No doubt Pure Comedy was a more inspired work than this, but this may end up being the more enjoyable for me overall. Still not sure how I feel about it though, only spun twice.

I definitely prefer this to Pure Comedy

I've left this album running on Spotify into Pure Comedy and honestly it just sounds so much LIVELIER - I never thought I'd say that, but it's true. PC actually sounds lively compared to another album, unbelievable.

Pure Comedy is infinitely more inspired and colorful. It's not perfect, but it's definitely more interesting than this. Though there are some really excellent songs on here, nothing really surprised me or made a lasting impression.

These songs are a bit too straightforward and unexciting (aside from "Just Dumb Enough to Try" -- ouch) for my tastes but I'd be lying to myself if I didn't 4 it.

Jk I'll lie to myself, the songs themselves deserve a 4 but put together like this they're just too samey
And BOOM brought it down to a 3.5

I don’t know guys, I’m starting to think this is pretty great, though Date Night may be his worst song as Father John Misty.

this is more interesting to listen to than Pure Comedy, at least instrumentally. It's still very dad-rock-y but at least feels like it goes somewhere and not like an afterthought.

'Pure Comedy', 'Things It Would Have Been Helpful To Know Before The Revolution', 'Ballad Of The Dying Man', 'So I'm Growing Old On Magic Mountain' and 'In Twenty Years Or So' are better than everything here pretty much though :/
Tillman should know where he's taking us on this album...cos he's been there before, I'm callin' it: RETREAD

If I hated his last album, is there any chance I enjoy this?

I guess it might be a more palatable way of taking in a very similar sounding album but unless you really really liked 'Honeybear' and were holding out for getting back into FJM again...I wouldn't bother

'So I'm Growing Old On Magic Mountain' is enough to make Pure Comedy far superior
