Review Summary: I don't know what the hell this is....but I like it.
You know boys, sometimes I listen to music and think to myself "what in the *** kind of drugs are these people on?" I was thinking that very thought the entire duration of
Koniec Wakacji from Polish experimental metal band Gruzja.
This album is, for lack of a better word, extremely weird. Gruzja has a core sound that is rooted in black metal but I'd hesitate to call them a black metal band at all. Sure they have some tremz and blasts here and there but the sound on this album is more on the punk rock mixed with industrial and post-punk side of the spectrum. I mean, there is a whole lot of *** going on here and I'm not sure Gruzja had a particular direction in mind, but somehow it all works.
Koniec Wakacji might sound disjointed, and it kind of is, but the chaos of the meshing of genres actually makes for a super fun listen. These boys go full on Rammstein at points of this album then turn around and hit you with furious black metal then turn around again with catchy punk riffs. You get it from all angles. Hell, you even get some ambient with hypnotic crooning vocals on the 8th track Salynka.
Experimental music can be a wonderful thing when done right. Some bands try it and end up either overdoing it or just completely ***ing it up. Gruzja, ladies and gents, know how to make entertaining experimental metal and
Koniec Wakacji proves that with flying colors.
