Slayer slayed
The third of the Big 4 discographies ranked. I won't be doing Anthrax. |
1 | | Slayer Show No Mercy
The most interesting and varied Slayer album. Each song has different tempos and contrasting parts backed up by memorable solos and an awesome mix. You can hear the Maiden influence late in the album. All up an incredible debut. They would never write a song like Metal Storm / Face the Slayer again.

2 | | Slayer Divine Intervention
A blistering return from the boys. They’ve still got the sicko lyrics but this sounds truly vicious, assisted by the muscular mix of the guitars and the precision drumming by Paul Bostaph. To me these are better songs that on their previous 3 albums and just sounds better, more powerful - influenced by the other big metal bands att in this regard.

3 | | Slayer Reign in Blood
They wanted to be the fastest and they achieved that. Big step up from hell awaits but when you boil down every song, which ones are truly classic - I’d say 3 - Angel of death, Altar of sacrifice and Raining blood. And at a pinch Postmortem. “It’s so extreme and non-musical,” said Rick Rubin. Beloved by metal fans everywhere except a few of us.

4 | | Slayer South of Heaven
On the same level as Reign in blood. For me the t/t and Mandatory suicide are classic of course and the riffs in Silent scream, Ghosts of war and Read between the lines are pretty sweet but Araya’s vocals are so weak and it’s all a bit samey. Compare song for song with AJFA and Justice wins every one hands down.

5 | | Slayer Seasons in the Abyss
If there was ever an album that was just more of the same it’s this. Nothing new on here that they hadn’t previously done. The t/t is such an obvious ripoff of Mandatory suicide its bizarre. I can obviously appreciate a metalhead lapping it up at the time but I didn’t when I started and don’t get the hype on this one.

6 | | Slayer God Hates Us All
The beginning of Slayer’s second career and the sound they will retain for the next 20 years. I find Disciple and other songs grating mainly because of Araya’s strained vocals but always dug New Faith and Cast down

7 | | Slayer Repentless
Repentless is the best Slayer song since New Faith. There’s some good parts in When the Stillness Comes and Piano Wire and the rest is not bad but bordering on self parody.

8 | | Slayer Christ Illusion
The singing is much better than God hates us all but its still boring. For fans only but can vouch for Catatonic and Black Serenade

9 | | Slayer Hell Awaits
Never ceases to amaze me how boring this is. Doesn’t hold a candle to the debut

10 | | Slayer Diabolus in Musica
Gotta give some leeway to Slayer for this one as it was at a confusing time for the big 4 and other 80’s pioneers. It’s not bad just devoid of memorability.

11 | | Slayer World Painted Blood
Yawn inducing more of the same

12 | | Slayer Undisputed Attitude
Not really a Slayer album with only 3 original songs
