05.04.21 | We're up and running and a pretty average start all said - what debut albums impressed you from 2020? |

05.04.21 | the cover for 6 looks like a book cover |

05.04.21 | I might have put a book up by mistake |

05.04.21 | So the thinking here is I've always felt a good way to judge how legendary a year is for music is check the debut albums - you tend to find years with loads of great new bands tends to be very strong overall. |

05.04.21 | 4 is cheating a bit, isn’t it? |

05.04.21 | sorry had to reorder
Boney - no, a rebranding or solo venture counts as a new artist...but I know what you mean. I'd also have to remove the Jenny Beth - but that feels very much a debut of a new thing. the Matt album less so but that's more due to the style than the idea.
So next year Purple Mountains will count
Otherwise someone's shoddy hardly listened to self released solo debut could stop me counting their full band breakthrough etc |

05.04.21 | 1, 4 &:
Bonny light horseman- s.t.
Ellis - born again
Neptunian maximalism - eons
Nation of language - introduction, presence
Helena deland - someone new (her debut lp)
Not a lot of 2020 debut Lp’s I guess |
DoofDoof
05.04.21 | Lark - the Bonny Light and the Deland I liked, both very close to inclusion. The Neptunian didn't do much for me, not heard the Ellis or Nation of Language though |
DoofDoof
05.04.21 | Lark - quite liked The Nation of Language on first try, the Ellis wasn't really what I'm in the mood for |

05.04.21 | Yeah, I can manage a 10 item list a day though - not too much research required on this series. Might need to check a few extra debut albums from the early 80s, always the time period with the most gaps in my listening.
What year are you thinking you'd rank the best for debuts zak? |
zakalwe
05.04.21 | Has to be 1977 doesn’t it? Early 80s |

05.04.21 | endling :P |

05.04.21 | The first Endling transcends any top 10 list |
theBoneyKing
05.04.21 | Interesting take Doof - I guess my feel is that any new band can count as a debut but a well-established act going solo doesn’t really unless it’s a substantial change in style/direction from previous works. Serpentine Prison while it doesn’t sound quite like any National album sounds pretty much exactly how anyone would expect a Berninger solo album to sound. Like technically it is a solo debut but it feels odd to call it one of the best debuts of the year - you do you though!
Purple Mountains is an edge case - it was basically a solo moniker for Berman and arguably could have been called a Silver Jews album without anybody questioning it. I guess these things can change with retrospect too - had Berman gone on to release a bunch more albums under the name it wouldn’t seem as odd to call it a debut. |
