So that’s 2/2 now, better than Sorceress already.

The folkier sections sound quite good, but then when the heavier verses cut in, it sounds like 100% dad rock. Not impressed unfortunately.
|
| |
Sweet. This album is going to own.
|
| |
eng version was... ok
|
| |
eh I dunno
|
| |
So much positivity in the Sorceress thread too :/
|
| |
Modern opeth just sounds all the same to me
|
| |
It’s all played at a similar tempo I guess, still this shows more ambition than the past couple of albums.
|
| |
Keyboards have the annoying dad sonicz but I find both singles pretty solid. This is one of the densest Opeth songs I can think of, Mikael keeps growing as a musician and it's clear. The first single was less dense but also catchier and had that psych trip section that was definitely a novelty. Honestly this album, while giving strong Sorceress vibes in places, looks nothing like a more of the same to me.
tl;dr hyped

Same.
|
| |
alright lmao
its one of the best tracks theyve released this decade
|
| |
Agreed flug.
Definitely doesn’t feel like ‘more of the same’ to me.
|
| |
The folkier sections make me wanna listen to their older stuff.
|
| |
Getting some Heritage vibes from here. Curious how this one will blend in with the other tracks. And Fredrik’s playing is really classy, he definitely knows how to pull off some tasty licks and runs.

They gotta chill with the organ

You guys can't be pleased lol. This is definitely the best thing they've put out since watershed

"You guys can't be pleased lol. This is definitely the best thing they've put out since watershed"
Doesn't mean too much tho
|
| |
Def thinking this will be best since Watershed.
|
| |
this is easily the best opeth track I’ve listened to
this is easily the worst opeth track I’ve listened to
this is the first opeth track I’ve listened to

this is just a reminder how much Heritage fucking sucks.
|
| |
listened to the swede version too and tho I think the vocal melodies during the chorus are great, instrumentally and structurally this is still really not interesting at all.
|
| |
This track has a lot of that old ethereal flair that they've been missing from the last few albums
|
| |
this is just a reminder how much Heritage fucking rules [a million times]

