R.I.P. Ted Kirkpatrick 2022-08-20 by Brendan Schroer STAFF | 23 Comments | Ted Kirkpatrick -- best known as the drummer, songwriter, and bandleader of Christian progressive/thrash metal band Tourniquet -- has passed away at the age of 62. His cause of death was determined to be Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a rare untreatable lung disease.
Kirkpatrick was the primary figurehead of Tourniquet, leading the project both musically and financially. In addition to his work on acclaimed thrash records such as Stop the Bleeding, Psycho Surgery, and Microscopic View of a Telescopic Realm, he was also recognized in metal circles as a highly accomplished drummer. Accolades include being voted "Favorite Drummer" for 10 years in a row by readers of HM Magazine, as well as being featured twice in Modern Drummer Magazine. In addition, his songwriting is still held in high regard, with much of his writing style being influenced by his love of Baroque- and Classical-era composers.
According to his wife Christy in a post on the Tourniquet Facebook page, Kirkpatrick had the following to say prior to his passing:
“My life has been so full of adventure and wonderment and for the past 30 years all of you have been a great source of joy as you shared your love for our music, my passion for animals, and my desire to share the love of God with all of you. I’m forever grateful for the unending loyalty so many have shown through the years and support of whatever talents the Lord gave me on this earth. I leave behind so many wonderful friends, my wonderful family, the greatest family anyone could ask for, my brothers, Doug & Jim, my sister Sue, and my wife Cristy, my forever soul mate, my best friend and the most beautiful person I’ve ever known. Thank you and I’ll see you sometime on the other side. Love, Ted”

| | | Damn, I always held his drumming in very high regard. Honestly shocked to see that he was ill. RIP

| | | Fucking hell man, this just hit me like a brick thrown in the face. Tourniquet made some of the best, most wizardry tech thrash of the 90's regardless of the fact that they were a Christian band. And Ted's drumming and songwriting was fucking elite. He looked and performed really well for his age too, which makes this extra shocking.
| | | RIP and huge respect for tech thrashing at a time when the genre was completely out of fashion.
| | | ^ As well as Christian metal being out of fashion. Tourniquet definitely had a lot working against them from the get-go
| | | Huge RIP. This guy was a very nice human being and a great drummer
| | | ):
| | | RIP, the man was very talented and stood by what he believed until the end.
| | | Also RIP arguably the greatest Christian metal band, though there is a high likelihood Tourniquet will release one posthumous album of material Ted was anticipating to release later this year.
| | | Dont know him or the band, but RIP.
| | | One of the best to ever do it and a huge inspiration for me personally as a drummer. This sucks big time
| | | He was also a fantastic guitar player too and would record some parts if he felt the other players weren't hitting it right.
| | | Completely unfamiliar but the note he left is very sweet. RIP
| | | Damn, was listening to them the other night too. Rip
| | | Ugh...hard RIP. WE’ll miss you, Ted. Thanks for the amazing music. Go with God.
| | | huge RIP to Ted
incredible thrash drummer and songwriter
| | | RIP
| | | RIP
| | | rest in peace
| | | Gosh this hurts, Ted was an incredible drummer. Left behind a heck of a legacy and some great music. Gonna go jam Microscopic View of a Telescopic Realm now.
| | | Saw them live a bunch of times in the 90's. So incredibly underrated and talented - I hardly listen to anything christian these days, but I still listen to Tourniquet - hard RIP. This man was an absolute legend in my eyes.
