| COD Zombies games ranked
As the holiday season approaches, I've been playing the most festive game imaginable... COD Zombies! Yeah, this is just a little list for fun, using my favorite albums for my favorite games, and my least favorite for my least favorite, you get the idea.
Oh, also, non-Treyarch Zombies are included here! MWIII is not, just because I haven't played it or seen any of it. | 10 | | Panic! at the Disco Viva Las Vengeance
Vanguard Zombies
Surprising probably nobody, Vanguard's heaping pile of garbage lands at the bottom. I shouldn't even have to explain this one. Between the two maps that are literally just neutered Outbreak, the bevy of missing shit at launch, and more unnecessary changes to core mechanics of Zombies, nothing about this game worked. To the depths it goes, hopefully like the rest of this fucking game. | 9 | | Deco*27 Mannequin
Advanced Warfare
I don't hate AW like I hate Vanguard, but I sure as hell don't like it either. Exosuits in Zombies sounds fun on paper, but in practice, there's a lot wrong with this game. Tedious easter egg quests, one of the worst Zombies maps of all time (Infection), and some of the most annoying special zombies in history (fuck the EMZs, fuck the weird infected zombies that force you to run to bum fuck nowhere). A good story and a great cast does not save this game. | 8 | | Rush Rush
World at War
I'm gonna catch some shit for putting WAW as low as I did, but the reality is that this game is far more barebones compared to what we'd get. This is about the safest Zombies game now, though it was super ambitious at the time (mostly because it was the first damn installment). All 4 of the maps here are included on better games with better hardware and better mechanics. Aside from nostalgia, I see no reason to return here for a Zombies fix. | 7 | | Soul Extract Filaments
WWII
One of the best aesthetics in any Zombies game to date. The body horror and grotesque elements are some of the best parts of this game, and The Final Reich is genuinely a great map. Shame that the rest of the maps are mostly forgettable, with The Darkest Shore just being annoying thanks to the fucking fog. A great amount of potential, but a final product that was unable to deliver. | 6 | | I Prevail TRAUMA
BO4
Perhaps the most inconsistent of the Treyarch Zombies games. I'm mixed on this one, because I genuinely love some of the maps, like IX, Classified, Ancient Evil, and even Alpha Omega, but there are just as many that I don't like, and the changes to core mechanics like perks and Pack-a-Punch, combined with horrific zombie spawns and a boring-ish new story, and you've got a disappointing guilty pleasure of a Zombies game. | 5 | | Fall Out Boy So Much (For) Stardust
Black Ops
Here's where the games start getting genuinely good. BO1's color palate may be washed as fuck, but the maps here are classic, though still a little too simplistic (Moon and Shangri-La aside) to elevate this entry much higher. Again, remasters of a lot of these maps exist on better hardware, though unlike WAW, I can see people wanting to return to BO1. | 4 | | Coheed and Cambria Vaxis II: A Window of the Waking Mind
Infinite Warfare
If people weren't mad at me before, they probably will be now. Beast from Beyond aside (fuck that map), IW is a shockingly consistent and fun Zombies entry, and probably the most underrated game in the entire Zombies franchise. Seriously, why do people hate this so much? Zombies in Spaceland is a top 10 map for me, and while the other maps don't reach the same heights, they still are a blast of a good time. The aesthetics and cheesy B-movie vibe are top notch, and the Director's Cut was a great addition to the game, not to mention the superboss at the end (shame you have to beat Beast to get there). I still redownload IW every so often just to play Zombies, it's that much fun.
That being said, fuck the Radioactive Thing Easter Egg. | 3 | | Tallah The Generation of Danger
BO2
2 of the best Zombies maps in history, tempered by 2 of the absolute worst, with a couple of solid ones thrown in for good measure. It's in contention with BO4 for the most inconsistent Zombies game quality-wise. Unlike BO4, however, the mechanics are much better, and the addition of modes like Grief and Turned provide a good shake-up to the usual Zombies formula, albeit one that never really popped up again. | 2 | | Silent Planet Superbloom
Cold War
Hot take, but I genuinely think this is better than BO2, all because of one word: consistency. Cold War Zombies is the most consistent entry in the franchise with the exception of my number 1 that everyone already guessed most likely. After BO4's disappointment, Cold War came out swinging with a grand return to truly classic Zombies, with a couple updates that changed the game for the better. Perks are back, the loadout system is surprisingly not broken, the armor system is fantastic, as are the upgrades, and the maps are all relatively solid and enjoyable in their own right. Outbreak and Onslaught are also great diversions from the main action. I genuinely enjoy this entry a shit ton, and I think it's probably the best model for Zombies going forward. | 1 | | Rush Clockwork Angels
BO3
Of fucking course this would be my number 1. How could it not? One of the most solid engines as a base, some of the best Zombies maps in history, not a single dud outside of mayyybe Zetsubou no Shima or Revelations (and even those maps are pretty damn good), one of the best storylines in a Zombies game, fantastic weapons, fantastic Easter Eggs, remasters aplenty, this game literally has it all. It was so damn good that Treyarch kept adding shit to it even after BO3's yearly cycle was over. That's how incredible this game was. | |

12.05.23 | Hopefully the new Black Ops game in 2024 will follow in Cold War Zombies' footsteps, and not Vanguard's | AlexKzillion
12.05.23 | as someone who has not touched a cod game since bo2 i am utterly shocked there are this many games with zombies now | AnimalForce1
12.05.23 | They're everywhere. And there's, like, a million more maps made by the community because BO3 can be modded to hell and back now | AnimalForce1
12.05.23 | I didn't factor that into my ratings because they're not official, but BO3's modding community is insane. Some of the custom maps are Treyarch-level good (the Treyarch that made BO3 and Mob and Origins, not the Treyarch that made Vanguard) | Tundra
12.05.23 | I no longer give a shit about zombies, it's an easy af gamemode where all have to do is walk in a circle to win after you acquire all needed resources before hand. It just turns into a resource gathering quest and the easter eggs introduced drives that notion home the most. Still, my favorite is probably bo1, fond memories playing with my friends | AlexKzillion
12.05.23 | lmao yeah kinda agree with that... getting "good" at zombies kinda ruins the enjoyment. i remember one time just casually getting to like round 70 on ascension and turning off my xbox out of boredom. also remember buried or burial or whatever and that high rise map being a ridiculously easy too (and the last ones i remember playing upon release).
