However shaky the future of this band may be, it is difficult to dispute the impassioned performance Brennan Taulbee gives on 'Birth.Eater'. Whether it be the unique theme that surrounds the album, or his refreshing mid-range dryness, Oceana seems to recognize his strength given their genre shift on their new EP. | | 4 |  | Dead Letter Circus
This is the Warning
Some hate Kim Benzie's higher range and call him derivative, and some of his lyrics are questionable, but he definitely has one of the fresher voices in new prog imo. | | 3 |  | Karnivool
Sound Awake
Though they're already 2.5 albums deep, Karnivool admits 'Sound Awake' is the first they've really written together. In any progressive band with songs this long, it is essential the vocals shine, and in the case of Ian Kenny, they soar. "Dead Man" and "Changes Pt. 2" should be plenty to convince you, with the latter's end vocal hook being the most infectious of the year imo. | | 2 |  | Eye Alaska
Yellow and Elephant
Brandon Wronski has one of the most soulful voices in rock, melding an R&B style that imo trumps Craig. The lyrics on their full LP are problematic though, and it's peppered with vocal corniness. Barring that lyrical rut, he has some of the best vocals in recent memory. | | 1 |  | Fair to Midland
Fables from a Mayfly
Pull up any YouTube video of Fair to Midland and you'll see the energy that Darroh Sudderth contributes to any of his performances. An incredibly diverse vocalist, Sudderth shifts from a growls on "Dance of the Manatee" to staggering range on songs like "Walls of Jericho". Serious understatement to say their next album is hotly anticipated. | |

07.09.10 | Ah, you contradict yourself in 4. You say some people find him derivative (i.e unoriginal) then you say that he definitely has one of the fresher (i.e original) voices in new prog. How can some people find him derivative when he's definitely not?
Having said that, I don't mind him. He's not my favourite vocalist but he's still good.

One that I forgot to add to that list is a band called Suns Of The Tundra. They used to be called Peach and Justin Chancellor was their bassist before Tool. |
