| Round 8: Inverted Umbrella Competition
2 are out and 7 are still in. No lateness disqualification this time! Yay! The new deadline to get your round 2 songs in is 5pm EST on December 17th! THIS WILL BE THE LAST ROUND WITH DOUBLE ELIMINATIONS, the final 5 will be single eliminations starting round 9 | 1 | | The Kinks The Village Green Preservation Society
1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.
2. This round is [Baroque Pop]. Popular music led with orchestral instruments. Violins, flutes, timpani, trombones, cellos, clarinets, bassoons! I'll allow chamber pop and orchestral pop, but I'll warn you: a stripped-down vocalist+piano combo with not much else will not fare well. Think BIG!
3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.
4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.
5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)
***Winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's possible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.*** | 2 | | Royal Trux Twin Infinitives
GhandhiLion: “(Edge of The) Ape Oven"
Avant-garde piano and what sounds like an accordion, hmmm. It’s a vibe to say the least. I like it, but I wonder how much of this is just random sprawling improv and how much of this was thought out. 5 mins 57 seconds in and my brain is starting to make sense of this. It’s repetitive but also not, it’s chaotic, but also chill. Contradictions are cool. This is good, but it’s still missing that oomph that my favoite noise rock tends to have.
3.8/5 (SAFE) | 3 | | Daisy Chainsaw Eleventeen
SlothcoreSam: “I Feel Isane”
Whoa, I like these vocals. Poppy structure, but fucked up timbres. Riot grrrrl if they mumbled and howled more. Simple, but vey effective!
4.5/5 (SAFE) | 4 | | The Drones Here Come the Lies
Porcupinetheater: “The Cockeyed Lowlife of the Highlands”
The vocals are okay, but the noise is good. Jesus Lizard influenced? Simple enough and… oh a fakeout ending, okay.
3.9/5 (SAFE) | 5 | | Today Is the Day Willpower
CugnoBrasso: “First Knife”
Super bad vocals, good riff. What a conflict. Okay, the section half’s vocals are better. The guitar really clashes in a good way. I forgive the opening a little because the rest of it ruled.
3.6/5 (SAFE) | 6 | | Low Hey What
Someone: “White Horses"
What is this and is it noise ROCK? It’s glitchy and industrial? Even if you could argue that this is noise, it ain’t noise rock. You’re loing points, sorry. Also this kinda sucks anyway? Like this part sounds like when your GameCube disc has a scratch on it, so you can’t play Windwaker. I like Windwaker. Stay away from my GameCube!
1.5/5 (-0.5 for not fitting theme) = 1/5 (ELIMINATED!) | 7 | | Laddio Bolocko Strange Warmings of Laddio Bolocko
JohnnyoftheWell: “Nurse”
Now THIS is fucking noise rock. I like the metal clanging percussion. Not much structure and reads a lot like a jam, but it’s a good jam. Oh this is getting chaotic, and hypnotic, and psychotic, and other tics! Where am I? I’m lost. Help me.
4.7/5 (ROUND WINNER! [+0.5 will be added to their next round score]) | 8 | | The Nation of Ulysses Plays Pretty for Baby
Kompys2000: “The Hickey Underworld”
Messy and garage rocky, I feel it. Can’t say I like these vocals. This could be noisier if I’m being honest. I’m kind of bored by this, but it’s not bad.
3/5 +(0.5 from winning last round) = 3.5 (ELIMINATED!) | 9 | | Pile You're Better Than This
Fogza: “Tin Foil Hat”
The dynamic changes are cool so far. This is from 2015? Good for them making shit that still sounds like it belong in a gutter (this is a complement by the way.) It sounds retro, y’know?
3.8/5 (SAFE) | 10 | | Scratch Acid Scratch Acid
ffs: “Cannibal”
There’s no shame in playing it safe! The Jesus Lizard Rule, so Scratch Acid was a smart choice. Yow’s vocals are a force, the riff is fun the vibe is great. It’s as good as anything from Head at least if not better!

