here. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | "Copse didn't seem like much besides a few meandering paths, a couple levers, and a few underground secrets but that's it. and the Skeleton Lords boss seemed a bit shoehorned in"
?? There is a giant castle, bridges, tunnel systems, weird little squatter huts littered about, another big building, pillars all over, what are u even thinking of
Darkroot garden has.....
A small broken building |
hel9000
09.04.20 | I'm not saying there aren't other locations like that throughout the other games. On the whole DS2 has the most of them though imo. |
LeddSledd
09.04.20 | :/
maybe my memory isn't as good as i thought |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | I'm unconvinced |

Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | What bout it? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | Oh are u just saying there are more things in darkroot?
Yes there is a gravestone a 300 square foot broken building and there is even a puddle actually lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | I love darkroot btw, some of the simplest areas in souls games are the best. |
Colton
09.04.20 | In a series of spooky medieval areas with spooky monsters, which one has the spookiest medieval areas and the spookiest monsters? That is the question |
hel9000
09.04.20 | "Oh are u just saying there are more things in darkroot?"
It's a significant part of the game and it's located in Darkroot yes. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | No-mans wharf is one of the scariest areas in any souls game imo.
Those fucking spider ppl |
hel9000
09.04.20 | They are like little Cloverfield monsters. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | Ok so the big rock saves the empty area from the same criticisms as the other games cuz u visit it twice I guess |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | "They are like little Cloverfield monsters"
Lol kind of hey |
LeddSledd
09.04.20 | Gavlan is the best DS2 NPC change my mind |
hel9000
09.04.20 | Speaking of spooky areas i always loved the pyramid in the Sunken Crown DLC, with the singing and ghosts and all that. Feels truly ancient and forgotten. |
hel9000
09.04.20 | Gavlan ftw |
LeddSledd
09.04.20 | my favorite part of Sunken Crown was the giant lake with the bipedal tooth monsters. not spooky just flat out terrifying with those things lumbering around |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.04.20 | Sunken crown was sick yeah but fuck that boss commute |
hel9000
09.05.20 | oh 100%. That one sticks out as one of the worst, easily. Speaking of which I just put it together that I can spawn at the Dragonslayer's Armour bonfire for Lothric and Lorian so I'm pretty happy about that. |
hel9000
09.05.20 | idk if anything can top Alonne for worst boss commute for me. |
MO
09.05.20 | Just got to Gehrman for the first time. Almost done. It's literally a perfect game, I am loving it |
wutang4ever
09.05.20 | Nice thread! III is so good, but it's rather easy compared to II. II gave me a really hard time, it actually felt like after 80 hours with struggling that that game isn't for me. Bloodborne is my favorite souls game easily. I still haven't completed the first run through, wanted to get all the trophies before I start a New Game+. I've also been playing Nioh 2 quite a bit. Not a souls game but it's really close and they did a fantastic job with it tbqh. I have never completed Dark Souls 1 actually, might load that up sometime soon and dedicate some time to it. |

relatable content but Iron Passage will always be the most fuckawful run |

09.05.20 | I think on ng+4 I might actually force myself to kill ornstein last and get his armour for once.
It just seems so much harder |
wutang4ever
09.05.20 | NG+7 on III, anyone wanna play? Duel? I'll make a deal with you, I'll use only the Washing pole and win 100% of the time. Meet me at Fontaine, pass 111 |

09.05.20 | Always do Ornstein last lol, Smough's moveset is so easy that I feel cheap if I kill him on his own |

