Well, I guess Hawks liked it since he 4.5'd it already. Heh. Well-executed post-black like this never gets old, though.

Still gotta get on this.

After first listen, this album is a big meh. I was tempted to give it a 2.5 but it feels like this is going to be a grower.

Nah, the reason it's actually so amazing is because it isn't "real metal". If it was it would be half as atmospheric, half as heavy and less than half as interesting.
You couldn't be more wrong. This is like the utmost generic take on post-metal, black metal, dark metal, whatever you want to call it (done well to a certain degree of course). Real metal is something you can feel and this only latches onto ideas that have been driven too far for it's own good and thus, not making for the most exciting thing in the world. I've listened to so much metal over my life and I'm sorry to say, Altar of Plagues are 21st century metal like a 10000 other bands.

You really should. The first few songs aren't even that great; it gets really good closer to the middle/end.

Totally disagree man. I don't rate any of AoP's other stuff precisely for the reasons you outline,
but this one I think really transcends most of the mulch that makes up 'post-black metal'. Obviously
it isn't desperately original, but no metal band around today is so that is completely beside the
point.
Before you say "you haven't let it sink in yet", I've had the record for nearly two months now so,
yes, I have! Can understand it's not going to be everyone's favourite thing but I really do love it.
Also my usage of the term "real metal" was intended to be slightly sarcastic, for the record.

I'm interested. I enjoyed mammal.
I do that stretch on the cover every morning. My goal is to take it down the stairs.