12.10.23 | Someone's rec crashed hard and Komyps' winner boost from last round couldn't save them. Both are eliminated
Johnny knows his noise rock and won the round!
Round 8 is the final double elimination round, round 9 will be single elimination | Ryus
12.10.23 | ok its not noise rock but wtf white horses is incredible | Ryus
12.10.23 | tbf you do lose some of its magic by not listening to it in album context but still | GhandhiLion
12.10.23 | Hickey Underworld isn't noiserock btw. Also your score makes me SAD. That song is incredible | GhandhiLion
12.10.23 | Contradictions are cool [2] | ArsMoriendi
12.10.23 | @Ryus: I did not like it one bit
@Ghandhi: I thought so, but it at least felt close enough that I didn't bother subtracting points. Doesn't matter cuz Kompys is out anyway | JohnnyoftheWell
12.10.23 | lmfao thank fuck I scored a bonus before the baroque pop round | porcupinetheater
12.10.23 | Yeah reccin a song that’s so dependent on album context to elevate is a chaotic move, respect to someone | porcupinetheater
12.10.23 | Also it’s Holterin’ time for this week’s theme,

12.10.23 | woo go sam go sam | Kompys2000
12.11.23 | Don't care about elimination this is farther than I've ever gotten but what i DO care about is ghandhi pearlclutching over the boundaries of a genre as nebulous as noise rock 🙄 | Kompys2000
12.11.23 | Something something TRUE noise rock refers only to the touch and go roster of the early 90s | ArsMoriendi
12.11.23 | He's kinda known for that, but I sorta appreciate it in a way | GhandhiLion
12.11.23 | "TRUE noise rock refers only to the touch and go roster of the early 90s"

12.11.23 | Ars how much Scott Walker do you know? | ArsMoriendi
12.11.23 | I’ve heard Scott Walker songs, but none I can name by title
I’d say anything goes for him as long as it’s baroque pop | ffs
12.11.23 | ars nova - pavan for my lady
https://youtu.be/-eYJ8lJmP3s?si=fAzR7-ZP7aPUVWAo | ArsMoriendi
12.11.23 | Tbh I see both Laddio Bolocko and Daisy Chainsaw in my future… maybe sometime in 2024 | porcupinetheater
12.11.23 | If you dig the whole Daisy Chainsaw record, check Queen Adreena too, singer and guitarist both split off to form that band and they’re killer | CugnoBrasso
12.11.23 | I'm torn between two songs... I'll think about it. | CugnoBrasso
12.12.23 | Ok, one of those two songs was basically a standard indie rock song with the addition of a string quartet (Measure by Field Music), and the other one was closer to folk than chamber pop (Julep by Punch Brothers).
So I'm going with a third one, 'Hologram' by These New Puritans.
https://thesenewpuritans.bandcamp.com/track/hologram-1
Too experimental to be considered pop music? I don't know, it might be, but frick it. | ArsMoriendi
12.12.23 | No idea what will count til I hear it, but if you have any doubts: nothing is locked in until Sunday at 5pm! | porcupinetheater
12.12.23 | Ooh These New Puritans are killer | JohnnyoftheWell
12.12.23 | Sparks - Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4esybKKOYYo
contains a "Guitar Solo" but the substance of the main arrangement is so overwhelmingly baroque that it shall stand. yes! | ArsMoriendi
12.12.23 | For sure, genre hybrids exist and count
Baroque pop + some sorta rock I think is pretty common anyway
Wow I guess I don’t have to remind anyone this week. The final 7 marks all super serious players ☺️ | porcupinetheater
12.12.23 | Might just get spicy and change my rec to keep you on your toes | JohnnyoftheWell
12.12.23 | porc go pinch the Seventh Seal - don't think it has enough sparkle to weather an Ars comp but someone! must! rec! it! | porcupinetheater
