02.18.22 | ah good call on the screamo, the ones I proposed were Glitch, Footwork, Hardcore EDM, Glitch Hop, and Ghettotech. Glitch is the one I think we need the most though. |

GhandhiLion
02.18.22 | Singer songwriter |
Avagantamos
02.18.22 | I feel like deep house would open a pandora's box of necessitating all the other house/techno styles, not that that's a bad thing though |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | I think Trap is a good add, idk if Drill is up there tho. |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | Definitely Garage vs Garage Rock, if not just for the confusion of garage house/uk garage with garage rock bands.
Not at all opposed to adding more distinct edm subgenres, but I think we should handle glaring issues before getting to things like deep house. |
GhandhiLion
02.18.22 | No glitch is better than if there was glitch because most people will misuse it. Just use experimental instead :^] |
ArsMoriendi
02.18.22 | Agreed with all of Johnny's minus Singer/Songwriter
Also:
Baroque pop
Noise Pop
Progressive Pop |
Avagantamos
02.18.22 | not sure if that was sarcasm ghandi, but glitch should be replacing a lot of the mistagged "experimental" |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | "No glitch is better than if there was glitch because most people will misuse it. Just use experimental instead :^]"
tbh this.
"Noise Pop
Progressive Pop"
disagree that these are high priority tbh tbh. prop pop gets hella mistagged too. |
ArsMoriendi
02.18.22 | Baroque pop is at least a necessity since there's so much of it and all of the artists on Sputnik don't reflect it in their tags cuz tagging a pop, rock, or folk artist "classical" because they're baroque pop doesn't work at all |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | My issue with synthpop is that, it + electropop and dance-pop are all clearly distinct and culturally very important, but that the majority of those that do one of them will also do the others as well.
So, I'm not so sure how to handle that. Idk if adding all of them is necessary but if you add one, then I think you should add all 3. |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.18.22 | if there are any further pop tags, they should be Chamber Pop and Synthpop in that order
might vote for chamber pop tbh |
ArsMoriendi
02.18.22 | Chamber pop is a subgenre of baroque pop, so hard disagreed
Synthpop is potentially the most needed tag, so yes |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | Baroque pop > chamber pop imo.
Synthpop is more important than dance and electropop.
"Dream pop encapsulates chamber pop pretty well imo. Maybe i just don’t listen to enough of the stuff"
Disagree on this. But chamber pop could be handled with "baroque pop + indie pop" |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | "And i can’t remember the last time i saw a synth pop record bumped around here lol"
Almost every mainstream + mainstream adjacent pop artist right now is making synthpop. (It's annoying!) Most of them are not huge on sput tho. |
GhandhiLion
02.18.22 | Chamber pop is not a subgenre of baroque pop |

02.18.22 | New Wave is possibly the most needed just to get rid of all the bands wrongly tagged with post punk |
Avagantamos
02.18.22 | ^^^ agreed on all except for compositional ambient |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.18.22 | baroque pop was a (partial) *parent genre for chamber pop but is more dated and less encompassing
chamber pop and dream pop have a load of points of distinction and exist outside of each other more often than not probably. a load of the most acclaimed pop records from recent years have all been rooted in chamber pop. chamber pop is one of the least ambiguous genres to tag and also applicable to one of the widest range of decades
and there is literally a synthpop album on the features tab rn |
Purpl3Spartan
02.18.22 | 21. post-post-hardcore |
GhandhiLion
02.18.22 | "chamber pop is one of the least ambiguous genres to tag"

i think i have a very good idea of what baroque pop is, but less so for chamber pop. |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | some side notes: why is there a melodeath tag but no meloblack? is meloblack even that big a genre?
and why is there a folk punk tag but no folk rock? idk sput LOVES their folk punk but still?
also, should nu-metal be replaced with alt-metal? or should we just have both? idk enough about those 2 to say. |

Avagantamos
02.18.22 | thoughts on regional hip hop tags? I personally don't think the styles developed on the east and west coast were consistent enough with each other to warrant tags for the coasts, however I think Memphis rap does have a very distinct sound. |

