| Hey, Help Me Out Here.
So, I want to start an ambient project, just for the fun of it... I've wanted to for awhile, but have never gotten around to it... I'm planning on just using my old piano and some audio samples of like conversations etc... How do I go about this, as in, what programs/ recording equipment should I look into?
List is ambient digs. | 1 | | Rooftop Access Reals and Dreamity
Wrote a review for this at 1 AM last night, I highly recommend this album. | 2 | | Stars of the Lid Avec Laudenum
How can you not love Stars of the Lid? | 3 | | Tad Piecka Stars are Stars and Yours are Yours
Maybe not entirely ambient, but incredible acoustic guitar, and nothing else. It's beautiful. | |

03.27.11 | Need help, por favor. I've googled stuff on this, thought about making my own reverb modifier for awhile, but figured that it would just be a waste of time... I can't find any details about what is needed to make ambient music though. | UnnamedOcean
03.27.11 | My friend is using Ableton, which is apparently pretty good. Although the best option I think would be to get pro tools and a compatible interface to record with. | North0House2
03.27.11 | Okay, cool... So I might just want to hit Guitar Center and pick up some recording equipment and then mix it in one of those programs, right? | acorncheese
03.27.11 | I also have a friend who's using Ableton. You can ask him about it in shoutbox - MaskAtTheMasquerade | UnnamedOcean
03.27.11 | Yeah, I think Ableton would be best in your situation. Pro tools is great, but only the newest version works with third party interfaces. Plus it's hella expensive. Ableton has plenty of effects to use and whatnot. Since it sounds like you just want to record your piano, an interface should be the main thing you need. Is it an old electric piano or an actual acoustic piano? | Josh D.
03.27.11 | Can't find album versions of 3 on YouTube, I want to hear it. | North0House2
03.27.11 | Alright, awesome, thanks... Yeah, I don't wanna spend tons of money since I'm hurting in that department at the moment lol. I'll check out Ableton...
And UnnamedOcean: It's an electric, but can't be hooked up to a computer... I'm gonna go but a cheap upright off of Craigslist soon though. Yeah, I'm thinking an interface is the most important at the moment.

It sounds basically like that, just a little better quality. | UnnamedOcean
03.27.11 | Yeah if you can figure out how to hook it up, that would be good. If not, make sure you get a great microphone for recording an upright. You can probably do with a small 2 or 3 input interface, but a good microphone is a necessity for recording anything acoustic. | North0House2
03.27.11 | Yeah, definitely... I've owned it for 10 years now, so I know all the hook ups on the thing, and I'm fairly certain that it does not have a hook up jack, it only has jacks for microphones and headphones...
Definitely, I was already assuming I'd get a nice mic and mount it on the top of the upright, then hook it up to my computer from there. |
