Review Summary: Some of the most relaxing shoegaze out there.
The Daysleepers may not release music often but when they do, it is always filled with stellar material. Their debut EP,
Hide Your Eyes, is no exception to this. In fact, this is still their strongest release to date. They perfected the blend of dream pop and shoegaze here with their dreamy and infectious dynamic male and female vocal lines alongside the noisy, yet calmingly atmospheric instrumentation. The opener,
Threnody, demonstrates this sound flawlessly and makes for an outstanding first impression. The vocal harmony is gorgeous and the sudden burst of noise is blissful.
Mesmerize has a rather fitting name, as this short but sweet track is absolutely mesmerizing in it’s magical, reverb filled final minute. Their sound peaks with
Loved By the Sun with it’s angelic vocal melodies that consumes the entire song, particularly in it’s heavenly chorus.
Big Sleeps is another highlight on this EP featuring everything this bands excels at and a whimsical guitar line at the end of the song closing this EP perfectly. If I were to name a weak point in
Hide Your Eyes, it would be the song
Stars On Fire. While it does contain all the trademarks of a great shoegaze track, it does falter in it’s rather bloated nine and a half minute length. Despite this small bump in the road,
Hide Your Eyes is essential shoegaze listening where even it’s weakest moments could still be considered strong.