02.18.22 | Instrumental in general could be good, like soundtracks. Singer songwriter has a better claim than most tags tbh. |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | Some sort of traditional folk or world music is needed imo. “Folk” covers an insane range atm. Especially if you include singer songwriter in folk rn. |
AlexKzillion
02.18.22 | djent |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.18.22 | chamber pop = contemporary pop / indie pop songwriting with traditional "chamber" arrangements that typically gravitate towards intimate performance styles as opposed to large scale orchestration
baroque pop = has a specific basis in classical traditions and in current usage basically refers to records in dialogue with its 60s/70s heyday (see the year distribution on the rym listing https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/baroque-pop/)
chamber pop is the vaguer of the two because it is more alive and more contingent on who plays it and therefore more useful for this website of vague expedient tags |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.18.22 | "traditional folk or world music is needed imo"
uh yes. klezmer, bossa nova, samba where r u
djent is priority 0, we do not need subgenres for prog metal |

Slowcore
Screamo
Noise
Art-pop, synth-pop, chamber pop, glitch pop etc. (as there's currently just 'pop' lol)
Djent (even though it sucks)
Disco or Dance? seems essential
Plunderphonics
Jungle
Musique Concrete
UK Garage
Vaporwave or just 'Vapor'
idk probably loads of stuff, I mean House alone has a ton of sub-genres (for instance) but considering we already have a House tag I wouldn't know where to start. Let's dream small for now, lol
this isn't a real vote, right? |
Trifolium
02.18.22 | 3!!!!!!!!!!! |
Demon of the Fall
02.18.22 | hang on, New Wave isn't even a tag? Oh boy
thinking of going with New Wave, Disco and Slowcore + 2 more... maybe Screamo as well actually because it's currently hard to define with the current tags (as 'emo' means something very different).
this is tough, will have to give it some thought |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.18.22 | "Djent (even though it sucks)"
rly |
Demon of the Fall

