| 12 Best Japanese Bands
Hey motherfuckers on Sputnik! I'm back, and I'm rhere with 12 of the rbest Japanese bands. Peel your eyes open and be ramazed with rsome fucked up, weird, but ultimately awesome rJapanese music! | 1 | Boredoms
Of course the list has to start out with one of the most loudest,
spontaneous, and influential bands from Japan of the 90s: BOREDOMS.
Having collaborated with various experimental artists through the years,
such as John Zorn and Sonic Youth, they have formed a concoction of
experimentation, loudness and all around, a memorable experience. Not for
the weak of heart. | 2 | Malice Mizer
Another influential band, however, for much more different reasons: MALICE
MIZER. These guys helped skyrocket the visual kei movement to the top of
the market, and had a unique music formula, combined with remarkable
artistic talent and stage shows. Although the split up a decade ago, their
music lives on, and their legacy keeps getting bigger and bigger. | 3 | New Rote'ka
Although not very well known in the United States (or anywhere else for
that matter), these guys helped pioneer punk in Japan and created a new
wave of punk in their area: NEW ROTE'KA. These guys are known for their
energetic shows, uplifting music and small, yet significant fan base.
Recommended for those who are fans of punk, with a sprinkle of ska and a
fan of a clown who bounces on his own testicles in efforts to outrun his
bandmates (see the "...TO BE HARLEM" music video.) | 4 | Inugami Circus-dan
One of the most controversial, and picture perfect examples of modern
visual kei music: INUGAMI CIRCUS-DAN. These guys are known for their wild
costumes, fucked up song topics (such as rape, molestation, and incest),
and overall undeniable presence in the Japanese indie scene today.
Inugami Circus-dan are arguably one of the most daring and bold acts
Japan has to offer today. | 5 | OOIOO
One of many Boredoms side-projects, OOIOO are Boredoms' member
Yoshimi P-we's own project. Combining jungle like rhythmics, with
spontaneous and random outbursts that Boredoms are known for, OOIOO
are once again STRICTLY ONLY for people that enjoy experimenting with
various music styles, and people with a open mind. | 6 | Sigh
SIGH is one of Japan's only black metal bands that I'm aware of, and arguably,
one of the best in that genre today. Originally signing onto
Mayhem member's Euronymous's label back in the early 90s, then moving
on once he was killed--- but we all know that story. Sigh have now proven
themselves as one of the most successful independent black metal bands in
the scene today. | 7 | The Gerogerigegege
You know how I said that Boredoms and OOIOO are strictly for people with
an open mind? Well, needless to say, Japan's own noise group THE
GEROGERIGEGEGE are in their own world, and it's probably better off if they
stay in it. The Gerogerigegege will probably go on as one of the world's
best kept secrets, and fans of noise will know who they are. If you do not
know who they are, be warned. Their music features tons of elements of
harsh noise, perverted/homoerotic album covers, and a very stimulated
style of music, designed for a very limited audience. NOT FOR ANYONE PAST
THE AGE OF 65. | 8 | Cali Gari
Ahh yes. Offensive, sexual shows, bizarre and captivating music. All the
elements to make a great band. CALI GARI are often called the fathers of
ero-guro music, which is music that targets erotic behaviors. Indie? Yes. But
their music is too damn influential and weird to simply be ignored. | 9 | Morning Musume
Now, before you flame me, know this: MORNING MUSUME are the most
successful Japanese pop bands in music history, all of their singles have
charted the Oricon top 20 and helped pioneer the current state of Japanese
music today. Okay, now flame away. | 10 | The Pillows
Dude, FLCL. Enough said. | 11 | Melt Banana
God, I feel like such a dick for forgetting them! Damnit! Anyways, they're here
now, and I feel better! Anyways, what to say about Melt Banana that hasn't
already been said? Well, they are the kings/queen of noise punk, and make music
to make you kick teeth in, even when you're getting surgery done on you.
Wonderful, balls-to-the-wall punk, mixed in with noise rock, just like how mama
used to make it! | 12 | Schwarz Stein
SCHWARZ STEIN consists of flamboyant singer KAYA and producer HORA.
Founded by visual kei legend MANA after Malice Mizer broke up, he quickly
signed them onto his label in the early 2000s. After only releasing two
albums, and only a handful of singles, they broke up due to musical
differences. Their music combined darkwave with a more electronic kick.
Definitely recommended to electronica fans. | |
