the omen movies ranked

despite being a huge horror fan i had never seen the omen. with the new one coming out i decided to watch them all. not as bad of a franchise as i thought it might be. far from great but mostly entertaining.

omen iv: the awakening

this is one of the worst horror movies i've seen with a franchise/budget behind it. you ever want to see a really bad tv movie version of the omen with a looney tunes soundtrack underscoring kills and dramatic moments? very spotty acting and just a retelling of the original story. hilarious kill with a wrecking ball but this isn't funny bad this is boring bad.

the omen (2006)

far from the worst thing ever made but it's a near shot for shot remake with a majority of the same lines. what is there to say? pretty solid cast doing what they can except the kid who looks way too evil from the start. i don't think i will ever feel the need to watch this again. bonus point for releasing on 6/6/06.

the final conflict

great premise, alright execution. sam neill is perfectly cast as adult damien and has a ton of fun in the role. worth watching for him alone talking about satan to a statue of jesus. i liked the political thriller aspects of it which differ it from the others along with a small sect of monks attempting to stop him while following the rebirth of jesus. pretty horrific moments with infant murder which was pretty surprising to see. a bit anticlimactic ending but if you want a political antichrist movie give it a watch.

damien: omen ii

a surprisingly very fun slasher flavored sequel. there are a couple of really good kills one involving an elevator. solid child performance from now 12 year old damien. cool seeing more of the antichrist's helpers and seeing their work behind the scenes orchestrating his rise to power. a bit repetitive but the ending wraps up nicely. a fun time.

the first omen

i think everyone had really low expectations for this especially with a late review embargo. definitely surprised me, just a really solid, slow-burn movie with little jump scares. a very strong cast especially the lead nell tiger free. they found a way to somehow tell a prequel that didn't answer questions we weren't asking. some of it is of course a little perfunctory to fit the timeline but mostly it fits well with the original film without overbearing references to the original. there is some truly great body horror and imagery in here. i do wish there were more "omens" though and it does take a little to get going. give it a watch when it comes to streaming.

the omen (1976)

not quite the all-time classic that some people think but a truly great movie that holds up well. there's something about horror from the 70's that just hits different. love that deliberate pacing and long takes that build a strong atmosphere. great directing from richard donner. really think peck's traditional style of acting lends itself to this movie greatly. an all time score and theme from jerry goldsmith. damien is great of course as a kid but mrs. baylock is an amazing secondary villain. great slow build to peck finally realizing his son is the antichrist which is just great material. a few great kills especially for 1976. a disturbing great finale with one of the best final shots in a film ever. the only thing lacking for me is character work, you don't get enough of the thorn's to get to know them before bad things happen. it's not the exorcist (one of the best movies ever made) but a great religious horror movie.
