Good review sundered. I like your hook in the intro, and you did a good job of describing the album as a whole without having to resort to a wretched track-by-track review.

The record and the songs are good. But somehow, the songs and the band itself do not grow that much on me. Stuff like Killswitch Engage suits me better. ;)

Nevertheless, this record gets a rock solid 3/5 from me.

P.S.: Excellent written reviews. Nice work. :thumb:

Just thought I'd mention what an amazing album this is. PTW are the most kickass innovative hardcore act out there. The manage to put melody into a genre where that seems quite hard. This CD was there best yet though some hxc fans prob like Opposite better. I think they kinda relate to thrice as in thrice had an really hard album, the illusion of safety, then moved to a more major label and created an album where they focused more on melody with The Artist, PTW kinda did the same thing. I recently bought opposite and I don't really like it. Its pretty obvious that at that time they were just trying to attract some hxc fans with every song featuring chugging riffs and screaming the whole time (I only really enjoyed the last track and the one where Jeff screams "I could, never swallow your false ideals). But now with there growing fan base, they tried something a bit different with the new album and it was definitely in the right direction. Great review and I can't wait until the next release from PTW.

Emocore is a misnomer and I don't really like Poison the Well that much. They end being boring to me.

man this is an old review.

i agree completely with the thread starter, I've always noticed and loved the atmospheric haunting radiohead-esque melodies on this album, but have never had the right words to explain it, and when i try people are just like "dude, what are you talking about?"

They are soo great live too, Geoff's bass playing is alot more evient live.

This is one of the best albums I own. I like the misplaced "jam sessions" (kinda) before and after some of the songs. Every song on this CD is good and its good to see PTW do something innovative with hardcore by adding melody, amazing guitar parts and such. I think this is far superior to Opposite of December.

I was listening to it a few weeks ago for the first time in a while, and I have to agree CB, it's up to par with and perhaps even better than Opposite of December

Yeah, it's tough. The Opposite of December is a brutal mix of metalcore with some excellent tracks but I tend to steer towards melody and I had to say YCBY. Very close call though. YCBY got 4.5 out of 5 from AMG, by the way.

Oh yeah, and it's pretty awesome to have someone who once schooled my ass in genre classification agree with me. :thumb:

I downloaded a few of their songs a while ago, but didn't like them much then. I'm listening to all those songs now and I have to say, I am hooked! 'My Mirror No Longer Reflects' is one of my favorite songs at the moment! Would this album be the best to introduce me to Poison The Well?

Not really. Each album hasn't a different feel, it depends what kinda person you are. I bought this album as my first PTW album, and it became one of my favorite albums of all time. Though I strongly beieve that YCBY is their best album, the majority of people call The Opposite Of December the best (which has "My Mirror No Longer Reflects," my favorite off the album). YCBY and TOOD are almost opposite ends of the spectrum, so depending on what your tastes are, one of the albums will jump out at you.

The Opposite Of December Suggested Tracks:

12/23/93

Nerdy

Slice Paper Wrists

Artists Rendering Of Me

Not Within Arms Length

Tear From The Red Suggested Tracks:

Pieces of Me In You

Botchla

Horns And Tails

Lazarro

You Come Befoe You Suggested Tracks:

The Realist

Ghostchant

Loved Ones

Apathy Is A Cold Body

Zombies Are Good For Your Health

Meeting Again For The First Time

Check out my PTW FA in the pop-punk forum for more suggestions.

Thanks Chris. I think I will get YCBY first, as I always enjoy the melodic side of hardcore bands. This review makes me want to own this album right now! Great job!

Man... this band is amazing.... I don't know what the all the fuss is about how bad TFTR is for some people but i think its a good album. THe order Of best cd to worst in my opinion goes as follows:

Opposite Of December

You Come Before You

Tear From The Red (people say some of this albums songs rip off deftones. do they?)

Distance Makes The Heart Grow Fonder (LAst place because of the length)

Haahah people ask me at school "wat are u listening to" and i say "Poison The Well" and they usually say something like "never heard of em" hahah.... ne ways...... Good Review And a pretty good cd.

This and TOOD are equal for me. They are both amazing albums each with their strengths and weaknesses. The biggest let down of this album for me is the songs are fantastic but many of them don't have the sticking appeal of say 'Slice Paper Wrists'. However the vocals, guitars, drums and in parts the bass all do a brilliant job and make for a great album. The melody is a welcome change from past PTW efforts.

4.5/5

"Apathy is a Cold Body" is such an incredible song ! That outro is one of the best I've ever heard.