09.05.20 | Game is creepy as hell, pretty sure the 5th one had an actual literal schoolgirl panty museum |
wutang4ever
09.05.20 | @jonny I can get you a code, here's the ultimatum. Get Nioh 2. lol |
hel9000
09.05.20 | "It's literally a perfect game, I am loving it"
Aside from performance issues, and having to occasionally farm for blood vials, I think it's perfect too.
The chalice dungeons are boring af but whatever, you can easily ignore those. |
wutang4ever
09.05.20 | No! Those are important! You can get Blood Rocks from those, there's only 1 per playthrough on the story areas, the Chalice Dungeons are crucial to getting Rocks and better weapons/armor inside of them. You can use Echoes to get the items, be prepared when you get to higher level Chalices, have at least 100k blood echoes going in. Trust me. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.20 | Persona 5 is one of my favorite games |
wutang4ever
09.06.20 | Couldn't do it. No female character, pointless to me. Have you played any of the Yakuza games? |
SteakByrnes
09.06.20 | Strange reason but more power to ya. Yakuza series is fun for sure, the last one was really good |
wutang4ever
09.06.20 | I am waiting for the 7th one, Like A Dragon. The turn based aspect is going to be so cool. Like XCOM 2 style. Also, why is that a strange reason to play as a female? That judgement itself is creepy tbqh. |
SteakByrnes
09.06.20 | I just think it's strange to say a game is pointless just because of who you play as lol, don't get how that's creepy at all but whatever |
wutang4ever
09.06.20 | A game like Persona, espeically a decision mode story progression game, should have the ability to play as a female, period. |

09.06.20 | I mean I don't disagree, they could've made a female character pretty easily considering Joker has the personality of a piece of paper lol |

09.06.20 | True Steak. But I honestly don't like or have never liked playing as male characters in any games. I have only always made females. I'm a nutcase I guess lol |

09.06.20 | I always choose female avatars too cuz I'm fucking fabulous |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.06.20 | i almost effortposted a long comment about how persona 5's narrative (as it currently unfolds) with a female protagonist in a japanese setting would have been an even bigger leap of fantasy than one of the main characters being an even talking cat. and then i didn't because most of the reasons for why already get ample exposition in the game as is. dumb af content.

09.09.20 | I absolutely cannot wait for the demon souls master. Game was a little bit before my time, and I had no real way of playing it when I got interested in the series. In general how would you say it compares? Ive heard that the atmosphere in it is amazeballs |

09.09.20 | it's fun |

09.09.20 | I wanted to see if I can run it on RPCS3 (no problems so far btw) and it turned into me doing another run.
It’s awesome, a little rudimentary in some regards but yeah the atmosphere is top notch. There’s a lot of stuff in DeS that they call back to in the other games |

09.09.20 | DeS is just as fun as all of the other Souls games. It has a graphic and sound design that is very typical of games of this period (the first two Assassins Creed games are a bit similar), which helps to lend it great atmosphere, and every soul form NPC has their voice drenched in reverb and echo, which is a cool touch.
It has mostly great stage design and combat, and you could argue that it is the most non-linear game in the series as well, given that the only sections that you have to complete in a set order are the tutorial (which is optional), and the first stage of Boletarian Palace. The healing system definitely pales in comparison to Estus though, and it forces you into situations where you could have to farm for health. You also take what can be a really big hit to your health if you are in soul form, and if you die in human form, it affects tendency which dictates the difficulty and rare item spawn rate of a given stage. It's an incredible game that never got the attention that it deserved after the release of DS1, and I can't wait to see it get some newfound love and attention with the remake. |
DungeonBoy
09.09.20 | Many moons ago I had been playing Demon's Souls for a few days until I had a tragic accident where I was impaled through the genitals with a wrought iron rod. During my recovery I was off work for weeks on a great deal of opioids and my trusty friend Demon's Souls by my side. I grew up with an NES and even then I don't think I had ever played a game so frustratingly rewarding in my entire life, and when I finally beat it I shunned off the entire series until one day my dear friend asked me if I wanted to play a little game called Bloodborne. The rest is history. |

09.10.20 | So does it still work? |
DungeonBoy
09.10.20 | It does! The doctors were really worried it wouldn't. Essentially a dull ended wrought iron rod went through the inside of my thigh and out the top of the base of my unit when I fell on it. The rod was about a centimeter or more in diameter. I was stuck on it until the paramedics came. It was the worst experience of my entire life, but again Demon's Souls was there for me. I was taking handfuls of percocet and playing Demon's Souls exclusively by day. Brings me back. Fun game! |

09.10.20 | I just started DS2 on a friends rec, didn't realise it was looked down on. I'm enjoying it so far.
Haven't played a souls game bar demons ages ago, so getting into it now. Bloodborne sounds cool, might try that next |
