A great early burzum with alot of good riffs and atmosphere. Overall this feels pretty innovative and also varied enough to not get grating as can happen with some black metal, I especially like the slower song called En Ring Til Aa Herske and the general synth work on this record. Some of the riffs feel a bit replacable tho

Slight improvement over his debut, but Varg still hasn?t hit his peak, which he does over the next two albums. Snu Mikrokosmos Tegn is a clear highlight, and Ham som Reiste is the opposite.

Varg's transition to a more ambient sound, although slightly present on the debut album, can actually be traced in a more conclusive form on this album. Most of the music here is slow-paced, many of them not being rooted in metal at all. However, Varg was not there yet in his attempts to blend ambient with black metal. He did not find that middle ground yet. As a result, the strong material present on this album are the more straightforward BM tracks, such as tracks 2, 3, 4 and 6. The rest are forgettable or even outright crap that he would explore in his prison albums. Still, this album is worth going through, even just for actually understanding how did Varg progress to his truly stellar gems that are his next 2 albums.

Some of the best Burzum moments are here. This one is probably the most 'traditional' album from Varg. The production is atmospheric: guitars sound more warm, the bass is loud and well played (as always). And the music is just great. I mean, Key To The Gate, Lost Wisdom and Snu Mikrokosmos' Tegn in one album...

Could've been great, but Varg's vocals are fucking atrocious. He sounds like a suffocating chihuahua being scolded with steaming-hot water. I still recommend the album for some great guitar work and some seriously catchy riffs.