Sinternet
02.18.22 | capitalise the F in Lo-fi and M in Nu-metal on the genre list seriously this sets me off so bad every time I see it
honestly we need way more than 5 genres added so im gonna dump a list below sorted by priority
Highest Priority (these are necessities that either represent artists who are currently mistagged or genres that are big and stylistically diverse enough they should be represented):
Noise
Krautrock
Slowcore
New Wave
Garage Rock
Glam Rock
Singer/Songwriter
Tech House
Deep House
Trap
Screamo
Disco
Synthpop
Deathcore
Medium Priority (these represent genres that could just about be tagged using the current system but could use the separation and/or would encompass a fair amount ofartists):
Shibuya Kei
Acid House
Twee Pop
Noise Pop
Emoviolence
Jangle Pop
Electro House
Crust Punk
Powerviolence
Dub
Jungle
Southern Rock
Surf Rock/Surf
Glitch
Instrumental Hip-Hop
Progressive Electronic
Electropop
EBM
Electro
Alt-Country
Symphonic Metal
Bossa Nova
Chamber Pop
Boom Bap
Emo Rap
Drill
Mathcore
Folk Metal
Vaporwave
Power Pop
G-Funk
Cloud Rap
Gangsta Rap
Blackgaze
Lesser Priority (these are nice-to-have's that would differentiate a few styles):
Klezmer
No Wave
Dance-Punk
Riot Grrrl
Queercore
Progressive Pop
Neo-Soul
Comedy
Religious
Easy Listening
Ska Punk
Cabaret
Funeral Doom
Chillwave
Field Recordings
Eurodance
Stoner Metal
Big Band
Spoken Word
Poetry |
Sinternet
02.18.22 | Potentially Useful (tags that would differentiate a lot of artists but have the potential to be misused):
Art Pop (massive potential for mistagging, but can potentially provide a distinction between pop artists with more or less commercial ambition/degrees of experimentation within the pop microcosm)
Alt/Alternative Metal (same issues as art pop re: mistagging, but does describe bands like deftones better than nu metal)
EDM (controversial and horrible term, but would separate more commercial electronic styles from more underground styles, eg: Skrillex and Burial both being tagged Dubstep, Martin Garrix and Nicolas Jaar both tagged as house etc.
Avant-Garde (again could be misused but potentially useful for a lot of experimental/prog/folk artists)
Traditional (massive missing tag in the form of 'world music', bowever that term has certain negative connotations, traditional would both avoid that term and be useful for traditional Western folk music as well, just nuke anyone who tries to tag things as traditional doom metal)
Regional Hip-Hop (Southern/West Coast/East Coast/UK/Memphis Rap etc., might be more hassle than its worth, but useful in a way because of distinct sounds)
Rock & Roll (to separate things like Presley and Bing Crosby from more modern styles, could be misused)
Psychedelic Rock/Folk (may be useful to separate the psychedelic tag, but not a huge issue)
Other notes:
Garage Rock is massively needed so people stop confusing it with the current garage tag which is for the electronic genre
Hardcore is in a similar but lesser vein where the current tag is representing the Punk subgenre but the electronic genre also gets tagged under this, suggest renaming current genre to Hardcore Punk and potentially adding a Hardcore (Electronic) genre
Breaks could be renamed to Breakbeat, which is a more encompassing term for a variety of break-based styles
Djent would be useful to separate boomer prog metal with scene kid prog metal
Jam Rock should be renamed to Jam Band as the styles these artists play is not exclusively rock-centric all the time |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.18.22 | ^can you post this in meds plz |
Demon of the Fall
02.18.22 | cool list
Q: couldn't deathcore be categorised as death metal / metalcore on the same artist page, or did you not take that into consideration? It SHOULD absolutely be a tag, just thinking of priorities etc. as I doubt we'll even get to add the whole first tier here. |
Cimnele
02.18.22 | "ineffable" genre tag |
Sinternet
02.18.22 | will do johnny, cheers for the help witt the list
demon it can but as a genre I feel its large and diverse enough from either the death metal or metalcore genres that a distinction would be really useful. plus ive seen people get annoyed in the past when deathcore artists appear on the death metal page |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.18.22 | was mostly you m'dude, but np - hope it chows down some mileage |
Tundra
02.18.22 | Why does hip hop of all things get the privilege of having instrumental tag? If that where the case it would open the floodgates for stuff like instrumental math rock, post rock etc |
Sinternet
02.18.22 | because instrumental hip-hop is a massively diverse and representative tag that goes beyond just beats with no rappers on and is a radically different approach to a genre that has since its inception been vocal-driven, whereas instrumental other genres is just not having a vocalist and not a massively different approach from non-instrumental artists |
dedex
02.18.22 | thanks Sint for the thorough specs needs |
Tundra
02.18.22 | I watched Straight Outta Compton and that's the extent of my knowledge of ye' old hip hop lol |
Demon of the Fall
02.18.22 | yeah I get you Sint, it really COULD do with being it's own tag... think I'm just thinking of priorities here, as it doesn't sound like we're getting more than 5 new tags (for now)?! I think for the time being we could make do without, if we must.
I do think it belongs in that top tier and fair play for demanding more!
Good call on hip-hop as well, they are almost entirely different beasts from what I understand. I'm by no means an expert here, but I do dig some of the instrumental stuff despite not being particularly enamoured with the vocal-orientated kind. Always felt that way to me. |
Havey
02.18.22 | dunno why you think we're getting 5 genres, the 5 picks per user limit just exists to stop people from going full sint mode |
Sinternet
02.18.22 | idk that sounds pretty rad to me |
Demon of the Fall
02.18.22 | I guess... well if we get more than 5 (or any) I'll be shocked, in a good way |

theBoneyKing
02.18.22 | Are they only going to add 5, or is just that we only get 5 votes? Limiting the number of votes is good because it ensures people will take it seriously, but I don’t see why they can’t just add like 30 since I imagine there will be a decent range rather than a few overwhelming winners anyways, and as outdated as this site is I wouldn’t think genre tags would be the thing to break it. Not saying we need to be RYM but adding only 5 tags doesn’t really do much to fix the problem. |
GhandhiLion
02.18.22 | I don't think that Krautrock is high priority because psychedelic covers most of it.
psych would need more subgenres in future tho. |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | I just went with 5 because I didn’t wanna be a bother lol. I was going off the idea that some things only let u submit one of those survey things. Which is prob not the case here.
I also don’t think kraut is a high priority. |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | Most likely, you could submit however many times you want. I’ll prob do like 25-35 at the end. Don’t rly wanna do more than that. |
