"Black metal-influenced stuff is hit or miss for me but this really, really hits. Feels like every few years I really dig one random BM album (like Mare Cognitum a while back) and this is the one for 2023"
Pretty much me, I'll have to give that MC a peep

"I was initally taken by this because a lot it is quite pretty but not sure how convinced i am on the songwriting on repeated listens
None of the sections have really stuck to me (on my 5th listen or so) or have had any lasting impact"
Yeah I like this, but the riffs took too much of a backseat for me. Autumn eternal is still his best

Yeah, I mean the folky parts / more considered atmo segments are just not all that captivating, not enough to hold this together. Yet the intro is probably the most convincing passage, then that godawful transition hits. The black metal parts seem fairly competent but typical and might tickle your fancy if you were more of a sucker for that style idk. A couple of passable riffs here

Think this is settling on the weaker side of Pano’s discog for me
Still a sucker for the atmosphere, prob gonna always dig his sound as a baseline, but it definitely feels like there’s not as much underpinning it as on his better records

What’s his best record? Go. Convince me.

Autumn Eternal makes the smoothest listen
Scars of Man first disc has maybe my favorite (and some of the most riff-forward) black metal he’s put out, and the second folk disc has its misses but also some superb cuts
Single best song is Rune’s Heart from his split with Nechochwen (or however you spell it)
Self titled doesn’t sound like anything after, just very well done Weakling worship
Personal fave on the whole is Collapse and I couldn’t quite tell you why, just scratches an itch

Yeah I’m not listening to the S/T next, looks kvlt, so that checks out(?)
Hmm, thanks for the tips, it seems I have much to ponder

Collapse and autumn eternal are my faves. Autumn eternal is the peak of his sound for me. Just all elements of his sound at their best and put together in the most cohesive way. Collapse is a little janky production wise and some of the bluegrass parts sound a little off but that's part of the charm of that one for me. Collapse is just an intense fucking record and it's his most insane vocal performance

@Porc
Rune's Heart is very much the best thing Lunn has ever had his hands on
The context behind it is also grossly tragic tbh

the solo at the end of Cedar Skeletons is my favorite music moment of the year

I wish I liked this as much as everyone else but so far after a few listens it's fine but kind of drags

I think the main drawback is that the riffs kind of sound like soup

The production can be a bit underwhelming at points but for some reason it doesn't bother me here the way other albums in the genre do. I think it speaks to the near-genius levels of songwriting displayed throughout this album. Still contemplating this as my AOTY (I give myself until my birthday in Feb to complete my lists every year so I can absorb what comes out in Nov and Dec)