fuck yeah kalk m/ m/ m/

kalk I love you so much < 333333
|

I mean, I really liked Heritage, so I'm okay with this. I don't need death growls as long as it still has that Opeth vibe - which the last two albums lacked.
|
| |
Agreed zaryuche
It's just not original and it really is more of the same honestly. There is nothing memorable or unique about the two songs so far. This is sounding like another 2.5 modern opeth album
|
| |
Second half of the song is stronger. Great song overall. I'm biased, i never actually hated ANYTHING opeth has ever made. Love all their phases. I'd let Mikael punch me in the face
|
| |
^Same here. Even the weakest Opeth, in my eyes, is never bad.
|
| |
Better than new Tool lol
even bad by Opeth standards is still pretty good. structure is bit off though.
|
| |
Ehh
|
| |
Jep, it's pretty good
|
| |
The vocal harmonies are so good.
Fredrik has really improved as a backing vocalist.
|
| |
i liked Dignity quite a lot, they have me really intrigued for the first time since Watershed (even though Heritage was pretty good). feels good, i miss looking forward to new Opeth albums.
|
| |
i like the other new song more. Anyone else here noticing the 'top gear theme song section", its from allman brothers but sounds like the end of the top gear theme lol.
|
| |
It's good, I'm just not nearly as intrigued with this style still. Not just because of the lack of harsh vocals, but the music itself is just too far into old school prog, with the guitar and synth harmonization and long jam style passages. The heavy stuff just made the dynamics more interesting to me.
|
| |
Yeah yeah it's fine, but just imagine how much better it would be if these songs were death metal. You can hear that's what they want to be.
But noooo, we must force them into the progwank box.
|
| |
Definitely digging the new tracks a little more than the last couple albums.
Mike said in a recent interview "To me, the Swedish version is the main version, the most important version to me, and the version I want people to listen to first." and apparently just made the English version since he was afraid his fans wouldn't listen to it in Swedish. So far I'm preferring the Swedish versions, and think it adds a new element to their sound which works well.
|
| |
Sounds good so far, although I hate those speech snippets with a passion. Pity they're incorporating more and more of them over the last couple of records.
|
| |
They add to the mystery for me, album feels like a wacky crime detective drama with these two tracks.
|
| |
They make me think of Within Temptation, which isn't good in this case.
But the track itself is fine!
|
| |
That's never a good thing
|
| |
still doing dad prog huh? havent checked either single. i liked ONE song on sorceress and unfortunately it was the title track. starting to get sick of this.
|
| |
Sorceress is like the band's worst song
I like this a fair amount, album is shaping up to be their best since Heritage despite Mikael still oversinging at times.
|
| |
I think this is the best he’s ever sounded vocally, cleans obviously.
He only over-sang in PC, really.
|
| |
He croons = he's oversinging.
|
| |
please no more growls
|
| |
Yeah that was awkward.
Oh boy I'm so set up to hate this album.
|
| |
I really think the organ overuse the past few albums is a big part of what gives it that dad rock vibe. If they would cut back on that a little it would help
|
| |
Crooning means singing in a low voice so I’m obviously not talking about that, just some of the times when Mikael belts it out and can sound strained when reaching for those high notes. I also noticed that he practically squeaks at the end of each vocal phrase on the verses of Heart in Hand. But he’s a great singer besides that and I don’t care if he doesn’t growl again.
|
| |
"But noooo, we must force them into the progwank box."
Who's forcing them into it? It sounds like that's what they want to be.
|
| |
Still stoked for the new album.
|
| |
Both songs are my faves since Heritage so I’m beyond hyped now, very giddy.
|
| |
Yesss! All is well after all then.
|
| |
>I’m obviously not talking about that, just some of the times when Mikael belts it out and can sound strained when reaching for those high notes. I also noticed that he practically squeaks at the end of each vocal phrase on the verses of Heart in Hand.
Completely agree. So what is the short way of saying this?
|
| |
Yeah after heart in hand came out someone pointing out the vocal squeaks and now I cant unhear it and it bothers me a little
|
| |
This track really has that 'put me to sleep' vibe from the last few albums
|
| |
SOPHIE produced that song
|
| |
"I also noticed that he practically squeaks at the end of each vocal phrase on the verses of Heart in Hand."
Mate Mikael started doing this around Ghost Reveries if you listen closely to a lot of the material since then
|
| |
Mikael is a close friend of SOPHIE's
|
| |
>Mate Mikael started doing this around Ghost Reveries if you listen closely to a lot of the material since then
Oh we noticed. But the music more than made up for it. Now it's really noticeable.
|
| |
Yeah it's definitely gone way overboard since then, sometimes just because you 'can' hit a note doesn't mean you should
|
| |
I thought I was listening to Between the Buried and Me when I hit play.
|
| |
Really, no one else noticed the top gear turnaround
|
| |
the first part is actually sung by anohni

this is easily the best opeth track I’ve listened to

Opeth have always been BTBAM copycats tbh
|
| |
What we see here is people trying to joke their disappointment away.
|
| |
No disappointment here.
|
| |
I'm in utter denial
|
| |
Bops
|
| |
"Opeth have always been BTBAM copycats tbh"
Lmao I hope this was a joke post
|
| |
It's true - BTBAM were an underground prog-death band waaaaay before they evolved into their current form, they just didn't release any material under that name.
|
| |
Yeah clearly not a joke.
|
| |
Hard to tell these days. I see some pretty dumb comments all over the internet especially involving music
|
| |
without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied
|
| |
My comment was serious and Demon of the Fall knows his stuff really well, obviously
|
| |
I've seen some pretty ridiculous comments and comparisons since opeth moved to old school prog territory 🤷♀️
|
| |
where are mah growlz!1!
The song is good though. I can see they are really trying to push the Swedish version as the original one, but I still prefer them in English.
|
| |
case in point why they made an English version (:
|
| |
If they wanted to make an album in Swedish then fine, but making 2 versions seems so counterintuitive and bizarre.
|
| |
it makes $ense if you think about it
|
| |
transcribing the words from Swedish to English with correct # of syllables and still somehow maintaining the integrity of the lyrics sounds like a masochistic OCD nightmare tbh.
|
| |
well good thing you're on the otherside of that enjoyment
|
| |
modern Opeth and enjoyment are not things that really go together but good point
|
| |
Ooh, feisty.
|
| |
Artiswar bby don’t be like that
|
| |
well, I 5'd Heritage but the rest of the recent stuff I only jam at bedtime.
|
| |
Heritage is a 5.0 agreed. One of the hardest 5.0s too.
Just bought a ticket for the fall tour, very curious to hear what language he'll use during live renditions of the new material.
|

song is dece
|

Song has its strong moments, I like the start. Sounds like post-watershed Opeth, no surprises.