i assume they've spiced it up a lot since then, googled "best zombie maps ever" and i don't even recognize most of these | AnimalForce1
12.05.23 | Okay, to be fair, Ascension and Buried are two of the easiest Zombies maps in history lol
BO3 onwards definitely can become a bit more fetch-questy, but some of the high rounds can be an absolute blast | Tundra
12.05.23 | @Alex oh yeah, like most things, the discovery phase is the most enjoyable, I wont deny my first couple years playing the games I had a blast doing so | AnimalForce1
12.05.23 | If the discovery phase is the most enjoyable, BO3 Zombies might be the way to go just because of the mods. Unless discovery refers more to discovering the series as a whole | Tundra
12.05.23 | Meant as a whole, I've played most of them but slowed around bo4 and played just the first map of cold war | YoYoMancuso
12.05.23 | Shadows of Evil and Mob of the Dead forever best maps | JayEnder
12.05.23 | OG BO1 zombies will always reign supreme. Will never forget firing up Kino for the first time and being genuinely terrified lol. Then came a multiple year long addiction to cod, getting home from school and playing with my bros was the highlight of my life at the time. | bellovddd
12.05.23 | The house level in world at war still the GOAT level | Purpl3Spartan
12.05.23 | 5 is 1
7 is generally underrated imo although not perfect | Emim
12.05.23 | Blops 2 on top for me | Feather
12.05.23 | Didn't play much at all beyond W@W zombies and it was absolutely electric at the time. Happy to hear how well the game has apparently continued to thrive.
I remember TDWP released their zombie ep when world at war was hot and had some amazing times bumping it while playing der riese. | AnimalForce1
12.05.23 | Oh my god, playing the Zombie EP while playing Nacht or Der Riese sounds insanely fun! | Feather
12.05.23 | and they had just been released.. absolutely wild time haha
I am unfortunately old and have too much going on to commit to an hour+ of straight gaming so I don't think I can play zombies much anymore, but am considering getting a new cod for nostalgias sake because I can certainly play a few 10 min rounds | AnimalForce1
12.05.23 | Oh man, you were living during the heyday! | Feather
12.05.23 | I am so intrigued though by how much I am sure the zombies franchise has grown though. might watch some videos just to see how wild it has gotten | Emim
12.05.23 | I did a high round attempt (well high round for me lol) on Town from bo2 and it took the better part of two hours | AnimalForce1
12.05.23 | "might watch some videos just to see how wild it has gotten"
You aren't ready. If you thought the Ray Gun was as crazy as it gets, wait til you see some of the shit on BO3 and beyond | Feather
12.05.23 | The craziest things got back in the day was an upgraded wunderwaffle and monkey bombs lol | Sinternet
12.05.23 | world at war is literally the only good one | AnimalForce1
12.05.23 | Cap and a half Sin
"The craziest things got back in the day was an upgraded wunderwaffle and monkey bombs lol"
Oh you need to see the Wonder Weapon for Shadows of Evil LMAO | AsleepInTheBack
12.05.23 | Well I need to play BO3 then. Dropped out after BO2. World at War and BO1 were always my faves. | AnimalForce1
12.05.23 | BO3's definitely a lot more complex in a lot of areas than BO1, a lot more to collect, a lot more secret quests to do.
I'd recommend buying the Zombie Chronicles DLC. A ton of BO1 and WaW maps (plus one BO2 map) remastered. Worth every cent | AsleepInTheBack
12.06.23 | Thing is I loved the simplicity of a Kino der Toten. All the Easter eggs and side thingys hurt my smol brain. | AnimalForce1
12.06.23 | I love it. Maybe it's because I'm a sucker for hidden things and being rewarded for finding the hidden things, but I love going for Wonder Weapons and things like that | Hendoi
12.08.23 | Zombies peaked at verrukt |
